Shopping Guide to the Products and Crafts for the Christmas Season

There are many ways to celebrate Christmas, and in the Community of Madrid, residents and visitors can enjoy the many Christmas Festivities that seem to invade all corners and towns of our region.

Christmas Day is a special day for children, when they get the gifts they have been wishing for all year. It is of course also special for adults, that go about their Christmas shopping thinking of the gifts that will most please their loved ones.

With this Christmas spirit  in mind shoppers can buy holiday ornaments and get their holiday shopping and gifts  in advance in several venues. The traditional Christmas Fairs and Markets– that offer a great variety of products -, shopping areas and malls that are spectacularly decorated and illuminated, and of course in the neighborhood shops and the, so-metimes century old,  traditional shops that offer typical products, most of them handcrafted, in a family atmosphere.

To talk about Christmas is to talk about its timeless symbols:  Crèches, the Three Wise Men (our famous “Reyes Magos”), Santa, snowmen, candy sticks, season greeting cards, gifts, billboards and the commercial campaigns associated to this holiday season.

All these elements are present in the shops, fairs and street markets that dot the geography of our region, all dressed up in their finery for this special time of the year.

At the beginning of the XX century the intimate Christmas atmosphere of the homes was recreated in the street as large cities decorated their streets dressing up their urban furniture. Colored lights, Christmas trees, crèches, Stars of Bethle-hem became part of the urban Christmas landscape. A large part of this lighting display is found decorating the windows of the large shopping centers and malls, as well as those of retail and neighborhood shops, transmitting the Christmas spirit to residents and visitors in Madrid.

Christmas is also a time to decorate the table with typical sweets and enjoy them with the family. Every country has their traditional Christmas dishes, but in Spain they tend to be “peladillas” (candied almonds), “polvorones” (crumbly almond based pastries somewhat similar to shortbread coated in confectionary sugar), “turrones” (hard or soft almond based nougat bars), nuts, quince meat, raisins, dates, cookies, marzipan, etc. Madrid offers many high quality variations of these specialty confections that are made recreating the most authentic artisanal techniques.

Based on this abundance the Department of Economy and Internal Revenue of the Community of Madrid has decided to publish online this Guide to Christmas Shopping and Crafts that will be posted on their institutional website, to promote the commercial and artisanal activity in a season of the year that is very relevant to retailers and artisans in our region.

The guide is divided in five sections that walk the reader through a thematic itinerary of the offer described above in terms of the close relationship between the Christmas Spirit and the commercial and artisanal activity of the season, such as selling typical products and ornaments associated to Christmas, illuminating and decorating all shopping establish-ments with Christmas lights and motifs, the interior and open air markets and fairs that specialize in Christmas-related products. And of course, large crafts fairs such as the “Handcrafts Market Fair of the Community of Madrid” where we will find all kind of handmade goods made by the artisans of our region.I encourage the reader to discover through this guide the large malls, corner shops, fairs and open air markets, local retai-lers and century old shops, all decorated in traditional or avant-garde styles using the most typical elements of Christmas. Together they offer a large variety of goods that will delight clients and passersby. I also invite you from here to taste their products and do your Christmas shopping at these establishments.

In short, I encourage you to partake of the Christmas spirit through the commerce and handcrafts of our region, and I take this opportunity to wish you a very merry Christmas.
