Matt Wilcox's dream was fulfilled when he got the call to head Baldwinsville's lacrosse program.

A lifetime Baldwinsville resident's dream came true last June.

Baldwinsville didn't have to look far in its search to replace 35-year boys lacrosse head coach Pete Fiorini. So when Athletic Director Chris Campolieta named Matt Wilcox as Fiorini's successor, it made a dream reality for a young coach and a smooth transition for the Bees' lacrosse program.

"It was the best feeling of my life," said Wilcox after receiving a phone call from Campolieta with the job offer.

"He was ecstatic," Campolieta said. "He bleeds red and white, so this has been a lifelong dream of his."

Wilcox's ties with Baldwinsville lacrosse run deep. A 2004 Baldwinsville graduate, Wilcox played under Fiorini for three years before playing college lacrosse at Herkimer Community College and Cortland State. His father, Tom Wilcox, played for and coached with Fiorini before passing away in a car accident when Wilcox was 3 years old. His step father, Kevin Sheehan, a former Syracuse University lacrosse star, also played for Fiorini at Baldwinsville.

Campolieta said despite being young, Wilcox is one of the more organized coaches he’s ever seen. He learned from Fiorini how to manage and motivate a team. And while soaking in the lessons from his 30-year head coach and mentor, he taught Fiorini a thing or two himself.

“He’s like a son to me,” said Fiorini. “He’s learned from me and I’ve learned from him. It was reciprocal.”

Their relationship won’t be ending anytime soon. Wilcox hired Fiorini to coach Baldwinsville’s modified team, a job he didn’t hesitate to take. Fiorini’s primary reason for retiring was to avoid coaching his son, Pete, a freshman for the Bees this season. Now, coaching modified, Fiorini brings his experience to the ground floor of Baldwinsville lacrosse.

“I’m glad to help him out at that level because I think he has a great plan in place,” Fiorini said.

Wilcox will be tested in his first season as head coach. The Bees reached the sectional semifinals in 2014 before losing to West Genesee, but their goalie and top three scorers graduated.

Though they don’t have many seniors returning, Wilcox said, they have some at key spots. Ryan Kohutanich looks to anchor the defense and Jacob Anderson will lead the midfield.

"I have some really good young players that are working hard for my first year. I'm lucky," Wilcox said. "It’s a very tough league this year and we're excited for the challenge."

"I always wanted to be a Baldwinsville head coach since I was a kid," said Wilcox, who has dreamed of following in his father's footsteps.

Wilcox is currently a physical education teacher at Palmer Elementary and has been an assistant under Fiorini since 2008, working mostly with the Bees' defense.
