ABAP/4 Query allows the user to query SAP data tables to produce a simple report. The user selects the table then chooses the fields from the table to be included in the report and then specifies the sequence.
The ABAP/4 programming language is the programming language used by SAP. Users may create an ABAP/4 program to extract data from SAP tables and print out a report. All reports and transactions in the system are programmed using the ABAP/4 programming language. Bolt-on, interfaces, and reports can be created using ABAP/4.
The Report Writer provides the user with a less technical, graphical tool to create reports. Users select the table to create the report on and then define the report layout. Multiple columns and calculations can be placed in the report.
Report Painter is similar to and uses some of the same functionality as Report Writer. Data sets are pre-defined using Report Writer and used to define the rows in a report in Report Painter.
SAP provides standard reports for each module in the system. They are can be used to to look at transactional and master data within the module in a summary format. Standard SAP reports.

Topic 3: Defining SAP BW
Packaged as an end-to-end solution
Integrated extraction capabilities from R/3 which allows for fewer ABAP programs and reports
A shared data model with R/3 including hierarchies and master data
A meta data repository linked to R/3
Built on same kernel as R/3, so technical support is very similar
Same security administration functions as R/3
“Close the loop” back to R/3 (APO, SEM)
Compatible with future upgrades of R/3
Positioned in the center of SAP’s Business Framework Architecture

Analysis
Topic 3: InfoCubes
Key Figures are continuously valued numeric fields that are objects of analysis. Other terms for key figure are measure, value, fact, and metric. Examples include: sales, quantity, costs, and revenue.
Dimensions are discrete valued fields that provide context for the key figures. Dimensions have many “characteristics” associated with them. Examples include: product, customer, month, and plant.

An InfoCube can be:
A BasicCube, presenting a set of relational tables in a star schema,
A RemoteCube, with transaction data that is not managed in the Business Information Warehouse, but externally, or
A MultiCube, presenting a view of data from several BasicCubes or RemoteCubes.

Topic 11: Case Study #1 – Background
Short of creating a custom extract and a user interface a Reporting Analyst was asked by a group of Financial Managers to generate an accessible Profit Center report that compared Actual vs. Plan Balances by each Balance Sheet Account.
Since the Financial Managers rarely access R/3, the Reporting Analyst determined that the BW may be the ideal source for this report.
*
Topic 11: Case Study #2 - Background
Because Material Costs seem to vary widely by Region, Business Analysts would like to investigate whether this is the result of year to year cost increases in Material withdrawals. By creating a report that displays the change from 1998 vs. 1999 by Plant, Component, Material, Order and Calendar Month, the Analysts expect to get an idea of how to address this issue.
*
Topic 11: Background
Because Gross Margins seem to have decreased over the past year, a Sales Manager would like to investigate whether this is the result of decreasing Sales, or increasing COGS. By creating a report that displays the change from Last Year to the Current Year by Product, Ship-to Customer and Geographic level, the User expects to get an idea of how to address this issue.
