Message from the Chairman

Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has about 15 lakh customers.

The Board is responsible for the management of water supply and sewage in

Bangalore and comes in to contact with hundreds of customers every day.

It's only natural that public expects the services of the Board in matters such

as new water connection, difference in water supply, water leakage, sewage

problems etc.

This Customer Guide provides information on the various services offered by

the Board to customers in a simple and easy way. This Guide contains

information on new connection, days on which Water Adalats are held and

their scope, telephone numbers of engineers, prorata details, water and

sewage fees, details of rainwater harvesting etc. I hope this Guide Book will

be useful to our valuable customers.

Water Services

lSupply of potable water at a suitable pressure

to meet individual requirements for most

commercial and domestic uses on alternate

days. Water would meet the standards

stipulated by the Central Public Health

Sewerage services

lAdequate services involving sewerage systems,

Prorata / Inspection Charges

Levy of prorata charges for sanction of water supply and sanitary connections.

Due to a spurt in the population, many of the old

buildings in Bangalore City have been dismantled and

are reconstructed as multistoried complexes. These

residential apartments and commercial complexes have

led to increase in demand for water and increase in

quantity of flow of sewage. The existing water supply

and Sanitary lines are very old with smaller diameter

and are not capable of meeting the increased demand for

water and are also incapable of taking the additional

sewage load.

Hence it is imperative to levy prorata charges to new

structures and multi-storied complexes to meet the

cost of improvement to the existing water supply and

sanitary system, at any required place in Bangalore city.

Prorata charge is a one-time payment collected from the

owner/Lessee/occupier, based on the area of

construction, both for water supply connection and

sanitary connection, as detailed below

lThe Board will set right the problem within the specified

time frame

lIn case of faulty water meter.

- If considered faulty deviation is more than 5% from

actual qty of water, testing fee refunded &

proportionate rebate allowed.

- If meter is not working BWSSB will calculate the

average of previous or subsequent 6 months

readings for billing in that period.

lWater Adalats started operating to settle billing and any

other disputes connected to water, sanitary problems,

non-receipt of bill, irregular meter reading etc.

- Adalats are convened at the sub-divisional level and

chaired by the concerned executive Engineer.

- They meet once every month on a pre-designated

day to settle disputes.

What do you do if BWSSB does not revert as

promised? What must you do ?

lBWSSB has set out a clear escalation process to be

followed if the concerned office does not react within the

specified time frame.

lMeet the concerned Asst. Exec. Engineer / Exec. Engineer

during the time he/she is available (3 to 4.30 pm every

working day) to meet the public

EMPOWERMENT LEVELS TO SOLVE DISPUTES

If consumers object to any decision communicated with regard

to billing or any related issues/problems, they may have the

decision reviewed of higher levels like AEE, EE. In some cases

these can be referred to the Water Adalats or the Appeals

Committee also.

How We Can Work Together

Some Do's

lPay water bills promptly

lProvide immediate information regarding

water leakage, over flow of sewage to the

nearest service station.

lLay water supply lines always away from

sanitary lines (one either side of the house).

lClean the sumps and overhead tanks

regularly, preferably at least once in 3

months.

lUse BIS marked pipe fittings.

lReplace damaged ball valves of sumps and

overhead tanks to avoid overflow and

wastage.

lProvide dual piping systems (blue color pipe)

for potable purpose and the green colour pipe

for non potable purpose.

lused automatic water level controller for

sumps and over head tanks.

How can you help?

Some Don'ts

lDo not forget to pay your bills regularly.

lDo not fix pumps directly to the line.

lDo not branch off pipe before the meter point

lDo not tamper with the meter.

lDo not throw waste in toilets to avoid

blockage of sanitary lines.

lDo not dump garbage near/in manholes.

lDo not provide sanitary points in basements

or cellar floor.

lDo not let sewage into storm water drains.

This will attracts penal action.

lDo not link rain water pipes into BWSSB sanitary

lines.

lDo not use potable water for washing vehicles,

cattle and gardening.

Always use MDPE Pipe

When getting water connection from the

main water pipe passing though the road, a

bore should be drilled and the pipe should

be attached without damaging the main

pipe. Since the pipe connecting the house

passes through the road, you should always

use MDPE pipe to prevent the leakage. This

pipe should be connected by shoving it

through a G.I pipe. This will help in the

prevention of leakages and in identification.

This method has been made mandatory by

BWSSB.

Did you know This ?

lRegular fresh water is supplied to Bangalore by

pumping from a distance of 100 kms -one of the

few cities in the world to do so.

lIncurs so much as Rs.19 per cubic meter on

treatment, conveyance and distribution of

water-highest in the country.

lAfter treatment, water is pumped from over a

head of 500 meters in three stages via T.K Hally,

Harahally and Tataguni, before reaching

Bangalore city.

lBWSSB started supplying filtered, potable

water to Bangalore city from August 1896.

l80% of the water supplied to the city is from

River Cauvery, located a distance of about

100kms and 500m lower than Bangalore

lApproximately 60MW of power is used for lifting

910 MLD of water from Cauvery and T.G.Hally.

lNearly 70% of the Board's revenue is spent on

power.

lSupply through 5.40 lakhs metered connection

l4 staffs per 1000 connections which is lowest in

the country

water bill.

being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.
