The Beatles - Michelle - Rubber Soul

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul

The basic backing track of this classic song was completed in one take on November 3, 1965. Various overdubs and double-tracking were added to complete the song the same day. Lennon is credited with coming up with the “I love you” middle eight section. The tune had been written by Paul several years earlier but he didn’t have proper lyrics until

1965. On U.S. album:

Written primarily by John, the song was completed in two takes on November 11, 1965. The song is notable for the naughty backing vocal (Paul and George repeating the word

“tit”) and John’s heavy breathing during his vocal. John called this one of his best. On U.S. album:

Rubber Soul - Capitol LP

The Beatles - Lady Madonna - Non-LP Track (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ seventeenth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label.

The last original issue Beatles 45 to appear on the Capitol swirl label in the U.S. or on the Parlophone label in the UK. Starting in the summer of 1968, Beatles recordings

would be issued on their own record label, Apple Records. The Beatles did not leave EMI or Capitol, they simply had their own custom label, to which they could sign artists. The manufacturing and distribution would remain the same as before. In fact, in America,

their releases continued to use Capitol album and single catalog numbering.

George Harrison – Dark Sweet Lady - George Harrison ‘79 A tropical feel dominates this tribute to his lovely soon-to-be-wife, Olivia. The

lyrics were dated February 28th, 1978 – which means this tune was also written in Hawaii.

Wings – Little Woman Love

It was composed by Paul in 1970 and recorded during the Ram Sessions but left of the album, then released as a single, although, in keeping with McCartney's practice at the time, the composition was officially credited to Paul and Linda

McCartney. While "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was dismissed by the critics, it climbed to the Top 10 in the United Kingdom In the United States, however,

radio stations preferred to play "Little Woman Love" more frequently. As a result, the picture sleeve for "Mary Had a Little Lamb" was revised by Apple Records to

have a separate listing for the flip side, as shown. However, the single only reached number 28 in the US.

The Beatles - She Said She Said - Revolver

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John

The rhythm track was finished in three takes on June 21, 1966, the final day of recording for “Revolver.” When the recording session started the song was untitled. The

key line came from a real-life incident. On August 24, 1965, during a break in Los Angeles from their North American Tour, The Beatles rented a house on Mulholland Drive. They played host to notables such as Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of the

Byrds, actors and actresses, and a bevy of beautiful women, “From Playboy, I believe,” Lennon remembered. John, high on acid, found himself in a strange conversation with actor Peter Fonda, who kept coming up to him and whispering, “I know what it’s like to

be dead.” As a child, Fonda had a near-death experience after accidentally shooting himself on the stomach. The song was a last-minute addition to the “Revolver,”

rehearsed and recorded on the final day of sessions when the band discovered they were one song short. McCartney recalls getting into an argument with John and leaving

the studio. He believes this is one of the only Beatle records he didn’t play on. It is assumed George played the bass in McCartney’s absence. John sings the lead vocal and

plays the organ, and John and George double-tracked the backing vocals. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - She Loves You - A Collection Of Oldies `66 (Lennon-McCartney)

Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles’ fourth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label.

With a July 1, 1963 recording date looming The Beatles knew their latest composition would be their next a-side: a song then entitled “Get You In the End,” shortened to “I’ll Get You” by the time it was released. But things changed on June 26, 1963. In a hotel room a few hours prior to a show in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John and Paul sat facing

each other on twin beds and proceeded to write from Paul’s suggestion. The song they created was “She Loves You.” The next day, with The Beatles having a rare day off from

touring, John met up with Paul in the dining room of the McCartney’s Forthlin Road home to finish up the song.

I Call Your Name - Long Tall Sally EP

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John

Composed by John Lennon and originally given to Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas to use as the b-side of another Lennon song (credited to Lennon-McCartney), “Bad to Me.” Both songs had been recorded at Abbey Road by Kramer and band on June 27, 1963,

with Paul McCartney in attendance. The Beatles’ version was recorded in seven takes on March 1, 1964. On U.S. album:

The Beatles - I Wanna Be Your Man – With The Beatles

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Ringo

When Ringo Starr rejected “Little Child,” the song John and Paul had written for him to sing on the band’s second album, they created a similar song, but one that would be

easier for Ringo to sing and more in his vocal range. “I Wanna Be Your Man” would be Ringo’s vocal contribution to the “With The Beatles” LP, and was often performed at Beatles concerts. The day before the song was to be recorded John and Paul were

walking along Charing Cross Road in London when passing in a taxi were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Paul McCartney: “They shouted from the taxi and we yelled, ‘Hey,

hey, give us a lift, give us a lift,’ and we bummed a lift off them. So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, ‘Hey we’re recording. Got any songs?’ And we said, ‘Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo’s song? You could do it as a single.’” John and Paul were invited to the Rolling Stones’ rehearsal to audition their

new, but still unfinished song. There Lennon told them, “If you guys really like the main part of the song, we’ll finish it for you right now,” and within minutes, they returned

with the song finished on the spot. The Rolling Stones recorded the song and it became their first big British hit, peaking at number 12. The Beatles recorded their version of “I Wanna Be Your Man” the next day, September 11, 1963. The Hammond organ heard

faintly in the mix is played by George Martin. On U.S. album:

Lead vocal: John In early February 1968, the Beatles were on a tight schedule. They had two weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which would be released while

they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend

a day with a film crew making a short promotional film for the song. The Paul McCartney-penned “Lady Madonna” was chosen as the A-side and would be the subject

of the promo film. On the last weekend of recording, the Beatles were informed they were one song short of the four new songs needed for “Yellow Submarine,” and a new

song had to be recorded before they left for India. The song shortage was due to “Baby, You’re A Rich Man,” which had been earmarked for the film soundtrack, being used as

the B-side of the “All You Need Is Love” single.

Wings –The Mess – Studio version 1972

The original working title of “The Mess” was “The Mess I’m In” and it was to appear as the last song on side 4 of the double Red Rose Speedway album

The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day’s Night

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul

John Lennon’s stunning ballad “If I Fell” was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from “This Boy” with its similar

chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded – at their request – together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of “And I Love Her” in

the U.S. On U.S. album:

idea to record there when engineer Ken Scott jokingly complained to John about all the unconventional things the group was doing in the studio. Scott remarked, “Bloody hell, the way you lot are carrying on you’ll be wanting to record everything in the room next

door!” John thought it was a great idea and had the studio crew set up the band’s amplifiers, microphones and instruments in the control room’s tiny annex. Fourteen takes of the basic track were completed on August 13, 1968. On August 14, John

recorded his lead vocal, Paul added his backing vocal line “girl you know the reason why,” and Ringo double-tracked his snare drum during the guitar solo. The vocal

bleeding through in the final mix is John’s guide vocal that was recorded on August 13, which he decided to leave as is. Ringo’s count-in (“two, three…”) was an edit piece

recorded on August 20.
