What Happened & Who was involved

The Great Depression was longest-lasting economic decline in history. In the United States, the Great Depression began after the stock market crash on October 1929, which sent Wall Street into panic and wiped out millions of investors. Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped, causing major declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers.

By 1933, when the Great Depression reached its lowest point, 13 to 15 million Americans were unemployed and almost half of the banks had failed. Herbert Hoover was President when the Great Depression began until Franklin D. Roosevelt became President in 1933 and helped lessen the worst effects of the Great Depression. The economy did not fully turn around until after 1939, when World War II kicked American industry grew rapidly.
