Rhetorical Devices1. Appeal to Reason

a) “Our N. England people are Aukward and bashfull; yet they are pert, ostentatious and vain, a mixture which excites ridicule and gives disgust. They have not the faculty which some people possess in the highest degree" (Addams 691).

b) “Our deficiencies in these respects, are owing wholly to the little intercourse we have had with strangers, and to our inexperience in the world” (Addams 690).

2.Appeal to Emotion

a) “In hopes of hearing Mr. Stillman, but was disappointed. He was there, but another Gentleman preached. His action was violent to a degree bordering on fury. His gestures, unnatural and distorted. Not the least idea of grace in his motions” (Addams 690).

b) “May God almighty grant it may be prosperous for America. Hope is an anchor and a cordial. Disappointment however will not disconcert me” (Addams 691).

4. Red Herring

a) “I this evening presented your compliments and thanks to Mr. Hancock for his polite offer of his house, and likewise your compliments to his lady and Mrs. Katy” (Addams 690).

5. Restatement

a) “My countrymen want art and address. They want knowledge of the world. They want the exterior and superficial accomplishments of gentlemen, upon which the world has foolishly set so high a value” (Addams 691).

Key Words Small Pox>An infection which is very contagious and is

caused by poxvirus, some people call it variola too.

Boisterous>Rough, violent, loud, and very noisy.

Fondness>Weakness for something, and affection.

Emulate>To approach and complete equally or successfully.

Ostentatious>Meant to impress other around.

Summary Letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail Adams

They first talk about small pox, and make a wager about a certain woman.

He is telling his wife about a Baptists meeting he went to. He was disappointed because of the gentleman who preached. The gentleman's actions and words were violent and said with fury.

He wants to teach men how to make the most of their abilities and virtues an art. Planning to establish a philosophical center in Boston.

Explaining his wife how men want knowledge of the world, and how in England they are vain and ostentatious.

He wants to fix these “imperfections” and create philosophers, statesmen, and heroes for the New England or else it will not be better.
