Kadô Isaburo was born in 1940 in Wajima (Ishikawa

Prefecture), the very centre of the Japanese lacquer

tradition. He ranks as one of the greatest living masters

of contemporary Japanese lacquer art.

After finishing middle school at the age of 15, he began an

apprenticeship with the chinkin master Hashimoto

Tetsuhirô. On completion of this apprenticeship, Kadô

began creating lacquer panels using the chinkin technique,

which involves scratching thin lines into the surface of the

lacquer and then filling them with gold. He was strongly

influenced by contemporary American painters, whose

work he encountered in exhibitions in Tokyo. On reaching

the age of 30, his focus gradually shifted away from pure

artistic pieces to more functional lacquer objects. The wide

range of his work includes anything from bowls for everyday

use to the finest pieces commissioned for special occasions,

as well as pure art objects and pieces for installations.

In his craftsmanship, Kadô bridges the gap between life and

art. Through clarity and simplicity of form as well as

aesthetic purity Kado’s work captivates. His emphasis is

not only on the special character of the natural materials,

but also on the craftsman's creative process.

Kadô Isaburo is the recipient of numerous prizes and

awards. His work can be found in many public collections,

such as the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the

Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musée Guimet

in Paris, the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, the

Neue Sammlung in the Pinakothek der Moderne in

Munich and the Museum of East Asian Art in Berlin.
