The Pastor’s Pen

by Dr. Bill Turner, Senior Pastor

On Saturday morning we presented a plaque to the SDA congregation, in

appreciation for their gracious hosting of our congregation over these past 7

years. Jim Averitt and Ron Reaguer made appropriate remarks and Scot

Reeves presented the plaque with the names of the two congregations, the

dates of our time together (2009-2016) and a reference to Philippians 1:3.

When it was my turn to speak, I began with that biblical text from

Philippians where Paul tells the church there, "I thank my God upon every

remembrance of you." I told the SDA congregation that, in the years to come,

when we think of them it will be with deep gratitude for all the gifts they've

given us.

They've given us TIME - time for healing and looking ahead. Our church

was born out of separation and sorrow. For so many of our folks, it was a

radical and painful fracture. We had a lot of grief. We needed time to heal.

They gave us time.

They also gifted us with SHARED SPACE. Now, that's not easy. I've

served churches where we shared space with "outside" groups, and I can tell

you that overlaps in time and space can be tricky - or even conflictual and

troublesome. They have given us grace in this shared space. We're tried hard

to love it and take care of it, and they've forgiven us when breaks and spills

have happened. I thanked them for the gift of shared space.

They gave us A PLACE - to start a brand new church, and a lot of us had

never done that before. We quickly became a multi-denominational

congregation, and we needed a place to sort out what that means - and how

this new church would operate. We're grateful that they gave us a place to do

that.

And the SDA folks gave us A PARTNERSHIP. To the Philippians, Paul

says, "I am thankful for your partnership in the Gospel from the first day until

now." So do we feel about the SDA church. Oh, we're differently

theologically in some ways. We won't see eye to eye on all things biblical or

doctrinal. But Helen Harrington's poem puts it well. She talks about those

who meet and know "that they are people who, by different trails, sought

something true." Both of our congregations sought and found Jesus Christ as

Lord and Savior - and we found a Gospel to share with the whole world. By

different trails, we found something true! Instead of theological barriers, our

SDA friends built bridges of love and affirmation. John Wesley, who never

left the Anglican Church but started those "methods" groups which became

the Methodist Church, put it this way: "Though we cannot think alike, can we

not love alike? May we not be of one heart though we are not of one

opinion?" We're grateful for our partnership in the Gospel.

So, We DO - and WILL - thank God for every remembrance. We move

now to the place where God has led us. To the SDA congregation we bid

farewell and Godspeed for a good and bright future in their place. And, with

Paul, we offer, "Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord

Jesus Christ."

Amen - and thanks be to God!

Pictured left is Rev. Pavel Goia, pastor of the Seventh-day Adventist Church with our pastor, Dr. Bill Turner. Both men are layed back and just don’t let their feathers get ruffled…and they both are gracious. This editor has spoken over the phone with Rev. Goia many times over the years and if I had to sum up our conversations it would be “respectful and sincere.” What a blessing he has been to us! Pictured below is Rev. Goia with Scot Reeves, our Worship Committee Chair, Jim Averitt, who was very instrumental in leading us to rent the S-dA Church facilities and Dr. Turner, our pastor. This has been a great partnership and we are so thankful for our friends at S-dA!
