The Scientific Method is a basic problem solving technique that Everyone has used before. You usually don’t even know when you are using the Scientific Method to figure out the solution to a problem!

You ask what Scientific Method is. It is five steps for scientific problem solving. Below this text is listed the five steps of Scientific Method.

Research

Hypothesis

Experiment

Analysis

Conclusion

Research is the first part of the Scientific Method. You would use the research stage in the Scientific Method when you are interested in finding the answer to a problem.

Example, if you wanted to find out if strawberry jelly would taste good on toast, you’d probably ask a friend or family member something like this, “Does Toast taste good with Strawberry Jelly?” In the Scientific Method, this would be your research.

Hypothesis is the second part of the Scientific Method. You would create a hypothesis or educated guess after your research step. Hypothesis is the educated guess that you believe is going to happen during the experiment stage.

Example, you’d take the advice of the family member(s) or friend(s) and you’d make a hypothesis based on this information. Let’s just assume that your family and friends say in majority that they like strawberry jelly on their toast, this would probably make you create a hypothesis like “I think Strawberry Jelly will taste good on Toast.”

Experiment is the third part of the Scientific Method. You’d create an experiment after you have formed a hypothesis. An experiment is a series of tests to prove or disprove a hypothesis. In an experiment there is a control and a variable test. A variable (Jelly on Toast) test is usually hypothesis related, and a control (Plain Toast) test is simply the same thing but without the variable, and it will help show the results of the variable test.

Example, you have already made the hypothesis that you are probably going to like strawberry jelly on toast. To test this you must first eat a slice of toast with strawberry jelly on it, after ward you’d write down what you thought of the strawberry jelly toast. Then, you’d eat another slice of toast but this one will not have jelly on it, it’ll be a plain slice of toast. Write down your thoughts about this toast.

Analysis is the fourth stage in the Scientific Method. You take the data you wrote down from the experiment and you compare the control and the variable. You’d use the control (Plain Toast) data to focus on the variable (Jelly on Toast).

Example, when you finished the experiment you had two pieces of information. You would now compare your written records of the toast that had strawberry jelly on it and the info about the plain toast. Let’s say you described the toast as so, “The slice of Plain Toast was quite flavorless.” Your info on the strawberry jelly toast may be like, “The Toast with Strawberry Jelly was very tasty, I loved the Strawberry Jelly.” When comparing these two pieces of information you can get the idea that the strawberry jelly made the toast more sweet and “Tasty”.

Conclusion is the fifth and final step of the Scientific Method. The conclusion is when you have enough data from the analysis to prove or disprove your hypothesis.

Example, you take the information you got from the analysis and you make a final statement about it. The conclusion based on the experiments results are, “Strawberry Jelly does taste good on Toast.”

Scientific Method Test

Instructions: Take out blank piece of paper and number 1-4

1) Write the Scientific Method’s steps from in order by first step to last step.

2) True or False: You make an educated guess in the Research stage.

3) Multiple Choice: Which is not true? A) Experiment is when you test your hypothesis. B) Conclusion is the when you have enough data to prove or disprove your hypothesis. C) Research is the first stage and is used to form a hypothesis. D) All are true.

4) Fill in the Blank: Analysis is the stage that you compare your control data with your _________________ data.

Bonus) Describe one way you have used Scientific Method in past 5 days. (Restate!)
