Slide 2 By: Daniel Wu Casie Ogden Dara Olu Colleen Granados Jared Lyons Jason Luong HEALTHY CONFUSION Slide 3 A critic has said that one important measure of superior work of literature is its ability to produce in the reader a healthy confusion of pleasure and disquietude. Select a literary work that produces this healthy confusion. Write an essay in which you explain the sources of the pleasure and disquietude experience by the readers of the work. In other words: The AP board wants you to write about a situation that occurred in the novel where one of the characters was feeling mixed emotions so to speak. PROMPT 1985 Slide 4 The novel is filled with instances where the characters are conflicted with ambivalent emotions, namely Victor and the creature. While the characters are relaxing in one part of the novel, there is some sort of tension going on at the same time somewhere else. HOW DOES IT RELATE TO THE NOVEL? Slide 5 When Frankenstein creates the creature, a mood of suspense as well as pleasure for Frankenstein is apparent. The forbidden knowledge implicates the dangers of the unknown while it shows Frankensteins passion for science. How can I describe my emotions at this catastrophe, or how delineate the wretch whom with such infinite pains and care I had endeavoured to form?... The different accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature. I had worked hard for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body but now that I had finished, the beaurty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart (Shelley 35) EXAMPLE #1 Slide 6 When the creature has been shot by man after rescuing a human, he wants revenge for the injury and vows vengeance. However, when he recuperates, he considers to tame one of the children (who just happens to be William). [I] was disturbed by the approach of a beautiful childwill all the sportivenss of infancy. Suddenly, as I gazed on him, an idea seized me that this little creature was unprejudiced, and had lived too short a time to have imbibed a horror of deformity. If, therefore, I could seize him and educate him as my companion and friend, I should not be so desolate in this peopled earth (Shelley 102). EXAMPLE #2 Slide 7 1.Find an article, subject and verb The author creates. 2. Next, add adjectives and adverbs The passionate author empathetically creates. 3. Next, add prepositional phrases In Frankenstein, the passionate author empathetically creates pleasure and disquietude in the books somber and relaxing tone. 4. Add an appositive phrases. In Frankenstein, the passionate author, Mary Shelley, empathetically creates pleasure and disquietude in the books somber and relaxing tone. 5. Add a subordinate clause. In Frankenstein, the passionate author, Mary Shelley, empathetically creates pleasure and disquietude in the books somber and relaxing tone in order to allow the reader to feel a mixture of suspense and peace. 6 STEP THESIS 6. Add a triad of absolute phrases (this is your basis analysis or elaboration). In Frankenstein, the passionate author, Mary Shelley, empathetically creates pleasure and disquietude in the books somber and relaxing tone in order to allow the reader to feel a mixture of suspense and peace by using VIVID imagery to bring forth a mood of darkness advancing on a pale sliver of light, repetitious symbolism that reiterates the confusion and tension in the story and variegated syntax that abruptly brings things to an end. Slide 8 Within Frankenstein, the author is sure to incorporate gripping syntax into the novel. Shelly is unfailing in including many commas, semicolons, long drawn out sentences and abrupt periods; bringing many sentences to an unexpected close. This elicits many pauses while reading, causing you to stop your thought process right in its tracks. I remained motionless. The thunder ceased and, but the rain continued, and the scene was enveloped in an impenetrable darkness (pg.50). It was as the ass and the lap-dog; it surely the gentle ass whose intentions were affectionate, although his manners were rude, deserved better treatment than blows and execration (pg.81). As he said this, he led the way across the ice: I followed (pg.70). I trembled, and my heart failed within me, when, on looking up, I saw, by the light of the moon, the daemon at the casement (pg.121). The wretch saw me destroy the creature on whose future existence he depended for happiness, and, with a howl of despair and revenge, withdrew(pg.121). The author incorporates varying syntax into her novel so heavily in order to effectively make you really get an intense grasp of the dramatic touch she is incorporating into the novel; to keep the reader on his or her toes at all times. She also does this to sufficiently express the tone she is trying to set for any particular moment in the novel; whether it be somber, serious, or suspenseful. SYNTAX Slide 9 A college professor wrote a sentence on the blackboard with no punctuation. It looked like this: Woman without her man is nothing The professor then asked two students to punctuate it. The first student was male, and he did this: Woman, without her man, is nothing. The second student was female, and punctuated it this way: Woman: Without her, man is nothing. SYNTAX (CONTD) Slide 10 Within Frankenstein there is an incredible amount of imagery. From the authors description of the disturbing and physically frightening presence of the monster hes created, I beheld the wretch the miserable monster I had createdhis eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me (pg.35), to the description of the sceneries, landscapes, and natural elements the creature encounters on his own a gentle light stole over the heavens, and gave me a sensation of pleasureI gradually saw plainly the clear stream that supplied me with drink, and the trees that shaded me with their foliage (pg.71). The author includes all of this vivid imagery to give the reader a clear, distinct picture of what to base their imagination off of while reading the novel, which in turn makes the novel all the more interesting, engaging, and real. IMAGERY Slide 11 SHOUT OUT TO REUBEN Slide 12 AND LETS NOT FORGET THE LADIES Slide 13 Within Frankenstein, there is tons of symbolism present. Such as light, which is used numerous times in the novel. Shelly uses light in the novel to symbolizes enlightenment, and good. But it was also used to symbolize bad at the same time; such as when the creature realized the light coming from the fire, and at first it was good, but then he got too close to the fire and burned him, I was oppressed with cold, I found a fire which had been left b some wandering beggars, and was overcome with delight at the warmth I experienced from it. In my joy, I thrust my hand into the live embers but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain (pg.72). Shelly does this to make an example of how science and the progress of it is good and beneficial but that too much enlightenment can have profoundly negative effects. Water is a quite prevalent symbol in in the novel as well. Water gives the creature something to drink as he's wandering throughout the varying landscape, giving him a better understanding of nature and how it can be beneficial to him, I had first, however, provided for my sustenance for the day by a loaf of course bread and a cup with which I can drink of the pure water that flowed by my retreat (pg.74). The author does this to represent life and show the importance of not just water, but nature as a whole. In the novel the moon in incorporated a few time as well For example, before Elizabeth was killed, the moon was mentioned as being present, I happened to look upI felt a kind of panic on seeing the pale yellow light of the moon illuminate the chamber (pg.145); also when the Frankenstein said he looked up at the casement and saw the creatures shadow by the moons light I trembled, ad my heart failed within me, when, on looking up I saw, by the light of the moon, the daemon at the casement (pg.121). The author incorporates the moon to symbolizes calamity, the nearness of the monster, or to foreshadow that something bad has or is about to happen. The authors uses ample symbolism in the novel to allow the reader to get a deeper understanding of the novel and to delve a tad bit deeper than just the surface of what he or she is reading. SYMBOLISM Slide 14 When Victor decides to get married to Elizabeth, he knows that the creature is going to see him the day of his wedding, but he conceives to do it any way knowing that the creature is going to kill Elizabeth. SIGNIFICANT MOMENT #1 Slide 15 After the creature tells him to build him a wife, Victor consents initially but then he delays it. Victor suffers conflicting emotions while he delays his promise to the creature: he finds pleasure in the scenery of his vacation, but suffers anxiety, disgust and sickness at the same time when dwelling on the task he promised to fulfill.
