Thoughts from Our PIC (Priest in Charge)
Spring Training Already!
Lent is almost here! It feels to me that we just finished with our celebration of Christmas, and
now Lent is upon us. This is not my imagination; this year Lent comes early because Easter is earlier.
Ash Wednesday is February 10th, and the First Sunday in Lent is February 14.
I like to call Lent a season of spring training. Just as baseball players gather in warm places to
get ready for the baseball season, we prepare spiritually for Easter with the season of Lent. I like the
idea of training instead of grim penitence for Lent. It seems that many people either ignore Lent
completely or make it into a very dour season. Neither of these responses is very helpful. The idea of
training is to get in better shape for something important, like the start of baseball season.
For us as disciples of Jesus, we are training for the most important thing, to live loving and
grace-filled lives! Training is not negative, but it does involve effort and discipline. Doing push-ups
and running laps may not be fun, but doing these things gets you ready to play better. In our spiritual
lives, we get in shape with spiritual effort and discipline.
Our Lenten training can include removing some things from our lives, either temporarily or
permanently. We might find clearer focus in our lives by eating less or exercising more. We might
also want to remove unhelpful habits or attitudes from our lives, things like laziness, greed, or
jealousy. It could be helpful to simplify our lives some – not being so busy and running around all the
time. Removing a few activities from our lives for a while could create space to relax, rest, and pray
or meditate.
Lenten exercise can involve adding some positive actions to our daily schedules, such as time
for prayer, Bible reading, and doing good deeds for others. A great way to begin the season is to
attend worship on Ash Wednesday, February 10, at our 7 p.m. eucharist with imposition of ashes. Our
diocese has provided some good study assistance for Lent. The Bishop’s Bible Challenge for this year
starts in Lent and involves reading the books of Luke and Acts through Lent and the rest of the year. If
you would like to do this course of study, please see me or watch for bulletin announcements and e-
mails about how to follow the Bible Challenge. Bishop Beisner is also recommending a Lenten
devotional book, I Am with You, by an Episcopal priest, the Rev. Dr. Kathryn Greene-McCreight,
available at Amazon.
I wish us all a wonderful, helpful Lenten season of spiritual body building and exercise!

SENIOR WARDEN
Thank you to all of those that were able to attend our Annual Meeting after the
combined service on Sunday, 1/24. Everyone’s participation is much appreciated. It
was so nice to see how many folks in our congregation are involved in various aspects of
the life of our church. It really makes for a more vibrant and connected congregation
when everyone has a hand in it.
As a recap, Conrad Cookman, Bill Kaler, and Becky Frie completed their three
year term on our Vestry, and have been replaced by Sandra Crenshaw, Jean Paveglio,
and Cruz Saiz. We are so thrilled to welcome our new Vestry members.
For 2016, I will continue as Senior Warden. Jean Paveglio will serve as our Junior
Warden, Aaron Adkins will continue as Treasurer, and Sandra Crenshaw will serve as
our Clerk. Thank you to Jean, Aaron, and Sandra for serving in these roles!
Looking ahead to 2016, the Vestry will have some heavy lifting to do as we look
to permanently fill our Music Director position, continue with the momentum of our
capital improvement projects, and manage what is turning our to be a very austere
budget.
Thank you to everyone for your support. See you on Sunday!
Ryan Saunders, Senior Warden

WOMAN’S GUILDAt our January meeting, the following officers were confirmed for the new year: President,
Carol Adkins; Vice President, Cathy Crosby and Secretary/Treasurer, Jan Mirrione. Janet Jenkins will
continue to keep the Book Corner in good order and Rene Cress, as Sunshine Chair, will continue
spreading smiles to the congregation.
Plans were discussed and finalized for the reception for our Bishop Barry Beisner when he
makes his official visit at the end of January. It is gratifying the way so many members step forward to
help with making these receptions so enjoyable. The same is true of our traditional Mardi Gras
Brunch held the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Without all the helpful hands, it would not be as
successful as it has been. This year’s Brunch will be February 7 following a 10:00 AM service and if
you are reading this newsletter in time, we hope you will attend. Adult tickets are $5 with Child (5 &
under) tickets $3. There will be a buffet of a variety of stratas, fruits, breads, and of course desserts.
Some fun music and singing will round out the festivities.
The next Women’s Guild meeting will be Wednesday, February 17. All women of the
congregation are encouraged to attend the brief business meeting followed with some socializing time.
Beverages and dessert will be provided. Carol Adkins, President
Women’s Guild St. George’s Church

Thank You
At Christmas time, I usually get small gifts for the clergy and a few others, each year it seems
my list grows longer as I realize how many members of the congregation are involved in the
ministry/work of St Georges.
The gifts are never something huge or extravagant, but a thank you. When I was thinking
about what I would do this year, there was some show or movie on TV and one of the characters was a
military guy who gave the main character in the story a Unit Coin. Some where I have a coin from
2nd Armored Division and remembered this way of recognizing folks for their efforts. Having thought
about this in advance, when Sandy and I were in LA late December, we stopped past one of
the California Missions gift shops and picked up 35 St George’s medals. It is nice to have
your Christmas shopping done early. Something that would work for both men and women as
it can be a pocket coin a man might carry in his pocket or something a lady might wear on a
chain or bracelet.
Getting home I started writing a list of those to whom I would give one of these little medals as
a thank you, only to discover that 35 might not be enough! As Fr Ray mentioned in his Sermon early
last month, we are a congregation that really does shared ministry. As I began working my way
through all of the various ministries that make St George’s the place it is, it amazed me how many
people are doing the work of St George’s. Having spent 20 years in the military and then moving a
couple of times after getting out, Sandy and I have attended and been active in a lot of Episcopal
churches. Regardless of the size, normally there have been maybe 20-25 people who do all the work,
serving on vestry, singing in the choir, working on the Altar Guild, volunteering in the office, etc.
St George’s average Sunday attendance for two services is 45; I’ve come to realize that every
one of those folks is probably on my list or should be. So much for having gotten my Christmas
shopping done early, looks like I’ll be making a trip to a nearby California Mission for more St
George medals. (Yes I could go on line, which I did and yes I did find a St George’s medal – for $42
each. I love and appreciate all of you dearly, but my budget does not allow for those medals).
I had Fr Ray bless the medals, but I’ve been a bit slow in handing out the St George’s medals
as I want to do it personally, not just put them in envelopes. So if you haven’t gotten one yet, I’ll get
to you and hopefully before next Christmas.
Thanks to all of you – for making St George’s a place where we all work to spread the
Kingdom.

Dear St George’s, someone brought me a very large bouquet of
bright colored flowers in a glass vase, unfortunately I don’t
know who brought it, but I want to thank you and all of St
