Avalanche
Four people died in an avalanche smashing through an Austrian ski resort
popular with British tourists. Snow tumbled on to a car on a road approaching the Tyrolean town of
Obergurgl, which is packed with British holidaymakers on school half-term. It is thought two adults and two children - all passengers in the vehicle and
understood to be German tourists - died after being buried underneath the crushing snowfall..
In a second avalanche, also on the edge of the high-altitude resort, rescuers pulled a couple from their car unscathed after it was covered in snow, reports said.
Marion Telsnig, from Thomson Ski and Snowboarding, said: "There are a lot of British tourists in Obergurgl at the moment because of the school holidays.
"Over the last two days the snowfall has been particularly heavy in the area and it hasn't stopped yet.
"They have had nearly a metre of snow in the last day and a half and they are on avalanche warning four (out of five), which is quite high.
Four die in Austrian avalanches
There was an avalanche in the French alps
when British tourists were skiing and the mountain top fell on top of them and they all died.
Other avalanches
An avalanche is a mountain top of snow that
gets overloaded and it gets too heavy for the mountain and it falls and it clears everything in its path.
