The Blitz

• The city of London was bombed by the Luftwaffe for 57 consecutive nights and many towns and cities across the country followed.

• Other important military and industrial centres such as Glasgow, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, Portsmouth, Plymouth , Swansea & Southampton also suffered heavy air attacks and high numbers of casualties.

Why did the Blitz start?

• The Blitz started when German bombs missed their target and hit many innocent people.

• The PM( Neville Chamberlin) ordered a bombing raid on Berlin the Nazi capital

• HITLER got revenge on Britain by bombing, the people instead of the military areas.

ARW!Many people hid in Anderson shelters during air raids.

BlackoutsBlack outs help to hide the big cities from German bombs .

In the black out people had to cover their windows with blankets and turn their light out.

Barrage balloons

Barrage balloons were used to force plane higher in the air and make bombs less accurate.

If a plane flew in to a barrage balloons the plane would explode.

If a planes wing hit the razor wire holding the barrage balloon it would chop the wing off.

Gas masks

• The people of Britain wore gas masks to survive German gas attacks.

• Arp wardens help clean up deviated cities.

• Made shore people got in to shelter.

• Evacuation is when all the children in the cities which were being bomb; were sent to the country side.
