ADVANTAGES OF GMAIL Accessible from any computer Tremendous storage space Fast searching for old email Easily ties to other Google applications
(Calendar, etc.) Good Spam filtering
THE GMAIL LAYOUT
SEARCHINGSearching is easy – you can search for
anything you want – be it a name, email address keyword, etc. It does not allow for searching part of a word, though. Example – I could search for lighthouse and get any instances of the word lighthouse. However, if I search for light, I will not get the words lighthouse – just light.
ADVANCED SEARCHINGBy using the “advanced search” link to
the right of the search box, I can access more options.
LABELS Gmail doesn’t use folders, it uses labels. Emails can have multiple labels. How do
you store a single message in two folders?
Removing a label will not remove the messages from Gmail
You can create a new label from Labels/Manage Labels or Labels/Create New (if you have a message open)
CONTACTS Contacts are unified across Google Apps
(calendar, etc.) Contacts are added automatically Use the Contacts Link on the left side for
management
MORE ON CONTACTS Contacts can be kept in groups Contacts can be exported Contacts can be in multiple groups
(labels)
CALENDAR Allows for multiple views Appointments can be scheduled from
Gmail requests and tied to Contacts Can text or email you reminders about
appointments Can be shared with other users, even
those outside the organization
SCHEDULING EVENTS Gmail will tie the “Where” box to a map
if it can You can add guests by using the box at
right.
BASIC HTML VERSION Runs better over slow connections Loses some of the visual effects, but not
functionality Can be set as a standard view, per user
