Tupac Shakur
TUPAC SHAKUR……… (EARLY YEARS)
Tupac was born as Lesane Parish Crooks on June 16, 1971 in N.Y.C. (New York City)
Afeni Shakur (his mother) eventually renamed him as “Tupac Shakur” which “Tupac” meaning “Shining serpant, blessed one” and “Shakur” meaning “Thankful to God.”
Tupac grew up poor in the ghetto in the African-American part of Harlem, N.Y.
Growing up….
Tupac wanted to move to Baltimore, M.D. As they did, they ended up in a rat-infested
house with little heat. It was similar to the ghetto in Harlem, N.Y.
The new city had other problems as well because, Baltimore was the highest rate of teen pregnancy, the highest rate of suicide, the highest rate of teens killing teens, the highest rate of blacks killing blacks, the highest rate of AIDS within the black community……..and that’s where he chose to live.
Moving to Marin City
In 1988, Tupac and his mother Afeni and his sister Sekyiwa moved to Marin City, C.A.
Marin City was similar to Baltimore, rough streets, and a poor neighborhood.
In the ghetto, where the Shakur’s lived, many residents used the drug, “Crack Cocaine.” Soon, Afeni started to use this drug. Her use began to come an addiction.
Tupac’s first performance……….. In Marin City, Tupac was about to give his
first performance. It wasn’t like rapping with his friends in Baltimore, this was real, for a real crowd.
His performance would be for, his mother, who was recovering from a drug addiction, his Aunt Gloria, his stepfather, who could not attend because he was in prison, and his friends from Baltimore that died from gunshots.
Major highlights Tupac was becoming famous and
very known around the nation cause of his music.
As he started becoming famous and known, he started attending more and more parties and events.
Comparison……………Tupac was similar to Wilma Rudolph. They
both had rough early years but didn’t quit and became known people
