When did the Civil War occur?
The Civil war started on April 12th 1861, when Confederate troops fired at Fort Sumter.
It finally ended on April 9th 1865 after almost 4 years.

The Confederacy
Many believe that there are two different principles on why southern states seceded which caused the Civil War.
Some believe that the southern states wanted states’ rights, in which they could not follow a national law, while others believe it was the difference in the beliefs of slavery.
Leaders of the Confederacy
The leaders of the Confederacy were:
Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, And Braxton Bragg.
Jefferson Davis
Born in Kentucky on June 3, 1808. Begin service in the army in 1828. Married Sarah Taylor on June 17,
1835. Married Varina Howell on February
26, 1845. He began to serve as the U.S.
Secretary of War in 1853.
The Confederate States
The confederate states were the following: Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
The Border States?
The border states were Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia.
Even though these states believed in slavery, they stayed with the Union because they were Anti-secession.
Allies
There were many allies during the civil war, but the biggest was when Britain and France joined with the Confederates.
The 5 Main Events and Battles
Fort Sumter- the first battle of the Civil War, April 12th 1861.
1st battle of Bull Run- July 21st 1861. Battle of Gettysburg- July 1st 1863. 2nd battle of Fort Fisher. Battle of Appomattox Courthouse.
Weapons
I will be going over these 4 different weapons of war:
Napoleon, Saber, Mountain Howitzer, Minie Ball.
Napoleon
Smooth Bore, Muzzle Loading, 12 pounder cannon.
Started using in 1857. Favorite of the Union and the
Confederacy.
Saber
Used throughout all of the Civil War. Made very few casualties. An edged sword that can only be
very dangerous if in the hands of a trained trooper.
Mountain Howitzer
Small and most portable artillery. Used throughout the whole war. 12lb muzzle loading cannon that was
best in mountainous areas.
Minie Ball
Started using in 1848. Lead Rifle Bullet. Revolutionized Warfare. Is a highly precise far traveling
projectile.
Accuracy of Information
According to the book Fort Sumter, Fort Sumter had begun building in 1829, but it says on Wikipedia.com Fort Sumter had begun building in 1827.
This proves that book is much more accurate then the internet.
How did it all end?
April 9th, 1865 – 2 commanders surrendered at the Appomatox Courthouse and their troops went home on parole.
April and May – remaining Confederate troops were captured.
May 10th – Jefferson Davis captured in Georgia.
Reconstruction
The end of the Civil War led to the Reconstruction Period.
Men and women - black and white- had to work on rebuilding America to give it the same unity it had before.
