The Grumman Wildcat was built under licence by the Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors. The FM-1 was identical to the F4F-4 and 1800 aircraft were ordered from 18 April 1942 of which 1060 were delivered. The serials were 14992/15951 and 46738/46837. The first flight was on 31 August 1942 and 221 aircraft went to the Royal Navy. The FM-2 was a production version of the XF4F-8 and had a length of 28'11", 8.81m and a Wright R-1820-56 engine. 4777 were built with serials 15952/16791, 46838/47437, 55050/55649, 56684/57083, 73499/75158 and 86297/86973 whilst a batch with serials 86974/87719 was cancelled. 370 were supplied to the Royal Navy. A number of FM-2s were converted as FM-2P reconnaissance fighters. Refer also to F4F, F2M

The Mercator was a patrol aircraft with mixed propulsion, the two jet engines being installed in the rear of the piston engine nacelles. Two XP4M-1 prototypes were ordered on 6 July 1944 with serials 02789/02790. They were fitted with R-4360-4 and J33-A-17 engines and the first flight was on 20 September 1946. The production version was the P4M-1 of which 19 were built with serials 121451/121454, 122207/122209 and 124362/124373. In 1950 an order was placed for the conversion of all aircraft to P4M-1Q for ECM duties and other reconnaissance duties. The first flight took place in February 1951 and it is likely that 121452 was not converted because it crashed in March 1951. The aircraft, which were withdrawn in 1960, carried often bogus serials, such as 194873.

The XP5M-1 prototype of this flying boat was converted from a PBM-5 and was ordered on 26 June 1946 with serial 98616. Initially the development was designated as PBM-6. It flew for the first time on 30 May 1948. This was followed by 160 production P5M-1s with serials 124910/124914, 126490/126511, 127696/127719, 130265/130351 and 135452/135473. A batch with serials 135449/135451 was cancelled. The first flight was on 22 June 1951. The USCG ordered seven aircraft as P5M-1G with serials 1284/1287 and 1295/1297 and these were eventually converted to P5M-1T when they were transferred to the US Navy with serials 149825/149831. In addition a single P5M-1 was converted to this standard. It had serial 135462. 80 P5M-1s were converted for anti-submarine duties and were redesignated as P5M-1S. A single P5M-1 with serial 130286 was fitted with a T-tail, as a prototype of the P5M-2. The P5M-2 version had a redesigned bow and T-tail. The span was 118'2", 36.02m, length 101'1", 30.81m whilst R-3350-32WA engines were fitted. 115 were built with serials 135474/135543, 137846/137848, 140140/140150, 141252/141258, 146440/146445, 147539/147542, 147575/147576 and 147926/147937. Batches with serials 141259/141260 and 147938/147945 were cancelled. The first flight of the P5M-2 was on 29 April 1954. Most of the aircraft, including 137848 and 141258, were later fitted with anti-submarine equipment and redesignated as P5M-2S. The USCG obtained four P5M-2Gs with serials 1312 and 1318/1320. They were later transferred to the US Navy and given serials 149832/149835. On 18 September 1962 those aircraft remaining in service were redesignated as follows: US Navy Tri-service P5M-1 P-5A P5M-1S SP-5A P5M-1T TP-5A P5M-2 P-5B P5M-2S SP-5B The P5M-3 version was a 1956 proposal with 4 Wright R-1820-42 and a single General Electric XJ85. It also carried the designation P7M-1 before being cancelled. Refer also to P7M, PBM, P-5

The Seamaster was a jet engined flying boat. Two XP6M-1 prototypes were ordered on 31 October 1952 with serials 138821/138822. They were fitted with J71-A-4 engines and the first flight was on 14 July 1955. The YP6M-1 was the pre-production version and six were built with serials 143822/143827. The first flight took place on 20 January 1958. On 9 March 1959 the order to stop flying was issued and the last flight was on 18 August 1959. The P6M-2 production version was powered by 4 Pratt & Whitney J75-P-2 engines and 24 aircraft were ordered on 29 August 1956. The order was gradually cut back to 18, then 10 and finally cancelled on 24 August 1959 although by then three aircraft had been delivered. The delivered aircraft had serials 145877/145879, the cancelled aircraft had serials 145876, and 145880/145899. It has been alleged that in 1962 the P-6 designation was applied to the P6M but there is no evidence of this. Refer also to P-6

Originally designated as P5M-3, the P7M-1 development was cancelled. A mock-up model was built in 1956. The design used advanced hydrodynamics that would allow it to fly near the sea surface with dipping sonars like those used on ships. The single jet engine was mounted atop the fuselage with exhaust nozzles ducted across the wing surface to cut landing and stall speeds to only 43-48 mph, reducing the danger of impact damage in open-sea landings. The Mariner was a twin engined flying boat. Initial tests in 1937 used a 1/4 scale model with registration N19168. A single XPBM-1 was order with serial 0796 on 30 June 1937. It made its first flight on 18 February 1939 and was later converted as XPBM-1A for armament tests. The first production version was designated as PBM-1 and was fitted with a dihedral tailplane configuration. 20 were built with serials 1246 and 1248/1266. Aircraft 1247 was completed as the XPBM-2 with an increased fuel capacity and provisions for catapult launching. The PBM-3 version had a length of 80', 24.38m and was fitted with R-2600-12 engines. 379 were ordered from 1 November 1940 but they were delivered as PBM-3B, -3C, -3D, -3R and -3S.
