Manifest Destiny: Virtual Tour

*Trail of Tears*The trail of tears was an actual trail where the Indians were pushed away from their land because of the discovery of gold in Georgia. Georgians continued to take Native American lands and forced them into the frontier. By 1825 the Lower Creek had been completely removed from the state, leading many people over there to further make room.

*Oregon Trail* The Oregon Trail was the best land route for travel to the western United States. Mountain men were usually brought when bringing tools, livestock, and supplies to cross the mountains. Many may believe that without the trail, most of the American west would today be part of Canada or Mexico.

*Sutters Mill*One day James Marshall noticed some metal glittering in the drained area. Within a few days, he headed for Sutter's Fort, where he and John Sutter tested the metal to several other tests. The conclusion was clear - it was gold! This lead to the Sutters Mill where John Sutter a Swiss emigrant (who arrived in California in 1839)built and engineered it. When people heard of this discovery it spun out of control to get to the WEST

*Chinook Point*Chinook Point is a point in Pacific County, Washington. Captain Robert Gray, the first non-native to enter the Columbia River, saw the river from Chinook Point in 1792. His explorations gave the United States a strong position in its later territorial contests with Great Britain. This led to the expansions towards Chinook to go forward in the prior expedition.

* The Alamo*

The 1836 Battle of the Alamo had nothing to do with the Mexican War, which occurred 10 years later. The United States was not involved with the Alamo. The Alamo was part of the Texas war for independence from Mexico. Texas actually became it's own country. Thats why Texans are so proud of their Lone Star Flag! After a few years of being a free republic, Texas decided on joining the United States. This helped other Americans want to expand out to the Mexican territory and have freedom.

*Gateway to the West*President Thomas Jefferson had a vision of the spread of freedom and democracy throughout the west. This was a tribute to when the Lewis and Clark expedition left St. Louis and headed up the Missouri River in May 1804 which led people eager to explore more and to walk the Gateway to the West and be proud of what they accomplished to the west.
