A Note from the Executive & Producing Artistic Director, Andrew Vonderschmitt

Hello and welcome to the Playhouse. I wanted to take a moment of your time to say thank you. Thank you for your continued support of the Playhouse and thank you for supporting the arts in general. As an artist I understand the commitment and responsibility I have to you, the audience. Art is not created in a vacuum. It takes an observer to finish the formula. This particular art form, on this particular day and time, in this particular venue, is for you, and you alone. I honestly hope that you enjoy your visit with us and that you will return soon.

I am always open to comment, complaint, compliment, concern, or just plain conversation. How’s that for alliteration? Of course, I enjoy compliments over complaints, but who doesn’t learn from input of any kind? A healthy dialogue with you, the audience, is very important to me. I can be reached via email, snail-mail, phone, fax, or you can drop by the Playhouse. However you choose to contact me and tell me how I’m doing, I welcome it.

Thank you, once again, for your patronage. Enjoy the show.

Director’s Notes

The SettingThe Time: 1960s The Place: The living room of a country house some distance from Paris.

Act One - Early evening Act Two - Two hours later

How lucky we are to experience live theater! How lucky we are to laugh and cry and ponder the profound messages of our best playwrights as their stories unfold before us only a few feet from our seats. You can’t Snapchat it, Facebook it, or Instagram it. You can’t multi-task it or save it to your hard drive. You have to experience it in the moment, fully engaged, with all your senses freed from distraction, so you don’t miss a vital plot point or the funniest moment or the surprise ending. Each actor gets one shot at delivering a line, and each audience member gets one chance at receiving it. We share this experience in real time, collectively operating without a net, and that’s what makes this the most intimate of all the performing arts. I am so lucky to have spent the last 20 years directing, acting and producing live theater and events. Being here at the Long Beach Playhouse I can’t help but think of some of the talented people in the Playhouse family who have inspired me along the way: Betty Motsinger, Lolly Daggett, Lucy Daggett, Dottie and Ken Reiner, Mitchell and Jane Nunn, Michael Ross, Donna Fritsche, Darlene Hunter Chaffee and Kathy Davis. I labor in the shadow of their generosity and support, and I hope some of what I learned will provide you with something that entertains you and transports you into the hilarious world these hard-working actors have created for you. Spencer Tracy once said of acting, “Know your lines and don’t bump into the furniture.” Great advice to be sure, but there is so much more to it – it’s knowing to buy your director drinks after the show. - GFM

You may remember her as Suzette in a previous rendition of Don’t Dress for Dinner, Mrs. Puffin in Goodnight Mrs. Puffin, Mrs. Erlynne in Lady Windermere’s Fan and Judith Bliss in Hay Fever. Very best wishes to all you wonderful patrons and enjoy the show.

Cort Huckabone (Robert)Cort was seen earlier this year as Paravicini in Agatha’s Christie’s The Mousetrap. Other favorite roles include Orgon in Tartuffe, John Smith in Run For Your Wife, and Serge in ART. COMING SOON

An announcement in the local pa-per states the time and place when

a murder is to occur in MissBlacklock’s Victorian house. The vic-tim is not one of the house’s several occupants, but an unexpected and

unknown visitor. What follows is a classic Christie puzzle of mixed mo-tives, concealed identities, a sec-

ond death, a determined Inspector grimly following the twists and turns, and Miss Marple on hand to provide

the final solution.

Returning for its 5th incarnation at LBP, this quick-paced, highly theatrical

re-telling of Charles Dickens’ classic tale will delight the entire family. In 19th century England, the ghosts of

Christmases past, present and future show Ebenezer Scrooge the poverty of his material wealth and the blessings that come with generosity. Can they convince him to change before it’s too late? Come spend time with the

characters you’ve come to love – Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, and of course the

irascible miser himself.
