Muckraker Project

Muckraker ProjectBy: _____________________________ Mrs. Frye Period 7

Lewis HineLewis Hine was a muckraker trying to stop child labor. He went around the country and used photography to show society how bad child labor was. The result of his work and his photographs were that child labor laws were passed. In addition to photographing child labor, he also photographed the empire state building and wrote Men at work and Children at work. Because of his work child labor laws were soon passed.Pictures:

Jacob RiisJacob Riis was a muckraker trying to get the ghettos and tenements cleaner. To try to fix this, he went undercover and took pictures of the immigrants and their miserable lives in the tenements. The results were that his work raised public awareness, and people began to notice the bad conditions. They started to clean the tenements and passed building codes. Before Riis became a muckraker he was offered a job from a news agency and gladly took it.Pictures:

5Upton SinclairUpton Sinclair wanted to expose the dirty working conditions of the meat packing industry in Chicago. To try to get the meat packing industry cleaned up he wrote a book called The Jungle to show how bad the working conditions were. The results of his work was that laws were passed for meat inspections, which later led to food inspections. Peoples reactions to his book were that they were disgusted and they were shocked at how terrible their food was being treated. Pictures:

Lisa P. Jackson (Modern Day Muckraker)Lisa P. Jackson started an organization-EPA-in order to help end pollution. Her point of pollution is that it should stop and we should keep the world clean. She wants to do this by cleaning up the major pollution areas like the factories and landfills. Today in most schools there are lots of recycling bins and recycling programs to help with this issue.

We agree with her because no one wants to live in a world full of trash. It is up to the people who live on this planet to clean it up. We cant just leave it up to one organization to fix all the problems.Pictures:
