THE HISTORY OF JOHN DALTON
FATHER OF ATOMIC THEORY
Developed the idea of the Atomic theory Dalton proposed that all matter is made up of atoms and that they are
invis ib le and indestructible bui ld ing blocks (matter cannot be created nor destroyed)
His theory also enforces how diff erent elements al l have atoms with diff erent s izes and masses, and that al l atoms of a s ingle element is identical
He also proposed that e lements cannot be altered or destroyed chemical ly, but they can be combined to create even more chemical compounds
His theory states that al l compounds are composed of combinations of these atoms in defi ned ratios
He also says that chemical reactions lead to the rearrangement of the reacting atoms (reactants and products)
The designation (naming) of the atomic mass unit is as a Dalton
Time of Discovery: Dalton began to come up with the atomic theory when he publ ished an art ic le for the Manchester Library and Phi losophical in 1803 in Manchester, UK. He also publ ished his book A New System of Chemical Phi losophy in 1808 which covers the fol lowing parts of h is theory.
