omen comprise almost half of the human population as well as the population of our country. While it is universally Wacknowledged by economists that all the wealth of the world is not sufficient to valuate woman's contribution to home and society in monetary terms, this invaluable contribution is neither finding a noticeable place in the GDP, nor is it vesting them with rightful power of making decisions especially on critical issues even at home, nor ensuring their entitlement to property.

The Government of India has been devising strategies and formulating schemes to correct this situation, to encourage women to step out from behind the screen, to give open expression to their creative genius, and to claim recognition of their rightful place in society. The key is economic empowerment.

Socio-economic empowerment of women means empowering women economically and socially by eliminating exploitation and discrimination, enabling them to develop their full potential to be active participants in nation building, getting their rightful share of benefits of growth and prosperity, which can be achieved only through holistic approach. For this purpose, the National Mission for Empowerment of Women (NMEW) was operationalised in 2011, with the objectives of progressively eliminating violence against women, alleviating poverty, ensuring their access to health and education, gender mainstreaming of programmes, policies, institutional arrangements, generate awareness regarding their rights to benefits under various schemes and programmes, and create structures, if necessary, at different levels of administration to achieve the objectives. The Mission aimed to achieve the goals by focusing on inter-sectoral coordination among different ministries, with MWCD as the nodal entity.

SHGs, which facilitate women with access to micro credit and micro finance, have proved to be the best effective vehicle to take the message to women inhabiting even the remotest rural parts. In view of this, SHG promotion has been receiving a big berth in strategies concerning women empowerment. Above everything, independent income - economic empowerment - is a priority issue. Social and national well-being hinge on it, because women focus attention on family and therefore would spend their income for the health and well being of the family. Creating gainful economic activities for women is the obvious solution for this teaser, and SHG is the best medium to spread the idea.

In order to strengthen the SHGs, initiatives like National Rural Livelihood Mission (formerly SGSY) of MoRD, Swayamsidha of MWCD, and similar programmes of other ministries/organisations need to be integrated. The Mission undertakes to ensure that access to credit by women SHGs under the schemes of NABARD, Rashtriya Mahila Kosh, financial institutions like NSCFDC, NBCFDC, NSKFDC of MoSJ&E and nationalised banks, is coordinated well, and delivered in time.

Creation of self-employment opportunities and livelihood alternatives for women demand training and skill upgradation among them, facilitated under the schemes of MoMSME, MoLE, MoRD, MoWCD, etc. Through SHGs, sustainability of livelihood activities is ensured by way of providing required forward, backward and horizontal linkages. Also, the processing, storage, distribution and market networks would be put in a convergent mode to strengthen the livelihood of women.

Support to Training and Employment Programme for Women (STEP) and Mahila E-Haat are two of the most important of about 147 schemes of the central government, catering to the different needs of women in the country. The schemes include women of all age groups, from all social and economic classes. The states are also running about 195 schemes cumulatively in respective states. The primary aim of all the central and state schemes for women is to provide women protection, better health facilities, adequate education to make them employable and economically strong.

ni-msme has always been keenly involved with promotion of women entrepreneurship and empowerment of women. The Institute has executed a number of research, consultancy and training projects in this direction, especially through its women studies cell (WSC). The Institute has shared out its expertise in this domain to developing countries as well.

Through this column, we invite the woman entrepreneurs and self-enterprise enthusiasts to make use of the expertise and service of ni-msme, in the eventuality of coming across challenges hindering their enterprise initiative.

Dr. Sanjeev ChaturvediDirectorNational Institute for Micro, small and Medium

Enterprises (ni-msme)Hyderabad, India

Dear Dr. Chaturvedi,

Having completed the International Training Programme on Planning and

Promotion of Agro and Food Enterprises (PAFE) from 22 January to 16 March

2018 at the National Institute for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ni-smme)

was a enriching and unforgettable experience for me.

India and Colombia have many similarities regarding needs and issues in the agricultural area. For both countries, agriculture

plays an important role in the national economy. Therefore, at the beginning of the course I had many expectations for

knowing the technological developments that India has made in this area.

The content of the course was very good and I was particularly interested on the technological developments of some research

centers visited. Such as the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) for developing new products to increase

the added value of many fruits and vegetables, the Society for Energy, Environment & Development about solar drying of fruits

and species and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-arid Tropics for developing a wide range of products

from chickpea, pigeonpea, pearl millet, sorghum and groundnut. These developments show the creativity and entrepreneurship

of many researchers looking for new business alternatives and new markets, including export markets, where India should be

a global leader since the country is the second world's largest producer of fruits and vegetables. These advances which can be

developed in several countries, must be transferred to farmers and their families in order to satisfy their basic subsistence

needs and help them to reduce the post-harvest losses, increase the value added of crops, increase their farming incomes and

improve quality of life for both producers and consumers.

The fact of studying and living in the same campus was pleasant and more for the enjoyable environment and beautiful nature.

The administrative staff always gave us permanent help and kindness and our directors Dr. Shreekant Sharma and Mr. J.

Koteswara Rao their continuous guidance and enthusiastic support. In addition, the boarding, accommodation and library

facilities were very good as well as the cultural activities were exceptional allowing the integration of all participants and

giving us a time to enjoy and have fun.

Finally, one of the most important advantage of doing an international program like this was having the opportunity to meet

people from many parts of the world. Learning about new cultures expands our horizons, shows us the differences around the

world and allows us gain greater respect for other cultures.

Missing you all from Colombia and wishing you many successes in the future training programmes.

Sincerely,

Johanna Aristizabal GalvisExpert – Independent ConsultantQuality standards, traceability and processing of tropical cropsMs. Johanna Aristizabal with H.E. Ravi Bangar, Ambassador of India to Colombia and Ecuador at Bogota Calle.
