One of the sinister techniques that thieves use to steal your identity is called phishing. Phishing is a practice that online fraudsters use to “fish” for confidential passwords and financial data from the “sea” of Internet users using email. Phishing has two major components: n Spoofing occurs when thieves create a near exact replica of an existing website n Spamming occurs when you receive unsolicited email also known as junk email. A typical email will tell you that you need to update your account information for a Organization account. The email contains a link that when “clicked” will take you to the spoofed web site where you are asked for some personal and financial information. Once you enter in this information, the identity thief has access to it. DON’T GET HOOKED BY PHISHING WHAT YOU CAN DO: n Delete unknown email messages and don’t download attachments or click on links included in the email n Don’t send personal or financial information via email n Make sure that you are on a secure, encrypted website before entering personal or financial information. Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. One of the sinister techniques that thieves use to steal your identity is called phishing.

2014 Annual Meeting of Members and Nominations for Board of Directors

The 2014 Annual Meeting of the members of South Texas Area Resources (STAR) Credit Union will be held Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 6:00pm. The meeting will take place at the Corpus Christi Event Center, 3126 Holly at Kostoryz. This year the Nominating Committee composed of Hector Saenz, Chairperson and committee members, Linda Edwards and Diana Gonzalez have selected the following candidates for the three (3) expiring terms:

EDOLINA AMADOR Nina has been employed with CITGO Refining & Chemicals for 32 years and currently works as a Foreign-Trade Zone Coordinator. She serves on the Board of Trustees of the South Texas Institute for the Arts and has served on the coun-cil of the Area Council on Aging. Nina has also attended educational courses and programs for Board Members. She has served on the STAR CU Board of Directors for 16 years.

JOSEPH CARMONA Joe retired after having been employed with Lyondell Basell Industries for 33 years. He served four years in the U.S. Navy with a tour in Vietnam and was honorably discharged. He completed 2 years of college and has done a tour as a Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) member. Joe is a Board Member of the C.C. Recreational Club and has served on the STAR CU Board of Directors for 14 years.

DENNIS HILL Dennis has been employed with Lyondell Basell Industries for 27 years and is currently a Lab Technician. He attended the University of Texas of the Permian Basin and has a Master’s Degree in Microbiology and graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Odessa Junior College. He is educated in Mathematics, Chemistry and Microbiology. He served on the Greens Committee of the River City Golf Course and has served on the STAR CU Board of Directors for 2 years.

Nominations other than those of the Nominating Committee may be made only by petition by at least 25 credit union members in good standing. Each nominee with the petition shall submit a brief statement of qualifications, biographical data and signed agreement to serve. The closing date for receiving nominations by petition shall be January 31, 2014.
