  • Birth I was born on October 1, 1730 near Princeton, NJ. Family My family was very well-known and respected, with considerable wealth. School I studied law at the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University.

  • I went to the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. I went to the College of New Jersey, now known as Princeton University. I graduated, passed the Bar and began to practice law. My legal practice became one of the largest in the colonies.

  • o I was appointed to the royal council of New Jersey in 1765, and remained a member until the government was reformed. o In 1774 I was appointed Supreme Court Justice of New Jersey. o In 1776 I replaced one of the New Jersey delegates to the Congress and voted for independence.

  • My Trip to Great Britain In 1766 and 1767, I gave up my professional business in order to travel with my family. I visited England, Scotland, and Ireland. Because of my family and reputation I was welcomed and presented at court. I was consulted on American affairs by many distinguished people.

  • I was released several years later, badly treated and in very poor condition. Tragically, I never regained my health in the years that followed. I managed to move my family to safety, but I was captured and imprisoned by the British. New Jersey was overrun by the British in November of 1776.

  • I lost all of my extensive library, writings, and all of my property during the British Invasion. I died a pauper on February 28, 1781, in Princeton, New Jersey.
