Introduction
Background
“Parents haven’t always been welcome in schools as partners. In the past, many students’
lives were segregated into two distinct realms: school and home. But in today’s always-on, 24/7
learning environment, that dynamic is changing. Parents are increasingly invested in their students’
academic lives. And in recent years, flipped and online learning have positioned the classroom firmly
in students’ homes. That’s why it’s more important than ever to give parents a reciprocal window
into their children’s education. Transparency builds trust and, hopefully, engagement. It enrolls
parents as helpers in holding students accountable for their success, and it helps them provide the
support their kids need to learn.” (Johnson & Sievek, 2014, p. 1).
School districts have had websites for several years. In the past, websites had to be coded be
coded by hand, created using difficult-to-use tools, or created through a third-party content
management system. Websites used to be difficult to create, difficult to keep updated, and/or
expensive. Now, teachers can create and update their own classroom websites easily, and for free
(Weebly, 2016).
This training serves to provide educators with communication strategies to reach parents as
partners in their child’s education through the use of a classroom website. Through the use of a
website creation tool, Weebly, teachers will create a classroom website. Among other features, the
classroom website will include a classroom blog page as well.
The training involves the setup of a Weebly account and the creation of a classroom website
with Weebly. By participating in this professional development, the participants will learn how to
create and customize their own websites.
Needs Assessment Survey. The purpose of the needs assessment is to evaluate teachers’
perception of their need to improve communications with parents. It will also evaluate the
teachers’ perception of parents’ interest in improving communications and bettering their
involvement in their childrens’ education. We will also assess teachers’ technological
proficiency with making websites. We will gain an understanding if there is a need for
professional development in making classroom websites.
The results of the survey will be shared with the participants with charts and graphs depicting
their answers. Answers will be used to conform the content of the PD to the participants’ needs.
The population will be K-12 teachers. Participation will be voluntary. The needs assessment
will be conducted with an on-line survey. It will be an anonymous survey and will be distributed
two months before the PD.
Data collection will be achieved with a survey designed using Qualtrics Survey software (see
Appendix A). Link to survey:

The PD team will meet one month prior to PD to modify content of the PD to meet the needs of
the participants. Data analysis will inform the PD presenters about the participants’ perceived
need for improving communication with parents, their perception of parents’ desire to improve
their involvement in their childrens’ education, the teachers’ perception of using a classroom
website to improve communication and parent involvement in their child’s school, and the
teachers’ comfort level, proficiency with website creation, and the need for PD training
participants in the use of a website creation tool. The results of the survey will be shared with the
teachers. The data gathered will help presenters modify the PD to meet participants’ needs in
creating a website.
Classrooms websites also serve ther needs in the classroom above and beyond being a
communication tool. One is to meet the needs of many students who have IEP and 504 plans.
Having a classroom website provides students with special needs access to notes, clear
instructions, review materials, and specific assignment details.
Weebly Overview. Founded in 2007, Weebly is a San Francisco-based, global platform that
lets people easily create a unique website, blog or online store (Weebly, 2016). Weebly is a web-
hosting service that features a simple drag-and-drop website builder. Weebly conveniently
automatically generates a mobile version of each website. They provide unlimited storage (with
restrictions on individual file sizes).Weebly enables everyone the ability to build quality websites
that work with any platform/any device. Weebly offers a free version that will get the novice
user up and going with a website They also offer a range of pricing options, including enterprise
options (Weebly, 2016).
Standards
“The California Professional Standards for Education Leaders (CPSEL) identify what an
administrator must know and be able to do in order to move into sustainable, effective practice.
They are a set of broad policy standards that are the foundation for administrator preparation,
induction, development, professional learning and evaluation in California. Taken together, the
CPSEL describe critical areas of leadership for administrators and offer a structure for
developing and supporting education leaders throughout their careers” (Commission on Teacher
Credentialing, 2014).
Standard 2: Instructional Leadership. Education leaders shape a collaborative culture of
teaching and learning informed by professional standards and focused on student and
professional growth. Element 2A: Professional Learning Culture Leaders promote a culture
in which staff engages in individual and collective professional learning that results in their
continuous improvement and high performance.
Example Indicators: 2A-1 Establish coherent, research-based professional learning
aligned with organizational vision and goals for educator and student growth.
2A-2 Promote professional learning plans that focus on real situations and specific
needs related to increasing the learning and well-being of all staff and students.
2A-3 Capitalize on the diverse experience and abilities of staff to plan, implement,
and assess professional learning.
2A-4 Strengthen staff trust, shared responsibility, and leadership by instituting
structures and processes that promote collaborative inquiry and problem solving.
Standard 4: Family and Community Engagement. Education leaders collaborate with
families and other stakeholders to address diverse student and community interests and

meaningfully involve all parents and families, including underrepresented communities,
in student learning and support programs.
4A-1 Establish a welcoming environment for family participation end education

collaborative tools to support technology –enhanced curriculum.
Element: 16(c): Each participating teacher uses technological resources available
inside the classroom or in library media centers, computer labs, local and county
facilities, and other locations to create technology-enhanced lessons aligned with
the adopted curriculum.
Element: 16(e): Each participating teacher uses technology in lessons to increase

Goals and Objectives
Goals. Our goal is to provide educators a basic understanding of the creation, application
and effectiveness of Weebly website to facilitate communication and partnering with parents in
their children’s education. Participants will create a sample website including a blog, creating an
example of a classroom website.
Objectives.
Objective 1: Provide attendees the basic steps in creating a Weebly classroom
website and blog. Upon completion, the participants will be able to register a
domain and URL through Weebly, easily create a classroom website and blog,
launch their site, manage their students' accounts, accept homework assignments
online, and keep their students’ parents up to date.
Objective 2: To improve student learning through technology. Digital content
will be available before, during, and after school. Digital content will be
integrated into all instruction as appropriate.

Weebly's free educational blog templates can work as standalone sites or parts of a larger
website. Free educational blog hosting ensures your content loads quickly and remains available
to readers. Educational Blog templates can be fully customized and altered to create a classroom
website & blog, manage your student’s accounts, accept homework assignments online, and keep
parents up to date (Weebly, 2016).

Creating a Blog
1) Go to www.education.weebly.com
2) Click on blog from the blue band above the page
3) Click on ‘Sign up’
4) Enter your Name, desired e-mail associated with the blog, and a desired password and
click ‘Sign Up Free’.
5) After signing in, you will arrive to the following page where you will click ‘Blog’ to
continue.
6) To continue, simply browse the blog theme option and click ‘Choose’ on the desired
option. *You can always change this later.
7) To continue, you must choose a link address where your blog can be accessed from. We
chose a free account with a ‘.weebly.com’ extension link. Make sure to use an ‘Available’
link address that is not already in use or ‘taken’ and click ‘Continue’.
Congratulations! You have created a Weebly Blog. To continue customizing your blog,
view the next tutorial.
Customizing the Blog
1) Notice the ‘Build’ tab above the screen, you may use any of the ‘Elements’ from the left
side of the screen to drag and drop to build your blog.
2) The amount of customization will depend on your personal aesthetic. Just be sure to
keep your layout simple so that students and parents can access your blogs with ease.
3) You can start by changing the Site Title from MY SITE to your desired site name by just
clicking on it.
Adding Entries
To create a Blog Post we will look at the following tutorials from:

1) If you haven’t already created a Blog of your own, go to the Pages tab and click the + to
add a page, then select Blog.
To create a New Post, click on the New Post button at the bottom of your blog page.
2) Your blog post has a title and a content area. The title is like the headline of a
newspaper article, so it should generally be short.
3) You can add content to your post in the same way content is added to a regular page.
Drag elements into the post, and edit them to add content.
4) Once you've added your content you can select a variety of options for this particular
post. Click Post Options.
5) Click Add Categories if you’d like to tag your post. These tagged categories will appear
on your sidebar, making it easier for visitors to your blog to find posts that cover certain
topics. Categories can be whatever you like, or you can forgo them altogether.
6) From here, you can also schedule your post for a later date and time, and turn comments
on or off.
7) When you’re all done, you have a number of options related to publishing and sharing.
8) In the upper right, there are two buttons: Save and Post. Clicking Post immediately
publishes this Post to your website, and clicking Save will create a draft so you can go back
and edit it later.
9) When you click Save, you’ll see a Drafts button is added to the lower right. Clicking
Drafts lets you view all your works in progress to edit and post them when you’re ready.
Congratulations! You have now made your very first blog post in your blog page! To

Managing Entries

1) Most of the time we just have to live and learn from our mistakes. Happily, that's not the
case with blog posts - you can go back into the editor and fix errors in a post even after it's
published.
2) Fixing a post is as easy as finding it and clicking it - you can click anywhere on the body
of a post to open it for editing.
3) Make your changes, then click the Update button - voila! Mistakes corrected!
4) What if you just want to get rid of the entire post? Not a problem - click on the post to
open it for editing.
5) Click the arrow next to the update button to delete the post.
6) You'll be prompted to confirm you really want to delete the post, so please be
cautious because deleted posts can't be restored. If you're sure, go ahead and confirm -
voila! Post banished!
Conclusion and Evaluation
Conclusion
In our faced-paced society, technology is racing ahead at lightning speed. With long
days and daunting tasks of creating lessons plans, grading papers, and trying to make calls to
parents at home, many teachers are left behind with technology. If fact, many teachers are timid
about using technology in the classroom for lack of instruction on how to use the technologies.
Schools should not only provide teacher with technology, but also the support and professional
development to use it.
This workshop was designed to introduce how to create a classroom website and blog
with Weebly, to give some ideas on how they can be used in education to increase
communication between home and school, and how they can help with student success.
Assessment and Evaluation
The assessment and evaluation for Creating a Classroom Website & Blog with Weebly
professional development is well rounded. It elicits not only initial assessment and evaluation,
but provides long-term resources as well. The long term resources enable continuing evaluation
and feedback on how the tool impacts communication between home and school. The long term
resources ultimately contribute feedback on how the tool affects student outcomes.
Initial Assessment. Participants of the professional development work shop will create a
website and blog using Weebly. With verbal feedback and examining work shop products, a
determination can be made as to whether added instruction is necessary for participants to use
Weebly to create a classroom website and blog. Also, at the end of the workshop, participants
will log on to two surveys to rate the workshop as a whole.
Facilitator and Presentation Evaluation. This survey will include questions evaluating
the overall workshop. The answers to the survey will be collected and tabulated. The evaluation
will be anonymous and participants should be asked to answer the questions honestly. The
evaluation survey will be used to improve on future professional developments.
Weebly Survey Questionnaire. This survey will rate Weebly as a website and blog
creation tool to gather participants’ feedback on this particular tool. The answers to the survey
will be collected and tabulated. The evaluation will be anonymous and participants should be
asked to answer the questions honestly. The evaluation survey will be used to determine if
future professional developments should focus on Weebly or other tools.
Long-Term Evaluation. Participants will be given access to the Weebly workshop blog.
This enables participants to have a place to log questions and receive feedback from other users,
and to share experiences and best practices. Updates and new features of the tool can be shared
via the Weebly workshop blog along with assessment of student outcomes.

Best and worst PD: At the front of the class, whether on a projector, a whiteboard, or
within Cafe Learn’s chat feature post: “The best PD I’ve ever had” and underneath it
“What the speaker did” and below that “What the professionals did.” On another
section write, “The worst PD I’ve ever had” and then the same two items beneath.
Ask professionals to share their experiences, without naming the PD, department or
speaker, and begin filling in their responses based on what they call out. They can do
this within Café Learn using the hashtag feature. If there’s a lull or not many
comments about what the professionals did in these PDs, add some descriptors based
on your experience with some of your best and worst PD. In 10 minutes or less, two
very different PD portraits emerge. Move to the best PD section of the board and tell
professionals that this is the PD you want to have, but that you can’t do it alone.
Together you have the power to make this one of those “best PD” experiences.

7) To continue, you must choose a link address where your blog can be accessed from. We
chose a free account with a ‘.weebly.com’ extension link. Make sure to use an ‘Available’
link address that is not already in use or ‘taken’ and click ‘Continue’.
Congratulations! You have created a Weebly Blog. To create your first post follow the next
steps.
Add Your Post:
To create a Blog Post we will look at the following tutorials from:

1) If you haven’t already created a Blog of your own, go to the Pages tab and click the + to
add a page, then select Blog.
To create a New Post, click on the New Post button at the bottom of your blog page.
2) Your blog post has a title and a content area. The title is like the headline of a newspaper
article, so it should generally be short.
3) You can add content to your post in the same way content is added to a regular page.
Drag elements into the post, and edit them to add content.
4) Once you've added your content you can select a variety of options for this particular
post. Click Post Options.
5) Click Add Categories if you’d like to tag your post. These tagged categories will appear
on your sidebar, making it easier for visitors to your blog to find posts that cover certain
topics. Categories can be whatever you like, or you can forgo them altogether.
6) From here, you can also schedule your post for a later date and time, and turn comments
on or off.
7) When you’re all done, you have a number of options related to publishing and sharing.
8) In the upper right, there are two buttons: Save and Post. Clicking Post immediately
publishes this Post to your website, and clicking Save will create a draft so you can go back
and edit it later.
9) When you click Save, you’ll see a Drafts button is added to the lower right. Clicking
Drafts lets you view all your works in progress to edit and post them when you’re ready.
Congratulations! You have now made your very first blog post in your blog page! Be sure
to share it with the rest of the class when the time comes!

Module III Staff Development Ice-Breaker Instructions Handout (2)
Best and worst PD: At the front of the class, whether on a projector, a whiteboard, or
within Cafe Learn’s chat feature post: “The best PD I’ve ever had” and underneath it
“What the speaker did” and below that “What the professionals did.” On another
section write, “The worst PD I’ve ever had” and then the same two items beneath.
Ask professionals to share their experiences, without naming the PD, department or
speaker, and begin filling in their responses based on what they call out. They can do
this within Café Learn using the hashtag feature. If there’s a lull or not many
comments about what the professionals did in these PDs, add some descriptors based
on your experience with some of your best and worst PD. In 10 minutes or less, two
very different PD portraits emerge. Move to the best PD section of the board and tell
professionals that this is the PD you want to have, but that you can’t do it alone.
Together you have the power to make this one of those “best PD” experiences.
