Rainbow Pool is now open!

The US Forest Service partnered with the Yosemite Hwy 120 Chamber of

Commerce to establish a clean up day for one of our treasured recreational areas-Rainbow Pool. The event took place on Saturday March 29th, the

response for volunteers was overwhelming, as many volunteers shared their stories of enjoying Rainbow Pool during their childhood and bringing their children there to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the area.

The team was able to clear the roadway entrance and exit, removed mud and debris from the

restroom and parking lots area (approximately 20 wheel barrels of mud), sanded picnic tables and benches. Sanded the BBQ pits for later painting (heavy rain was in the forecast, but

mother nature provided us with the break we needed to accomplish the objectives set by Dusty Vaughn of the US Forest Service). Limbs hauled up and burn piles were established, logs were cut and hauled up to level ground to be chipped at a later date. Broken parking

stops were replaced, the entire roadway, parking areas, steps leading down to Rainbow Pool were blown off-removing dirt and debris. What a difference a day makes!

We would also like to acknowledge Evergreen Lodge for their generosity-snacks, drinks, and setting up and being in charge of our check in station. Down to Earth Hardware/Pine Mountain

Hardware donated Stain and High Temp spray paint for the BBQ pits to further beautify this wonderful amenity located in our own backyard.

Trout Fest 2014

Trout Fest 2014 was once again an amazing event at Moccasin Creek Hatchery. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife gave kids of all ages a hands-on opportunity, to hone their fishing skills, learn about trout and the local hatchery. Activities included knot tying, rigging, casting, cleaning fish, trout tasting and an end-less amount of Science and Art activities. It was amazing to see the reaction of the kids(and adults) that had never seen or touched a fish.

On Friday, May 2, 2014, the U.S. Dis-trict Court, co-sponsored with the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the Federal Bar Association will hold the second annual Law Day Yosemite in Yosemite Valley, to celebrate the Rule of Law and its contributions to the rights and freedoms all Americans enjoy. The Rule of Law will be specially com-memorated at the foot of majestic Yo-semite Falls. Eighth graders from ten local schools have been invited to par-ticipate in the celebration of the Rule of Law; and approximately 250 stu-dents are expected to attend. This year’s Law Day Yosemite cele-bration will focus on the 150th Anni-versary of the Yosemite Land Grant of 1864, when President Abraham Lin-coln, in the midst of a civil war tearing at the seams of the nation, had the vision to sign the Yosemite Grant Act which established Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove as the first pro-tected wild land to be preserved for all time. The eighth grade students have been invited to enter an essay contest explaining the significance of the Grant Act of 1864 to our country and citizens. Successful essays will ad-dress why legislation was necessary to protect places like Yosemite Valley; what might Yosemite be today without such protections; whether and why national parks are important to Amer-ica and how we might inspire future generations to support the idea born of the Yosemite Grant Act.

Donation Opportunities – 2014 49’er Festival, Chili & Salsa Cook-Off The Yosemite Hwy120 Chamber of Commerce needs your help and support with the Groveland community’s biggest event of the year: the 49’er Festival & Chili Cook-Off. The event, scheduled for September 20, 2014, in Mary Laveroni Community Park, will begin with a pancake breakfast at 7am, followed by a fly-over at 8:30 and a Parade down Main Street at 9:00. Vendor booths for crafts, merchandise and food, as well as activities for all ages, will be set up in the park, plus the booths for the Chili & Salsa Cook-Off. The raffle, silent auction and live auction are always very popular events, and our live entertainment will be an additional draw. We are in need of event sponsors, as well as prize donations for the raffle and auction events. Would your business consider being a sponsor, or donating a prize for the raffle or auctions? A sponsorship of $100 or more would be most welcome. A donation of monetary, gift certificate, prod-uct or service, would be greatly appreciated. Sponsors receive advertising on a variety of flyers, bro-chures, advertisements, press releases, and by other means. All donations will be seen by thou-sands of people, and we try to list all donations on our website too, so this is a really great way to promote your business. Please indicate on the attached form your donation and return it with your donation (if appropriate) to the Yosemite Hwy120 Chamber of Commerce, P.O. box 1263, Groveland, CA 95321. If it’s a product or service, we will contact you to make arrangements to pick up your gift or to discuss details. Business Name:

U.S. Forest Service Stanislaus National Forest 19777 Greenley Road News Release Sonora, CA 95370 Media Contact: Rebecca Garcia Voice: 209-532-3671 209-532-3671 Ext. 244 Web: http://www.fs.usda.gov/stanislaus/ [email protected] Personal Use Fuelwood Season Begins Today Sonora, Calif. (April 1, 2014)… With the U.S. Forest Service Fuelwood Season offi-cially beginning today, Personal Use Fuelwood Permits are now available for purchase at Stanislaus National Forest offices until November 30. The U.S. Forest Service charges $25 for a two-and-a-half-cord permit, with a maximum purchase of 10 cords per household (Permit terms and federal regulations are strictly enforced). Although the Personal Use Fuelwood season begins today, some Forest roads are not scheduled to open until April 15 or later, as weather and road conditions allow. Additionally, the Rim Fire area remains closed to the public; however, there will be access to woodcutting in the closure area for a limited time. When people come in for permits on the Groveland District, they will be directed to gather fuel wood at: Diamond O Campground Middle Fork Day Use Area Carlon Day Use Area Sweetwater Campground Rainbow Pool Day Use Area Lost Claim Campground No other recreation or other use of the campgrounds or day use areas is allowed within the closure area, and no other cutting or gathering of fuel wood along Highway 120 within the Rim Fire area or other closed areas in the Rim Fire area is allowed. Early season fuelwood cutters should plan to stay on the drier Forest roads. As the season continues, un-surfaced roads will gradually dry out, and become less vulnerable to damage. Driving on the drier roads helps to reduce maintenance costs and protects Forest resources. Fuelwood cut-ters are required to review and follow the terms specified on their permit, and to present their valid permit to Forest officers checking for compliance. Each chainsaw must be equipped with an approved, serviceable spark arrestor. A shovel and approved, serviceable fire extinguisher must be readily available at the cutting site. Also, when hauling firewood, the number of the load tags applied to the load must be clearly visible from the rear of the load. The operation of chainsaws and power equipment is permitted only on “permissive woodcutting days,” and is prohibited on “negative woodcutting days” during periods of high fire danger. Be-fore cutting firewood, fuelwood cutters must first call (209) 532-5601 for a pre-recorded message, or check at any open Ranger Station to find out if that day is a “permissive cut day.” Motor vehicle travel and parking is limited to one vehicle length (vehicle and trailer) from National Forest Transportation System routes. Only dead and down material may be taken, and all firewood must be cut less than 6 feet in length prior to hauling. Woodcutters may obtain Personal-Use Fuelwood permits at all Stanislaus National Forest offices. Groveland Ranger Station -Highway 120, east of Groveland (209) 962-7825. Summit Ranger Station -Highway 108, in Pinecrest (209) 965-3434. Calaveras Ranger Station -Highway 4 in Hathaway Pines (209) 795-1381. Mi-Wok Ranger Station -Highway 108 in Mi-Wuk Village (209) 586-3234. Sonora Forest Supervisor's Office -Sonora at 19777 Greenley Rd. (209) 532-3671. The public may obtain Personal Use Fuelwood Permits through the mail. A permit application can be mailed to anyone who contacts a Forest office at the above listed telephone numbers. Additionally, woodcutting In-formation and a permit application is retrievable on the Forest website at http://fs.usda.gov/stanislaus
