Child Labor in Mexico

Nearly 7 out of 10 children receive a kindergarten education. 30 years ago 25% of students were enrolled to go to school. In the year 2000, 14,808,000 kids and 50% of them weren’t eligible to go to school.

Free Time• Researchers found that compared 1981. Children in

1997 spent less time in play and had less free time. • In 1981, they spent 18% more time at school, 145%

more time doing school work, and 168% more time shopping with their parents.

• In 1997, kids spent about 11 hours per week at play.• When the kids have free time, they put themselves in

both physically and socially challenging situations and learn to control the emotions.

Health

• Many children in Mexico face huge health problems.• Due to low economic and social status, poor children are most

likely to face illness and death.• Every thousand live births there are 28 infant death and 34 deaths

for kids under the age of 5.• This counts to 79,000 deaths of children annually. • 14% of children are underweight, with 7% having low birth weights.• There are tons of difference in the quality and efficiency of health

care for men and female, especially among poor children.• One government has attempted to provide 100% financing of

vaccinations for children.• Because of that aid, more than 90% of children under 1 have been

vaccinated for measles and polio.

Economy• Population: 113.7 million people• Life expectancy: 76 years of age• Population ages 0-14: 29.1%• Under-5 mortality rate: 17%• The average amount of people living in one house is 7 to 10

people.• Villages are often poor and have little education for the

children.• President: Enrique Pena Nieto.• An average household can spend 10,198 pesos ($871) in

one month. That is a lot of money for a poor family.

Work• Kids work an average of 6 hours before and

after school.• Kids work all year round, or during the harvest

period. Very few kids go to school.• Even though earning a salary for their parents

are important, to them school is just another expense.

• Around 3.5 million children work as servants, or carrying wood and cement.

• Kids get exploited because they are underpaid. Compared to an adult doing the same job, the adult gets more money.

• If they work in difficult conditions there health is put in danger.

• Kids work to cover their basic needs and have to stop their studies. They work very long hours. Due to poor labors they are put at risk.

Sponsored Children• Nearly 15,000 poor children and youth are sponsored.• Sponsored children get assistance like receive free medical

and dental care, nutritional support, educational assistance, family aid, clothing, etc.
