Dear Customers, Ladies and Gentlemen,

our journal is celebrating a significant birthday: It's the 10th edition of By Wire you're holding in your hands. Once a year since 2010, we have informed you on our company’s news, especially about the innovations and products invented and developed in-house. Much has happened during the past decade. We were pleased to have you participate.

We presented several of the miunske developments in nine issues of By Wire. In this anniversary issue we want to take the opportunity to recall the highlights. We naturally also focus on the future. We are always pleased when we acquire new customers and are able to instil them with enthusiasm for our services. Like KGS Keller Geräte & Service GmbH, which produces specialist machines for civil engineering. KGS selected a miunske keyboard for its newly developed deep vibrator and is completely satisfied.

We work continuously to accommodate our customers’ requirements and needs as best we can. For example, the restructuring of our logistics is a further step in this direction. In future, sales and logistics will be even better interlinked, the processes optimally coordinated. Our new head of department, who has contributed his ideas and experience to miunske since November 2018, explains how we will achieve this.

On behalf of all miunske employees, I hope you enjoy your read

Yours Katrin M. Miunske,Managing Director, miunske GmbH

MIUNSKE DEVELOPMENTS A LOOK BACK ON 9 YEARS

Yes, we can – Yes, you can was the motto as miunske presented its CAN-compatible modules in the form of affordable, decen-tralised solutions. They enable existing CAN environments to be extended quickly and easily. Since then, newcomers to the CAN world have found complete, cost-effective CAN solutions at miunske.

Police authority drives well with miunske, because the Baumei-ster & Trabandt company decided to work with the system sup-plier. They had an order to customise 51 special vehicles of a police authority. miunske® convinced the vehicle-customisation-specialists with its individual adaptation options and short implementation period.

“Rescue and extinguish with high-performance printed boards from miunske” was the title of an article describing the supply of components for the central electrics in firefighting and rescue service vehicles. Albert Ziegler GmbH & Co. KG, a leading inter-national supplier of firefighting technology, changed its control concept to CAN. miunske® supplied the printed boards for the central electrics, which form the heart of the whole system. Despite their high performance, they can be manufactured cost-effectively using soldering technology.

CAN systems from miunske in rescue operations. B.A.U.S. AT, one of the world’s leading producers of ambulances and medical vehicles, uses CAN bus keyboards and modules made by miunske. They are easy to operate and provide an outstanding solution for controlling the complex functions on board. The components were especially developed for commercial vehicles, are modular and freely configurable.

Over the years, the miunske development department has produced numerous innovations, both large and small. New products and solutions that we developed for our customers, and, in most cases, in close collaboration with them. We reported on our most important projects in nine issues of By Wire. In our tenth journal we take a brief look back:

Sound diversity with Multi-Sound-Module now also in commer-cial vehicles. Each vehicle driver knows how important the diffe-rent signals are, which indicate hazards and warn of problems. With the Multi-Sound-Module developed by miunske, each acoustic message can be identified and clearly assigned immedi-ately. Weiss Mobiltechnik GmbH produces prototypes of com-mercial vehicles and installed the new development in a driver’s cab for the first time ever.

Above the clouds with miunske, but above all, landing again safely is achieved by the exclusive power gliders of Stemme AG. The company, based in the Brandenburg town of Strausberg, produces ultra-modern sports planes, in which a powerful drive is combined with outstanding gliding properties. miunske® rea-lized the electromechanical control completely in semiconductor technology.

Control unit for mowing vehicles with miunske technology – the development period up to the pilot series was only six months. Gerhard Dücker GmbH is specialised in mowing vehicles for road verges. It worked successfully with miunske to further develop an electro-hydraulic control for mowing outriggers.

Reliably supplied, not only in an emergency. miunske® also deve-loped a power distributor for a box-body medical vehicle, the latest model of Ambulanz Mobile & Co. KG, in an extremely short time. In addition to all fuses and fuse holders, space for the main battery switch also had to be found in the new component. After only eight weeks, miunske was able to deliver a prototype and after six months the product was ready for series produc-tion.

Electromobility prospects – the young Dutch company Specs E-Mobility B.V. wants to use them to introduce electric scooters on Europe’s roads. Its first product is an e-scooter for inner-city transport. miunske® is also involved in this project, with a CAN module that fulfils very specific requirements.

Whether housing, a factory building or a wind turbine – each structure needs firm, load-bearing soil. If the ground does not fulfil the necessary requirements, soil improvement is necessary. In the Baden town of Renchen, not far from Strasbourg, KGS Keller Geräte & Service GmbH produces special equipment used to improve the ground. The latest product produced in 2018 was the Vibrocat VC05-2 tracked vibrator, a complete upgrade of the previous model. It is controlled using a CANopen keyboard from miunske. By Wire asked Felix Vierneisel, project manager at KGS Keller Geräte & Service GmbH, what a vibrocat must do and how miunske came into play.

By Wire: Your company is a subsidiary of the Keller Group. What sets the group apart and what part does KGS play?Felix Vierneisel: Keller is specialised in ground-works and is involved in construction projects throughout the world. Our focus is on soil improvement, to create a stable subsoil for structures. To do this, in most cases it is neces-sary to go deep, either by drilling or by vibrating. By the way, ground improvement using a depth vibrator is a Keller invention from the 1930s. And now to KGS: We develop, produce and repair spe-cial machines which are used to improve the ground – exclusively for Keller Group companies. The equipment is tailor-made for our colleagues in the construction sector.

By Wire: What type of equipment is it?Felix Vierneisel: Our machines are divided into two groups: Drilling equipment for special civil engineering and vibrocats for vibration projects. We produce different types of each in small series. Our new development, the Vibrocat VC05-2 tracked vibrator is designed for the vibrating-tamping method. It involves installing load-supporting pillars of gravel or crushed rock in certain non-compactable soil types. The tubular depth vibrator penetrates the ground by means of vibration, the coarse-grained feed material is added from above through the pipe and is compacted at the vibrator tip.

By Wire: You have been building these vibrators for a long time. Why redevelop them now?Felix Vierneisel: All our products are developed further continuously. The machine concerned has already been in service for several years. It was time to upgrade. We completely redesigned the vibrocat – from its outer construction through to digitalisation of the controls. We naturally also thought about the operating concept. It should be innovative and easy, ergonomic, clear and intuitive for the driver to understand.

„WE WERE ABLE TO SEE FROM AFAR THAT THE KEYBOARDS ARE CHARACTERISED BY THEIR PARTICULAR BRIGHTNESS."

By Wire: You decided for the CANopen keyboard from miunske. Did you already know the company?Felix Vierneisel: We didn’t discover miunske until last year. At SPS IPC Drives in Nuremberg we were specifically looking for a keyboard that fulfils all our requirements. We noticed the miunske stand. We were able to see from afar that the keyboards are characterised by their particular brightness. That tipped the scales and convinced us straight away.

By Wire: Why is brightness so important?Felix Vierneisel: Our machines run around the clock. It is important that the displays are clear and easily identifiable at any time of the day and night and in different light conditions. Coloured fields must be clearly distinguishable even in the sun, for example, when danger is signalled by illuminating a field in red. The tactility of the miunske keyboard was also right. A positive pressure point was another important criterion for us.

„THE ICONS ON THE KEYBOARD WERE DESIGNED TO OUR WISHES."

By Wire: You chose the miunske standard model CANopen with encoder, adapted to your specifications.Felix Vierneisel: The icons on the keyboard were designed to our wishes. We also need a special cable. miunske® fulfilled this special request too without any problems. We are not yet using the built-in encoder. It is intended as an option for the future. We basically try to limit the operator controls to the fewest possible elements. As soon as important functions are added, the enco-der can be activated and programmed easily. This gives the driver the opportunity to interact with the machine on another level.

„THE SUPPORT IS ALSO EXCELLENT. WE ALWAYS RECEIVED HELP WHENEVER WE NEEDED IT."

By Wire: The project was implemented very quickly. What was the cooperation like with miunske? Felix Vierneisel: Everything ran completely smoothly, from start to finish, with very good communication and very fast delivery. It is particularly positive to mention that miunske reacts quickly even with small quantities. Other

suppliers often won’t lift a finger for an order for 10 or 20 parts. The support is also excellent. We always received help whenever we needed it.

By Wire: The prototype of the new Vibrocat VC05-2 machine is already in use in Leipzig. Are more vehicles of this type due to be built?Felix Vierneisel: There are around 50 old-model machines in existence. In the long-term, a similar number of the new version will be required. We are currently working on the body of the second machine of this type and will then start series production. The third machine is scheduled for completion this year. All other machines will naturally also be equipped with the miunske keyboard. Following our positive experience to date, we can definitely see ourselves using miunske components for other new develop-ments in the future.

Modern fire service vehicles and those of other emergency services offer an increasing variety of equipment and technical options. The vehicle electrics and control engineering must be adapted to these. The relevant parameters can be set and adjusted easily and flexibly at any time using the FlexGUI user interface. Brandschutz-technik Görlitz GmbH, a specialist for the fitout and body of pump and special vehicles, has been using the miunske tool for over a year – and is very impressed.

“No two vehicles are identical”, said Friedrich Neu of Brandschutztechnik Görlitz (BTG). “Our customers can choose from a large number of technical options, even for the standard model. We then concentrate fully on their wishes.” Clarity, functionality and easy operation are the priority for the Görlitz company. The complex electrics are controlled by CAN modules from miunske.

The two East-Saxony firms have been working together closely for many years. miunske® not only supplies electrical parts for the vehicle engineering as well as CAN keyboards and I/O modules, but also carries out all control and operation developments for BTG.

ADJUSTMENTS DIRECTLY ON THE VEHICLE

Whether blue light, siren or various lighting– according to Friedrich Neu, up to 110 emergency vehicle functions must be integrated and assigned in the CAN communications, keyboards must be assigned functions and indicator lamps. BTG employees parameterise and configure the electronic components with the help of the miunske toolchain software. However, after the initial startup of the modules at the PC, changes or special adjustments are often required. This can now be done quickly and easily, even directly in the vehicle, using the FlexGUI parameterisa-tion interface integrated into toolchain.

“BTG is one of the first users of this tool develo-ped by miunske in 2018”, explained Friedrich Neu. “We use it to subsequently activate or further specialise special signalling and lighting compon-ents. For example, the “scene lighting” function has three subfunctions, which we can define easily using FlexGUI. Our employee simply connects a notebook to the vehicle using the graphic interface to select the relevant parame-ters with a click of the mouse.” Such adjustments used to be far more complicated and time-consu-ming due to the encrypted data. Friedrich Neu concludes: “FlexGUI really is an improvement and helps us to respond to customer wishes flexibly.”

A professional external look often produces unexpected new findings. This assumption has also been confirmed at miunske during the past months since Mario Krautschick took over as head of the sales & logistics department. The experienced logistician started the job in November of 2018, to use his ideas and experience to restructure the department and to coordinate all workflows in the best way possible.

For many customers, miunske stocks the products they need at any one time. The purchasers therefore, not only value the competent advice they receive, but also the extensive stock of the system supplier, which enables fast and flexible delivery. But a large warehouse alone is not enough to respond quickly. Smooth order processing stands and falls with the logistics and its close link to sales. And this is where miunske wants to become even better.

Impartial but critical, the new head of department is taking a close look at internal processes. The objective is to identify potential, where and how existing capacities can be used better. Mario Krautschick had sufficient insight to see that this potential exists in many places.

By Wire: Two departments – one manager. Why do you think that sales and logistics belong so closely together?Mario Krautschick: Logistics is the service provider for sales. The two should be optimally coordinated with each other. It’s therefore an advantage if one person is responsible for their management.

„THE ENTIRE LOGISTICS STRUCTURE IS BEING EXAMINED."

By Wire: You want to restructure the logistics at miunske. How will you do this and how far have you got?Mario Krautschick: We are currently still taking stock of the situation. The entire logistics structure is being examined – from the incoming goods to the stocking and communication channels through to the – often customised – packaging. Only then will we tackle the restructuring.

By Wire: Have you already identified potential improvements?Mario Krautschick: The incoming goods and transport routes can be further optimised, as well as the storage area. Above all, the aim will be to make the entire system leaner. For example, by reducing interfaces, we can streamline order processing and make it more effective. This will

free up personnel resources, which in view of increasing customer demand, can be better employed elsewhere.

„THE IMPLEMENTATION WILL TAKE PLACE GRADUALLY DURING THE COMING YEAR."

By Wire: When will this all happen? Mario Krautschick: The implementation will take place gradually during the coming year. We will then also introduce a new stock management system with new technology. This improves, for example, the necessary tracking of each individual part to the manufacturer and supplier. On the other hand, a track and trace system for tracking consignments is already in use.

By Wire: How do customers benefit from the changes? Mario Krautschick: The improved logistics will make us faster and more flexible. We also want to further expand our assortment and stock even more products, which we can then deliver to our customers at short notice and with pinpoint precision.

Mario Krautschick (42) studied business management and transport logistics and brings 19 years’ experience in the logistics sector with him. He has been the head of the sales & logistics department of miunske since November 2018.

MIUNSKE TRAINEE WINS INNOVATION AWARD Last December, miunske apprentice Toni Bürger was named “Most innovative apprentice 2018”. He is in the 3rd year of his vocational training as an IT specialist for application development. The Bautzen Society for the Promotion of Technology awarded him the prize for developing software for graphic program development in automation engineering, which is used at miunske under the name mLogic.

With the tool developed by Toni Bürger, the specialists can implement electronic machine and vehicle functions for the development of new vehicle concepts without needing special pro-gramming knowledge. "This increases flexibility for our customers, especially for handling CAN com-ponents", said Sebastian Müller, electronics development team leader at miunske. mLogic also lightens the workload of the development department so that resources are made available for the development of new innovative products.

mLogic consists of two components: the Firmware on the device (vehicle component) and the Windows application for the PC. The PC tool is a graphic user interface with which users can create and test logic links intuitively by drag & drop and can transfer them to electronic components such as I/O modules.

ADVANTAGES OF mLogic

• easy use without programming knowledge• faster development, simple test options• easy debugging possible• indication of the switching behaviour of the inputs and outputs in mLogic• no hardware-specific constraints• no specific PC system requirements• no expensive Hw-specific compiler necessary

We will make this graphic programming interface available to our customers in future as freeware. We also plan to further develop the software so that in future it can be used not only for individual components but also for developing, programming and implementing whole networks. Toni Bürger, who is already an employee of miunske's develop-ment department, is still in charge of this project.

A new optical measuring microscope complements the modern technology in the quality control department.

The new recently commissioned device can be used to measure surfaces in all three axes with an accuracy within 1000th of a millimetre. The combination of camera and 3-D view enables precise measurement of films, printed boards and other workpieces up to a size of 40 x 30 cm and a height of 8 cm. Single frame images and a test or inspection record document the results.

INVESTMENT IN QUALITY ASSURANCE

Such measurements are indispensable at miunske, especially in the quality assurance and product development departments. Among other things, assembly-relevant tolerances on printed boards are checked with the greatest possible precision. For example, as press-in bolts for the power supply are not installed until the final operation, the holes provided for them must fit precisely.

As a system supplier for vehicle electrics and electronics, miunske® GmbH repeatedly develops products and solutions that increase the level of innovation of commercial vehicles and mobile machines. It also contributes to making everyday work more effective, safer and more convenient.

The virtual device consists of a CAN WLAN Interface and an app and provides a user-friendly solution for manufacturer-independent control and monitoring of machines. The development of the virtual device is primarily aimed at the numerous producers of attachments, whose operation is autonomous, as their use is independent of the tractor manufacturer. It enables these manu-facturers to quickly, flexibly and cost-effectively create a completely new individual and application-specific mobile control and monitoring device. The isolated integration of control and display

elements for additional special functions is very time-consuming and expensive in series produc-tion. Remote controls for functional control outside the cab entail risks, such as loss or functional failure due to low battery charge. On the other hand, use of a smartphone or tablet and its apps is not only a standard practice in private use but is also increasingly prevalent in business. The app’s keymap file can be used to provide several parameter sets for different applications. The virtual device can therefore be used to operate very different devices and functions. This provides the convenience for the user of being able to use different machines and/or applications with only one app. At the moment, practical tests of the beta version of the app are running. The virtual device will be fully available in November 2019 for Agritechnica and SPS.
