BALTIC YOUTH PHILHARMONIC 2012▸ Notes on the Programme
Initiator Co-Initiator & Main Sponsor
W e are delighted to present to you the $fth season of BYP. This orchestra, initia-
ted in 2008 by Nord Stream AG and the Usedom Music Festival, contin-ues to accomplish its challenging goals, uniting music students from all of the Baltic Sea States and giving them the opportunity to live, learn and perform together.
How quickly they overcome these challenges, growing together to cre-ate a New Voice in the North, became obvious in each of the concerts that made up the orchestra’s 2012 season.
Over 500 young musicians audi-tioned in Berlin, Copenhagen, Vil-nius, Tallinn and St. Petersburg this year, and about 100 were selected for participation. The concerts in the en-tire Baltic region were conducted by the orchestra’s founding conductor and musical director, Kristjan Järvi. But as well as by Kurt Masur who held a conducting master class in Peenemünde.
The educational aspects of BYP were supplemented by a compos-ers’ workshop led by Daniel Schny-der, o%ering young composers the chance to work closely with the or-chestra, its conductor and coaches. Once more, BYP made its tour through the Baltic Sea region, com-ing home to the island of Usedom to perform again at Kraftwerk Pee-nemünde.
We are proud that the orches-tra has grown so much since 2008 and is ful$lling the great promise of its beginnings. We are also delighted to welcome Saipem as sponsor of the 2012 tour, whose support has al-lowed the orchestra to travel to Italy.
Our vision is to turn this orches-tra into an educational hub for the entire region and to use it as the ba-sis for the creation of a Baltic Music Education System.
But for the time being we wish you an inspiring time while discov-ering the facets of BYP on this CD and DVD.

KRISTJAN JÄRVI ▸ Founding Conductor & Music Director
»I give them a lot, but if I just give my energy into a black hole, it sucks me dry. But if the energy comes back, then it starts going back and forth; it becomes this synergy. When that happens … whoa! Once you start communicating on this much higher level than words, then you start get-ting an unbelievable excitement in the audience, because they start to see that this is actually a higher form of communication, of emotions, spirituality and love – and only music can do this.« Kristjan Järvi on BYP
Kristjan Järvi has worked with many of the most esteemed com-posers of our time, and has com-missioned and collaborated with diverse artists including Arvo Pärt, Tan Dun, John Adams, Esa-Pekka Salonen, H.K Gruber, Renee Fle-ming, Joe Zawinul, Goran Bregovic, Paquito d’Rivera, Eitetsu Hayashi, Marcel Khalife and Benny Anderson.
Founded in 2008, Baltic Youth Phil-harmonic has quickly been embraced by the international community as both an important education body
and a symbol of peace and unity in a previously volatile region. As found-ing conductor, Kristjan Järvi has led the ensemble on tours throughout Europe and secured signi$cant sup-port through a board of trustees that includes former German chan-cellor Schröder, Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Marek Janowski and Mariss Jansons. BYP has become a vibrant hub for edu-cation and performance, musically uniting students across the region. In addition to his work with BYP he has founded the Absolute Academy at the Bremen University for Music and Arts and the Muusikaselts Music education project in remote Estonian orphanages (now a national initia-tive). He has worked with dozens of youth organizations and in 2011 was a judge at the $rst Beijing Interna-tional Composers’ Competition in China.
Kristjan Järvi was born in Tallinn, Estonia. He emigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in New York City. He is an accomplished pia-nist and graduated from Manhattan School of Music as a performance major followed by undertaking con-ducting studies at the University of Michigan. He began his career as Assistant Conductor to Esa-Pekka Salonen at the Los Angeles Philhar-monic.

His compositions appeal to a young audience and are always a »Gesamtkunstwerk«, focusing on conceptual music in combination with experimental or theatrical stage productions, sometimes in the direct involvement of the audience.www.niko.lt
»When I $rst heard Gediminas Gelgotas‘ music last year, I was completely blown away! His music is fantastic and the whole concept of performing it is incredibly original. That kind of musical entre-preneurism has to be supported for its willingness and passionate energy.«Kristjan Järvi
»The new composition by the Lithuanian composer Gediminas Gelgotas caused a sensation!« Neue Musikzeitung, August 2012
NOTES

▸ The Orchestra
T he home base of BYP is the Baltic Island of Usedom. Here the idea of the joint initiative by the Usedom
Music Festival, its Artistic Director Thomas Hummel and Nord Stream AG was born in 2008. Located on the German-Polish border, the fes-tival has been presenting the music of the Baltic Sea region. Every year in the autumn, the Usedom Music Fes-tival celebrates the cultural diversity, but also the common heritage of the Baltic Sea States.
It has become a cultural highly re-spected podium of the Baltic Sea. Ac-cording to the Financial Times it be-longs »to the most important dates in the German music calendar«. It seeks to promote musical exchange and international understanding.
Thus, it has presented the musi-cal life of Russia, Poland, the Baltic States, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Conductors and soloists such as Mstislav Rostrop-ovich, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Alan Gil-bert, Neeme Järvi, Gidon Kremer,
Olli Mustonen, Nina Stemme, Bo Skovhus as well as Jan Garbarek and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio enthralled their audiences.
The »Peenemünde Concerts«, fre-quently featuring the NDR Symphony Orchestra, are among the highlights of the more than 40 events present-ed by the Festival each year. The se-ries began in 2002 when Mstislav Rostropovich conducted Benjamin Britten’s »War Requiem« at this for-mer Nazi rocket testing compound, a signal for peace and reconciliation. The »Peenemünde Concerts« have been attended by such prominent guests as HRH Queen Silvia of Swe-den, HRH Prince Henrik of Den-mark, Mikhail Gorbachev, the Prime Minister of Latvia Valdis Dombrovs-kis and the Presidents of Germany Johannes Rau and Horst Köhler.
In 2013 the musical and cultural life of Estonia will be the focus of the Usedom Music Festival.
