Next Week All Students Return to School Finally, all students can return to school next week. The teachers are very excited about this news and are looking forward to having their whole class back again. Classes will resume as normal with enhanced hygiene practices in place. All students are expected to return in a full time capacity. Rolls will be marked as per normal. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone. Assemblies and school excursions have yet to be approved. The school will no longer be providing home learning via Google classroom or packages of work. A BIG thank you to our amazing families who have supported their children and encouraged them to engage with learning from home through the resources provided by the school. We are most grateful for your support. We know that it hasnt been easy, that there were challenges and obstacles to overcome. With your support, learning has continued for our students. Excited, Happy Children Return to School During the last week, we have welcomed most of our students back to the school for a day, with the large majority of children attending on their allocated day at school. It was hard to tell who was more excited – the students or the teachers! It is lovely to hear lots of laughter fill the classrooms and playgrounds once again. I was amazed by how happy all the children appeared to be and how they seemed to have not just survived isolation, but thrived in it! There were a few that were a bit anxious about coming back but they settled in quickly and had a good day. It feels like we are starting to get back to normal’. Teaching and Learning Staff have been incredible during this time. They have gone from face to face learning to online/workpacks with very little time to prepare. In addition, they have provided supervision and support for the children who have needed to attend school during this time. I would like to acknowledge the incredible work they have been doing to keep children learning during uncertain times. This week, teachers are continuing to monitor and provide feedback in Google Classrooms and check workpack samples which are being sent to school. However, due to the demands for planning, supporting and supervising the increasing number of students at school, it is not realistic to expect teachers to provide feedback on every piece of completed work. Be sure to post questions in the Google Classroom, or email/phone the school if you would like a teacher to address or assist with a particular learning issue. Student numbers are more than anticipated and staff are now spending most of the week teaching face to face lessons here at school. They are doing their best to manage this along with preparing home learning and managing Google Classrooms. Some students have made good progress whilst participating in home learning, others have not provided us with any evidence of their learning, including the required work samples necessary to make the judgement call on their progress to date. School Laptops If you have borrowed a laptop from school, please return it to school next week. Students are asked to return the laptops to the STEM room which is located between the technology room and Mrs Whitneys room on the bottom floor in the new building. Week 5 Monday 25 May • All Students Return to

School Tuesday 26 May • National Sorry Day

Wednesday 27 May - 3 June • National Reconciliation Week

Amazing Artwork Year 1 this week have been studying the French artist Henry Matisse after reading the book ‘When Pigcasso met Mootisee’. Students used bright texta pens to produce these brilliant artworks.

Year 6 students were very excited to receive their Year 6 2020 school shirts. Pictured are Lia and Sienna looking very smart in their shirts.

the power cord, charger, mouse and mouse pad if you were provided with one. Additionally, if there were any issues with the laptop, please put this on a note/post it note and stick to the laptop. Students are asked to sign out and shut down the laptop before it is returned. When students are returning their laptop, they will need to get their name marked off our borrowing list. Laptops can be returned before class commences or at 3.15pm in the afternoon.

Canteen The school canteen will reopen next week with a very simplified, limited menu. We ask that all orders are placed online using Flexischools, as no money is being accepted over the counter. More news about the canteen will be sent out via School Stream later on in the week.

Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Student Surveys Information went home last week about the ‘Tell Them From Me’ student surveys, along with a link to the survey site and passwords for each student to use. I encourage all students in Years 4, 5 and 6 to take the time to complete the survey. As a parent, you might be interested in sitting with your child/ren as they complete the survey. When completed at school, staff walk through the survey with them to ensure they know what the question is asking of them. I encourage parents to do the same at home. The survey window has been extended until Friday 19 June and we would be most grateful if students could complete these at home.

Wellbeing at School We will continue to enforce sensible hygiene practices at school, including regular handwashing/sanitising and enhanced cleaning procedures. If your child is in Kindergarten, Year 1 or Year 2 and is feeling anxious about returning to school next week, we have established a designated drop off and collection gate where familiar staff and senior students will meet them and assist with their transition back to school. If this is the case, please use the gate near the library end of Carlyle St, near the Middleton St corner. As always, please be sure to keep children at home if they are unwell. We look forward to a successful return to school for all of our students come Monday 25 May.

Parents We are asking parents to not enter school grounds and to kiss and drop the children off outside the school gate. The same applies at pick up time. This has come from the Department of Education as the COVID-19 virus is more readily spread by adults, not children. Staff are on duty at each gate in the morning and afternoon. If you are using Kingsley St as a drop off and pick up point, we ask that you please refrain from using the small front gate in Kingsley St which the bus lines use, instead please use the double gates at the entry way to the new building or the gate near Middleton St. If you are collecting your child/ren, they will only be able to leave the school grounds if you are in line of sight. Please make sure that your child/ren know which gate you will be collecting them from. After drop off time, all gates will be locked except for the gate at the entry way to the office. The gates will be unlocked at dismissal time. If you need to collect children early, please phone ahead and let the office know. They will organise for your child/ren to be sent to the office for collection. Please practice social distancing when dropping off and collecting children. Parents are urged, where possible, to kiss and drop off the children. I will let you know when parents are allowed back on site.

Skateboarders and Vandalism At least once a week, youths climb the fence and illegally enter onto our site, usually after 5.00 pm. They skateboard in the entryway to our new building, leaving marks on the cement and seating. The Police have been called/notified but the offenders leave before they arrive. If you see them, please notify the Police as they are damaging our property and should not be on site. Until next time, Linda Trigg Principal

Year 2 Scavenger Hunt Year 2 students at school had fun looking for items in a scavenger hunt. They needed to find a selection of items to complete their hunt. It was interesting trying to find these objects around the school grounds. At the same time other Year 2 students were on the same hunt in their own backyards.

Creative things from home Roy from 1A created a mobile phone holder from the ‘take a break’ activity slideshow encouraging students to have a break from technology.

School Uniform All students need to be in full school uniform on return to school next week. Please ensure your child/ren wear the correct uniform. If girls are wearing tights they must be navy in colour. Also, students must have a hat and enclosed shoes.

Library News

If your child/ren have a library book at home on loan and is attending school, please send library books back to be returned. Students can place them in the “Returns Box” located outside the library.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour. PBL is a process that supports school teams to create positive learning environments that enable student learning and wellbeing. PBL brings together the whole-school community to contribute to developing a positive, safe and supportive learning culture. The framework assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people. Here at Byron Bay Public School, we have been implementing PBL for a number of years. Each year a plan is developed using information gained from a set auditing tool. The plan identifies key areas that we need to work on to improve the effectiveness of PBL. We have a dedicated PBL committee, comprising of stage teacher representatives as well as two parent representatives. This committee meets every second Wednesday morning. This year, the committee members are Ms Lennon, Mrs Woodrow, Mrs Kneipp, Ms Azzopardi, Miss Paron, Miss Stanton-Gillan, Julia Green (parent) and Vicky Liddle (parent). We have 3 key values - Respect, Responsible and Fair. We have also identified key areas around the school and they all now have professional signage to help remind students of expected behaviours. The key areas are the hall, COLA, library, canteen and playgrounds. The P&C helped to fund the PBL signage along with the SRC and school. Student voice is an important part of PBL. We have been increasing student voice in the area of PBL over the past couple of years. This is oc-curring through PBL being on SRC meet-ing agendas, SRC yellow ticket bags for SRC to give out yellow tickets before school and SRC members

Term 2 Week 5 - no volunteers will be rostered on

Details regarding the Canteen reopening will be sent out at the end of this week via

Schoolstream. Please note, there will be a limited menu available. Sign up at www.flexischools.com.au to place your orders. Orders need to placed before 9.15am. We recommend placing your child’s lunch order the night before. Additionally, the canteen will not be handling any money until further notice. In the event that you are unable to place an online order, please send your child/ren to school with food in their bags. Thank you.

Well done to everyone who has been completing the PBL lesson on Google Classrooms and in the work pack about 'Being Fair to myself and my family: Learning from home'. It has been wonderful

to hear our students being responsible for their learning, helping out at home and showing kindness. We have heard about people baking treats for their family, helping to cook dinner and sharing with their siblings. Keep up the great work!

Year 3 students were given a sizzling start focusing on a mouse which could not believe its eyes...Leila took it from there. Well done Leila! Fantastic imaginative writing!

The Ginormous Seed! Slowly and cautiously, he raised his small, curious face above the ground, just as he did every morning. His shiny black eyes surveyed the scene in front and around him, checking that the coast was clear for the start of the breakfast expedition. Suddenly, he saw it … sitting there right in front of him. His eyes widened, transfixed on the sight he saw in front of him and his jaw dropped open in astonishment. Was it really there? Were his eyes playing tricks on him? Abruptly, he awoke, as if he had been caught in a dream. Twitching his whiskers, he realized that he had to act NOW, or he was to miss his chance… It was a ginormous seed, but then he looked past the seed and saw 10 other hamsters running towards it. He thought he would never get to it first, then he realised that his burrow was closest to the seed so he had an advantage. He scuttled out of his burrow as fast as he could. Just as he got to it, two other hamsters got there too and sunk their teeth into it. The hamster bit the other two on the bottom and they screamed with pain and let go of the seed. He grabbed it and pushed it quickly towards his burrow. When he got there he realised that it was too big to fit down! He jumped up and down on the seed until it went down the hole. Once it was safe he chewed it into smaller pieces and shared it with his hamster wife and babies. They had seed for weeks! Seeds for breakfast, seeds for lunch and seeds for dinner. The hamster family got sick of seeds and started to look for grains. Then one day they found a ginormous grain! But that is another story... By Leila Pearson 3M

Kindergarten students read the story “The Potato People” and designed their own potato person. Here is Frankie KE and Fender from KD with their wonderful creations.

Lost Property - is your child missing their glasses? If you child has lost their prescription glasses, please see the ladies in the front office. They have been in lost property for quite some time.
