bz jones hike 2012 - newport harbor yacht club
TRANSCRIPT
The Hike
Spring is the best time to hike Catalina, presenting mild temperatures,
a green island, and many native species in bloom. This 12 mile beach‐
to‐beach hike utilizes unmarked trails, single track, and service roads
to reach 1700 feet of elevation at Blackjack Camp, followed by a similar
combination of trails for the decent into White’s Landing. The hike
has three distinct four‐mile legs: Ben Weston to Bosky Dell (gradual
up and down;) Bosky Dell to Blackjack Camp (gradual first two miles,
steep last two miles;) and Blackjack Camp to White’s Landing
(moderate to steep downhill.)
The hike is based out of Avalon. At 0630 Saturday morning, buses will
take hikers across the Island to the bluff above Ben Weston Beach.
Hikers will work down to the beach, and begin with a walk up Ben
Weston Canyon, continuing on to the ridge above Torqua caves and
then descend toward historic Bosque Dell. After a rest and regroup at
Bosque Dell, the next four miles to Blackjack Campground starts as a
gradual uphill trek and turns into a series of steep hills as most of the
elevation is gained. Upon arriving at Blackjack camp, a BBQ lunch
will be served under the pines, and the hikers will be joined by hike
supporters who elected to tour by bus rather than foot. After lunch,
hikers will depart for the four miles to White’s cove, almost all of it
downhill with spectacular views. Hikers will be taken from White’s
beach to Avalon by boat, arriving by 5pm. A hike celebration dinner
will be held at the “M” restaurant in Avalon.
BZ Jones Cross Catalina Hike
A spring hike across Catalina’s widest section from Ben Weston

historic Eagle’s Nest lodge at Middle Ranch, Catalina. A $50 tax
deductible donation towards the restoration is included in the fee for
each hiker . BZ’s name will be suitably displayed at the restored Eagle’s
Nest lodge.
Forget trudging uphill for miles and take the tour! It’s what BZ would do.
Departing Avalon at 0800, your Island coach will get you out of Avalon
and on top of the island in short order. First stop is an up close visit with
“Pimu” who lives at the Catalina Island Eagle Sanctuary. A little further
down the road you will visit Middle Ranch, home of Tachi the Island Fox ambas‐
sador. You’ll visit the native plant nursery, and get a tour and update on the Eagle’s Nest Lodge restoration
project.
The tour will continue on to Rancho Escondido, and a visit to the new vineyards recently established by
Geoff and Alison Rusack. From the Vineyards, it’s 1600 feet uphill for a short visit to Catalina’s “airport in
the sky” to check out the visiting aircraft and historic
airport facility before continuing on to meet the hikers
for lunch at Blackjack Camp.

Logistics
The hike can be done in athletic shoes/cross trainers, but light hiking
boots with ankle support are recommended. Thick socks and short toe‐
nails will reduce foot chaffing, especially downhill
Small daypacks for carrying layers, snacks, water, sunscreen, camera,
etc., are a good idea. However, this hike is easily done without a pack,
carrying bottled water and an upper clothing layer around your waist.
Normally shorts are fine. But long pants will protect against sun and brush. A light, long sleeve, high collared sun/breathable shirt works well.
A wide brimmed hat is recommended. Note: Water (16 oz bottles) and snacks/food will be available at the end of each four mile section.
Clothing & Footwear
Bosky Dell, Old Wrigley hunting and BBQ
outstation, and the rest stop
between the first and second legs of the hike.
Post Hike dinner Saturday evening at Avalon’s “M” restaurant.
Included in hike fee all inclusive; no host bar.
Our chef will be Kathleen Vojkovich Bombard:
A second‐generation native of Santa Catalina Island, Kathleen's Croatian heritage
is the foundation for her lifelong passion for food and wine. Kathleen has been
cooking professionally for more than fifteen years and received the distinction of
Certified Chef de Cuisine ® from the American Culinary Federation. Kathleen completed
her coursework at the Culinary Institute of America ‐ Hyde Park, New York and St. Helena, California.

BZ Jones was a sailor’s sailor who took no prisoners. The wilder the race or cruise, the better BZ liked it. BZ would sail on any well found vessel‐‐ as long as he liked his shipmates and the Merlot didn’t run out. He was always in demand for his offshore prowess, his humor, and his disdain for pretense. He was aboard the maxi racer Kialoa II when she won the punishing 1971 Sydney to Hobart Race. He raced all the big offshore events in the Pacific and Atlantic. At the age of 77, he signed up for a month long sailing expedition to Antarctica aboard the 65’ sloop Alaska Eagle. A few years prior, he sailed aboard Alaska Eagle from Hobart, Tasmania to the sub‐Antarctic island of Macquarie. After departing Macquarie for New Zealand, Alaska Eagle found herself in a gale in the Roaring Forties. BZ was steering with freezing wind and water cascading over the boat. His watch was over, and the two young men who were to relieve him hesitated in the hatchway. From the warmth of the cabin, they peered out
at a soaked BZ, not sure about venturing into the howling melee. “Come on out here you bastards! BZ shouted above the din, “You’re gonna love this!!” BZ was born in 1925 and raised in Pasadena and La Jolla, California. Along with his brothers Thad and Nelson, BZ was introduced to sailing by his father Thaddeus, aboard the family yawl Aquilla. He later attended the Catalina Island School for Boys at Toyon until Pearl Harbor, when students were moved off the Island. He graduated from Princeton with a degree in electrical engineering and a passion for Rugby. Upon graduating, he moved on to his MBA from Stanford. BZ followed school with a successful business career in industry and com‐mercial real estate. In 1952, he had the good fortune to marry Rosemary “Rosie” Tilt of Pasadena. They raised Ned, Allie, and Laura at their home in Newport Beach. He passed his love of sailing onto his kids aboard the family’s Island Clipper sloop, Sanguine. There were many trips to Catalina, but one of the most compelling was in 1958, when BZ and Rosie sailed to Catalina’s east end with brother Thad and his friends Steve Royce and Dick Lyon aboard. Early in the
morning, with the beach just a few hundred yards off, the three young men swam ashore and hiked 11 hours to the west end of the Island, where they swam back out to a waiting BZ and Rosie. Unlike brother Thad, BZ was not a dedicated hiker. If he was going to exert himself, he preferred a challenging offshore race, or rugby, or a scene in a bar similar to rugby. BZ’s subsequent sailboats included the Offshore 40 Halcyon, and later his beloved Peterson 44 Raven, now sailed by son Ned. Catalina always remained BZ’s favorite sailing destination. He was a founding member of the Catalina Marineros, contributing to the Conservancy and participating in many events to support the Island he loved.
