Central Council for Research in Siddha is an autonomous body under the Ministry of

AYUSH, Government of India. This autonomous body is registered under the Societies

Act in July 2010. The AYUSH ministry was especially created for traditional system of

medicines in the year 2014 for effective development and promotion of AYUSH systems.

Central Council for Research in Siddha was established as a separate council in the year

2010 after bifurcating from Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha

(CCRAS). It is the apex body for Siddha system of medicine in India. It is the authority

for setting standards for Research Methodology and Guidelines in Siddha.

After re-organization the institutes/units have been classified into 4 categories, of which

the CCRS institutes/units fall under ‘C’ and ‘D’ categories mentioned as under:

As per the directions of MoA CCRS observed the Swatchta Pakhwada from 16.10.2018 to 30.10.2018 at CCRS Hqrs and all the 7 peripheral units.

I. Innovative Work related to Swachhta

1. Competitions focussing on theme of Swachh Pakhwada

1.1. Drawing Competition

CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units organised drawing competition for school children and Staff members of CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units for the promotion of Swachh Bharat activities and created awareness among them and distributed prizes for the best drawing depicting Swachh Bharat theme Colouring and Drawing competitions were conducted depicting the concept of Clean India for children studying in Govt. Primary Schools situated nearby Siddha Regional Research Institute, Puducherry. Around 300 students from Govt primary and middle school of Venila Nagar, Saram and Pudupalayam have participated in the said competitions. Drawing with Slogan competition was conducted for the officials and staff members of CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units.

1.2. Innovative Talk Competition

Oratorical competition was organized for school children and employees of CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units. Elocution competition was conducted for students of Govt. Middle School, Pudupalyam and Savarayalu Govt. Girls High School, Puducherry portraying the concept of Swachhta. The students actively participated and prizes were distributed for best talk. Officials and staff members of CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units enthusiastically participated in the speech competition pertaining to the theme Swachh Bharat promotion and awareness

1.3. Rangoli Competition

CCRS and its peripheral institutes organised Rangoli, Quiz, Elocution essay writing competition in the theme of promotion of Swachh Bharat activities and created awareness among the CCRS Staffs and Officers.

1.4. Quiz Competition

Quiz competition was conducted for the employees of the CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units regarding ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’

1.5. Essay Competition

CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units conducted essay competitions to sensitize the awareness of Swachh Pakhwada.

2. Skit Performance

For the observance of Swachh Pakhwada programme “Korakkar drama team” headed by Dr. N. J. Muthukumar Director General, CCRS, visited Chennai High School, MMDA Colony, Chennai and conducted Swachh Bharat awareness campaign. A skit with five concept consisting of

1. Importance of Food Hygiene 2. Importance of Hand Hygiene 3. Importance of Sweepers Respect 4. Harmful effects of Tobacco usage 5. Harmful effects of Plastic usage

Swachh Bharat promotion song and skit were performed by the officers and staffs of CCRS. Dr. S. Selvarajan, DDO CCRS delivered special address, DG, CCRS delivered the presidential address and distributed antiseptic soaps and sweets for the school students.

A cultural event was organized on 29th October 2018 by M/s Infinite Art to Heart, Chennai. The theatre artists performed highlighting the theme of “Clean India”.

3. Wall Painting

CCRS and its peripheral institute premises were cleaned by the officers and employees of CCRS and walls are painted with different themes of Swachh Bharat activities and created awareness among them.

4. Plant Saplings:

CCRS and its peripheral institutes were cleaned by the officers and employees of CCRS and new plant saplings were planted.

Plantation of herbs and tree saplings were done by the Geriatric patients.

Cleaning of surrounding areas, disposal of wastes and plantation of herbal samplings around office premises were conducted. Trees mentioned in Siddha system of medicine were planted.

The initiative was also conducted with a tree plantation drive with plantation Mahilam (Mimusops elengi L.) saplings in the street area and vowed to nurture the place clean and keep green.

Trees were planted on the premises of Siddha Clinical Research Unit,

Palayamkottai. The premises around the Thirumoolar statue was cleaned and trees were planted around it.

Herbal samplings were planted by the patient’s in the office premises

5. Rallies

CCRS and its peripheral institutes / units conducted street rallies of 4 - 5 kms holding banner and playing drums distributing IEC materials in and around residential areas of PP Garden, TP Chatram of Shenoy Nagar and Aminjikarai on 25th October 2018 and in MMDA, Arumbakkam areas on 26th October 2018. On 27th October 2018 the team proceeded to Ayappakkam to create awareness among the general public on cleanliness. Chairman, Swachh Bharat Committee gave brief speech through Public Address Systems at various points to the general public emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and the hazardness of open defecation/spitting/dumping wates in the open places.

6. Swachhta logo

As a part of promotion of Swachh Bharat Swachhta logo was printed on medicines covers using environment friendly paper covers in Siddha Clinical Research Unit, New Delhi.

II Routine work done throughout the year

Medical Camp

CCRS and its peripheral institutes/units organized a free Siddha Medical Camp at Panchayat Union Middle School, Ayyampudur of Salem district. The importance of self-cleanliness and the surrounding were emphasized to the school students.

III. Work done as per Swachhta Action Plan-2018

1. CCRS, Hqtrs. Office, Chennai

Cleaning of office premises was done on daily basis by housekeeping and attendants. Other than the routine cleaning, periodical cleaning of other areas involving all staff are done in the following manner:

o Every Monday – Technical section o Every Tuesday - Library o Wednesday - Admin and other section

During Independence Day celebration 15-08-2018, the awareness campaign was conducted at CCRS Hqtrs. for making the premises as plastic free zone.

Swachhta Action Plan (SAP) proposal from the peripheral institute/ units of CCRS has analysed the following. o Sufficient funds released to SCRI, Chennai for carrying out the activities

(Rs.10.36/- Lakhs) o Preliminary estimate received from the SRRI, Puducherry for providing

toilet for physically challenged persons in the existing common toilet, wire mesh shutter with frame and ramp at main entrance with stainless steel hand rail for Siddha Hospital, SRRI, Puducherry (11.86/- Lakhs).

o Preliminary estimate is received from PWD for carrying out the SAP activities of SCRU, Palayamkottai (4.15/- Lakhs).

2. SCRI, Chennai

Waste Box / Dust Bins --- 2 no’s purchased and placed in appropriate place after

consulting with cooperation authorities for its timely disposal.

Drainage connection to be repaired.

A meeting was conducted on 13.07.2018 and a list of various activities was planned to be undertaken and the following points were discussed: 1. No corporation water supply though charges are paid to corporation to relay

pipeline to sump etc. 2. To pursue with Metro water to re-lay line or to apply for fresh connection and

to discuss with A.E. and steps to take on priority basis. 3. Steps to be taken for backyard pipes concealing. 4. To obtain UC from PWD for Lift, Ramp etc. and to take steps. 5. To repair bathroom/toilets at III floor, SCRI Auditorium and II Floor Admn.

Block and to obtain estimate from PWD. 6. Already RWH provision exists and steps to be taken for cleaning for rainwater

recharge.

3. SRRI, Puducherry

Cleaning of hospital and office premises are done on daily basis by housekeeping

and attendants. Other than routine, periodical cleaning of other areas involving all

staff are done in the following manner:

Every Monday - Guest room

Every Tuesday - Committee hall

Every Wednesday - Library

A meeting was arranged with CPWD authorities for building a toilet facility for

physically challenged patients along with a ramp in OPD area. Accordingly, CPWD

officials visited the campus and the feasibility was checked, followed by which

estimation in this regard was given in September 2018 for getting administrative

approval from the council.

4. SRRI, Thiruvananthapuram. As the part of occupying the newly constructed 3rd floor of the building for SRRI,

Thiruvananthapuram, every staff of SRRI actively took part in shifting the computers, furniture, files, stationeries etc. to the new space.

On 28.07.2018 SRRI, Thiruvananthapuram initiated a special programmes for cleaning the surrounding area of the office building hand with Reginal Ayurveda Research Institute for Life Style related disorders (RARILSD).

Cleaning the surroundings of the office premises and disposal of the garbage every day.

Dusting and moping of the staircases are performed on weekly basis.

All the departments / sections of office are cleaned in alternative days, including dusting and cleaning of the computers and all other office equipment.

The corridors of the ground and 3rd floor are dusted and moped every day.

5. Siddha Medical Plants Garden, Mettur Dam Action taken report on “Swachhata Hi Seva, 2018” at SMPG, Mettur Dam. As a precursor to the launch of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, and in the run up to the 4th anniversary of Swachh Bharat Mission, Siddha Medicinal Plants Garden (SMPG), Central Council for Research in Siddha (CCRS), Mettur Dam, Salem Dt. observed Swachhata Hi Seva 2018 (SHS) during 15th September to 2nd October, 2018. Swachh Bharat Campaign: The Clean India programme is being carried out in the office and in the garden. As per our office programme, every Saturday, mass cleaning camp is being organized in the garden and in the office. This lends further impetus towards a cleaner India, to make Prime Ministers’s Swachhta Hi Seva Abhiyan, 2018 Successful.

6. SCRU, Palayamkottai

Activities done

Order received from the Council regarding SAP.

Letter sent to State PWD Department requesting to provide rough cost estimate for renovating the toilets, walls and rooms of SCRU, Palayamkottai.

Junior Engineer from State PWD visited SCRU,Palayamkottai and measured the area to be renovated for preparing the rough cost estitimate.

Received the rough cost estimate for an amount of 5.50 lakhs renovation from State PWD.

Resubmitted to State PWD for revision of rough cost estimate.

Received the revised rough cost estimate for an amount of Rs. 4.15 lakhs from State PWD.

IV. Impact Assessment

Impact assessment of hand wash training among the employees of CCRS headquarters office Impact assessment of Hand wash training given by qualified medical professional. Background:

All the officers/ staffs must be aware and practice hand hygiene procedures to prevent community acquired infections. Aims:

To improve practice of hand hygiene among officers/ staffs of CCRS in the CCRS office setting.

To evaluate the effectiveness of educational training on hand hygiene among the officers. Methods:

The study is a prospective one, before and after the educational intervention (Hand wash training). The hand wash training was conducted on 23.10.2018 at mini conference hall auditorium SCRI Chennai. 35 officers/employees of CCRS are participated in the session. Standard WHO (World Health Organisation) defined guidelines on hand wash was presented to the employees in the simple english and local language (Tamil) by qualified medical professional. At the end of the educational intervention hand wash training was demonstrated to the Officers/employees of CCRS. A Questionnaire was given to the officers/ employees of CCRS before and after the educational intervention. Participants filled in a questionnaire. The questionnaire has 21 questions related to hand washing practices and it was prepared using previously published studies. Educational training program was designed and conducted by the qualified medical professional on hand hygiene importance, measures, technique, time and compliance. Results:

The questionnaire administered before the educational intervention and after educational intervention were analysed. The questionnaire obtained after the educational intervention showed the improvement in every part of the questionnaire related to the hand wash practises. Conclusion: The educational intervention was effective in improvement in hand wash practises among the officers/ staffs of CCRS.

Impact assessment of knowledge on Swatch Bharat Abhyaan among school children The questionnaire consisting of 10 questions were administered to 100 school students of Chennai High School, Chennai and the result was assessed before and after the Awareness Campaign. The results showed that only 60% of students scored more than 50%/100% marks before the campaign. The awareness campaign was conducted to the students. After the awareness campaign o Swatch Bharat same questionnaires was administered and it is found that 80% student scored above 50%/100%. This shows the success of the awareness campaign among the students.

IEC materials

IEC material in Malayalam, English and Hindi was prepared and was distributed to the general public at Poojappura, Thiruvananthapuram and the OP patients of SRRI, Thiruvananthapuram. The IEC materials comprising of the preventive and hygienic measures in Siddha system as mentioned in Thaeraiyer pinianugaa vithi ozhukkam and the fundamentals about Siddha system of medicine. were distributed to the public in Saraswathy Mandapam, Poojappura.

Hand wash training

Hand wash training, Disease prevention through Siddha system of Medicine and Massive hygienic protection awareness sessions were conducted to the staffs of CCRS, Hqtrs. Office. Chennai.

A demonstration on hand washing and a mini lecture on disease prevention was given by the staff nurses of SRRI. (Smt. S. Gajalakshmi, Smt. V. Sathya Sudha and Selvi. P. Jennifer) to all the employees on 29th Oct 2018.

SMPG premises have been cleaned by the workers from 18/10/2018 to 20/10/2018. In addition to above, hand was training imparted to all garden workers on 18/10/2018.

The impact of poor hand hygiene habits is linked to increased occurrences of illness were discussed during the event. Dr. M. Manokari Research Assistant (Bot.), explaining the importance of Hand wash hygiene to the school students.

As a part of Swachhta pakhwada campaign, handwash training was given to the housekeeping staff of SJIIM on 29/10/2018. Dr .C. Eswaran R.A (S), Dr. K. P.Vanmathi R.A (S) trained the housekeeping staff about the steps to be followed in washing hands and the necessity of following proper hand washing steps.
