The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences accepts SCSC 304, Plant Breeding and Genetics, as

meeting our requirement for UG genetics. SCSC 304 explores the genetic improvement of crops

by hybridization and selection as well as breeding methods and techniques applicable to

naturally self-pollinated, cross-pollinated, and asexually reproduced plants. Dr. Hague introduces

UG students to botany and basic genetics applicable to plants, evaluation of populations,

manipulation of populations to improve crop performance, plant breeding systems predominately

applicable to agronomic crops, and a number of special topics that includes specific crop plant

breeding of agronomic and horticultural plants.

I believe that SCSC 304 would serve as an appropriate course to introduce genetics and plant

breeding to horticultural students.
