Where We All Need to Be In Joshua chapters 3 and 4, the record of Israel's crossing of the Jordan River is describe. In chapter 5, it is recorded that the children of Israel encamped in the plains of Jericho in a place which they called Gilgal, because the Lord had taken away the disgrace of Egypt from them. Gary C. Hampton in his commen-tary, When God Ruled Israel, points out that five fascinating things that take place in Joshua 5:

"First, we learn that the kings of the Canaanites by the sea lost heart when they learned how the Lord had caused Israel to pass through Jordan on dry ground (5:1.). Second, the Lord required the Israelites to renew the covenant with him by circumcising all the males (5:2-9). Third, Israel kept its first Passover in the promised land (5:10-11). Fourth, God ceased providing the manna when the people had eaten of the fruits of the new land (5:12). Fifth, Joshua had a meeting with the captain of the Lord's host (5:13-15). This must have been the pre-incarnate Christ since he accept-ed worship from Joshua and instructed him to remove his shoes because he was on holy ground. He appeared with his sword drawn because he was ready to fight against the wicked Canaanites."

I want us to focus our attention on verses 13 through 15 of the fifth chapter. The children of Israel had also turned their eyes towards the conquest of Jericho, a mighty fortified city. It is at this time that Joshua is met by a stranger. The text reads,

13 One day, Joshua was near Jericho when he saw a man standing some distance in front of him. The man was holding a sword, so Joshua walked up to him and asked, "Are you on our side or on our enemies' side?" 14 "Neither," he answered. "I am here because I am the commander of the LORD's army." Josh-ua fell to his knees and bowed down to the ground. "I am your servant," he said. "Tell me what to do." 15 "Take off your sandals," the commander answered. "This is a holy place." So Joshua took off his sandals. (Contemporary English Version)

Joshua asked the captain of the Lord's army a very interesting question. He asked, "Are you on our side of on our enemies' side?" Perhaps many of us can identify with Joshua's question. Many times we are faced with challenges in life and wonder if God is on our side. Yet, the most intriguing part of this discourse is not the question but the answer the Lord gives Joshua. The answer given is a simple "Neither". Wow! What a sobering thought. David Guzik writes, "The question really wasn’t if the LORD was on Joshua’s side. The proper question was if Joshua was on the LORD’s side (Enduring Word Commentary)."

Therefore, the only "side" that matters is God's. If we are to conquer our greatest obstacles, we all must get on the Lord's side. It is also noteworthy to consider Joshua's challenge to the people at the end of his life. In Joshua 24:15, he said, "choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." When the Lord's people move from God's side, divisive-ness and contentions can destroy the glorious victory, beautiful peace and lasting fellowship we have in Christ.

The Seven Churches of the Book of Revelation Part 5

"Sardis: The Dead Church" https://goo.gl/JhYKml

Revelation 3:1-6 1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. 4 You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”’
