Objective: Students will make a claim about the type of person a character in literature is based on the methods of characterization used by the author.

Agenda: Review Yesterday’s Reading Finish Romeo and Juliet (2.2) Check for Understanding: Claim

Homework: Study for your Greek root quiz over roots 21-24 (poly, geo, chron, & chrom) on Wednesday.

METHODS OF CHARACTERIZATION (1) Author’s description of the character

Physical description, interests, personality, etc. Not common in Shakespeare except in the character list

(2) The character’s words and actions Dialogue – the majority of the play Movements, choices, etc. shown through dialogue

Very few stage directions in Shakespeare

(3) Other characters’ reactions to the character Other characters’ reactions to the character

Usually shown in dialogue behind the character’s back

(4) The character’s thoughts and feelings Telling another trusted character in dialogue Internal thoughts = soliloquy***

Sometimes, there is an “aside.”

READING QUESTIONS

Why is Romeo reluctant to let Juliet know he is in the garden?

What does Juliet ask Romeo to do? What does she promise to do?

What warning does Juliet give him? Why is she embarrassed? Why is she worried? Why doesn’t Juliet want Romeo to swear by

the moon? What is Juliet’s attitude at this point? Do you

agree with her feelings about the relationship?

Title and author are stated at the beginning. (1 pt.) The title is underlined. Refer to the author by his/her last name.

It is about a specific idea. (1 pt.) Ex: a particular character Ex: a certain conflict in the story Ex: a specific theme in the story

It is debatable, and you take a clear position. (1 pt.) This means there is no “correct” answer. You have to take one side or the other, not both.

Includes 2 valid reasons to support the claim. (1 pt.)
