Choose Life Committee New Chair My name is Betty Anne Hodges and I am chairing St. Clare’s Choose Life Committee. The mission of St. Clare’s Choose Life Committee is as follows: to protect, defend, and support the right to life of every human being from the beginning of life to natural death. We work to promote re- spect for every human being, born or unborn, persons with dis- abilities, and the elderly. We hope to achieve this mission through support of local organi- zations such as Gianna House, Pregnancy Aid, Imago Dei Crisis Pregnancy Center, national or- ganizations such as Right to Life, and international agencies such as Unbound. We work to edu- cate on topics such as abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, and the death penalty by hosting guest speakers, providing educa- tional materials and keeping up to date on legislation which will advance the protection of hu- man life. To fulfill this mission the following events are scheduled: Weekends of September 21/ 22, October 19/20: Petition drive to ban partial birth abortion. Michigan’s Constitution allows the people of Michigan to initiate legislation through a petition. The goal of this legislation is to amend our partial-birth abor- tion ban by adding the banning of dismember- ment abortion procedures. The advantage of this approach is that the bill’s language cannot be changed by the legislature and cannot be vetoed by the governor. For more information visit: https://michi anvalueslife.org Weekend of September 14/15: Baby Bottle Coin Drive for Pregnancy Aid. Please take home a baby bottle located at the exits of church, fill with spare change and/or a check made out to Pregnancy Aid and bring back by the weekend of October 5/6. Pregnancy Aid is a local organization (just up Mack) that provides support, counseling, and care for preg- nant women and new mothers. The money collected will help them with general operations. For more information on Pregnancy Aid visit: Sunday, October 6, 2-3:30PM: Life Chain on Mack. This event is a visible statement to the sur- rounding community that St Clare supports and promotes life. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Fellow- ship will follow in the social hall. If you have signs from last year, please bring them. I am looking for a core group to help me with our mis- sion. Communication will be done via email and most time commitments will be before and/or after the Mass you regularly attend. Our Parish Community

I hope you had a blessed weekSchool is in full swing! Our Religious Ed. and RCIA

programs began last week, and our Thursday

Faith Formation gatherings will resume soon. I

even saw a few snowflakes on Monday! Ok, just

kidding, but before you know it… that is how

quickly time passes.

The work of our Parish Visioning Team (PVT) has

concluded. The AOD has approved our plan and now we will

move to the next phase of implementation with more information

to follow.

Last week we buried a member of our St. Clare family, Susan Curt-

singer Kuhl. Susan had been the Religious Education Secretary for

the past few years. She enjoyed the opportunity this created to

share her faith, especially with the children. Susan’s brother Mi-

chael is also a member of our facilities management team. We

extend our heartfelt sympathies and prayers to Michael and to

Susan’s husband Larry and son Billy. Please keep them in your

prayers.

Faith Formation

Today is. the Feast of Our

Sorrowful Mother. As she

is the Patron of our

Servite Community,

allow me to share her

sorrows:

1. Prophecy of Simeon (a sword of

sorrow will pierce your heart.)

2. Flight into Egypt (they had to flee for

their lives and travel to a foreign

country)

3. Loss of Jesus for 3 days (Jesus was

preaching in the temple while Mary

and Joseph were in a caravan

traveling back to their home,

unaware that Jesus was not with

them.)

4. Mary meets Jesus on the road to

Calvary (Imagine meeting your son

or daughter covered in blood and

bruises)

5. Mary stands at the foot of the cross.

(look at our mural in church)

6. Mary takes into her arms the dead

body of Jesus. (the REAL pieta)

7. Mary assists at the dead body of

Jesus. (imagine her tears.)

I know there were many more sorrows that

Mary had, this highlights only seven. There

were many joys in Mary’s life as well. We

cannot forget those. Each of us at some

point in our life takes on the role of Mary in

her sorrows and in her joys. Be grateful for

the gift Mary is to us, her children.

Children’s Religious Education: Sunday

family continues this morning and Monday

classes tomorrow. If your child was not in

attendance last week, please assist them to

get registered and attend this week.

On Monday, September 30, there will be a

parent meeting at 6:30 in the social hall.

One parent from each family should be in

attendance.

Little Lambs: Our famous little group will

meet this morning at the 9:00 Mass. Parents,

you will be receiving a type of registration

so we can have your information in case we need to contact you

outside of Mass time. We are still looking for helpers for this group or

more helpers to begin a group for those 8-12. Anyone out there

interested? We may need some adults who have taken the

Protecting God’s Children class to assist.

Anyone wishing to assist (and we need you) must have the Called

to Serve workshop (for high schoolers) or Protecting God’s Children

(for 18 and above) You must register on line. Go to the aod.org site

to register. There are papers on the tables in church with possible

sites for you to attend. If you need assistance, please see Sr. Kathy.

Adult Faith Formation: Don't look now but Thursday Night Adult Faith

Formation is right around the corner! This year’s program has been

revamped to include 5 special evenings featuring live speakers,

free catered dinners courtesy of Edibles Rex, and free PGC-certified

babysitting. Also, in store are 17 Thursday evenings with all new

video presentations and the popular small group discussions. Praise

& Worship will once again be led by Mark (Guitar) Fikany.

The season kicks off on Thursday, October 3rd with special guests,

Anita & Deacon Mike Houghton, as they present, "Rejecting

Relativism - Being the Primary Witness of Faith to Your Family".

Come learn and grow as a community of Faith.

and friends as well as supports the work of SVdP in the communi-

ty. There is no cost to actually participate in the walk, (other than

the state park fee to drive onto Belle Isle) but St. Clare walkers,

friends and supporters are invited to make a financial contribu-

tion of ANY amount which will go directly to our conference

treasury for the work we do within the St. Clare and former St.

Philomena boundaries.

Christian Service CornerBE BOLD BE HOLY BE CATHOLIC

The Christian Service Commission held its first meeting for the 2019-

2020 schedule. Though we usually meet on Monday evenings, we

gathered for the First Tuesday Mass at 6:30 p.m. Fr. Andrew gave

our commission a special blessing and thanked Bill Harrington for his

many years of dedicated service as the chairperson of Christian

Service. Though the torch was passed, we will keep Bill on speed

dial to ask him to lend a hand on some of our upcoming projects.

We will be holding a Mercy in Action event at St. Clare on Saturday,

October 26, 2019. Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan in

collaboration with Christian Service coordinators and volunteers

throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit are serving parish

communities by performing corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

We will spend a half day of service here at St. Clare. More specific

details will follow but for now, mark your calendar if you are

interested in volunteering. Please email me at

[email protected] if you have questions.

At the end of November, we will once again be decorating the

Giving Trees and collecting gifts and gift cards for the various

recipients of the kind generosity of our St. Clare family. We will also

plan to visit the St. Joseph Manor during Advent to share some

Christmas cheer with the residents and staff.

Plan to join us for a weekend of fun for Oktoberfest on October 18-

20. We will play Bingo on Friday night, enjoy delicious food and

great music on Saturday and cheer on the Lions on Sunday. We will

conclude this FUNdraiser with Mass under the tent on Sunday

evening. This is a great event for all families and friends of St. Clare.

Hope to see you there.

ioner, Tom DeCorte.

Tom won the prize at the recent Detroit

Sports Media Charity Golf Scramble and

since he did not need tires, thought that St.

Vincent de Paul could use of them for

someone in need.

Thank you Tom.

Catholic Service AppealCatechetical Sunday

This Sunday is Catechetical Sunday, a day the U.S. bishops have

set aside to affirm the ministry of the men, women, and young

adults who teach our faith in parishes and Catholic schools.

For 2019, the Archdiocese has set a special theme as part of the

next phase of Unleash the Gospel: Sent on Mission.

“Encountering the Risen Christ” reminds pastors, staff members,

catechists, Catholic school teachers, and all of us in this commu-

nity of faith of our roles, through Baptism, in passing on the faith

to children and adults.

Your CSA gifts allow the Department of Evangelization, Catech-

esis and Schools to support religious education directors and

their staffs through consultation concerning policy, curriculum

guidelines, and text selection, as well as professional growth and

formation opportunities and certification.

For more information about CSA-funded ministries, programs,

and services, go to aod.org.

A Program to Help Couples Heal and Renew their Marriages.

Do you feel lost, alone or bored in your marriage? Are you frustrat-

ed, hurt or angry with your spouse? Are you constantly fighting?

Or, do you simply shut down? Have you thought about separation

or divorce? Does talking about it make it worse?

RETROUVAILLE CAN HELP!! (We've had a 76% success rate)

The Retrouvaille Program consists of a weekend experience com-

bined with a series of twelve follow up (or Post) sessions over the

course of six weeks. It provides the tools to help put your marriage

in order again. The main emphasis of the program is on communi-

cation in marriage between husband and wife. It will give you the

opportunity to rediscover each other and examine your lives to-

gether in a new and positive way.

Five years after the Retrouvaille weekend we surveyed attendees

and 76% of respondents were still married! There is an alternative

to divorce! This quite possibly could be the best gift you ever give

yourself, your spouse, your children, your family and your friends!!

*Please pass this information on to anyone who you suspect might

be a hurting couple

The next Retrouvaille program will begin

Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month

October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The

Most Reverend Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will celebrate Mass at the

Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Sunday, October 6 at 11

a.m. in honor of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Join us to

remember those who have been lost, and to pray for couples hoping to

conceive a child. At the service a blessing will be given to married cou-

ples who desire a baby and a prayer will be offered for families who have

lost a pregnancy, infant, baby or child.

Please RSVP and tell us:

• If you would like a blessing for desiring a pregnancy

• The name of the baby, infant or child who died.
