Malaysia’s Escape pivots to kids/familiesNew RM10/US$2 plan targets 3 kids age groups

The local version of CJ E&M’s I Can See Your Voice music game show format premiered on Bulgaria’s Nova TV in November with a 36% rating share. Data provided by CJ E&M put the show in top spot for the slot with a rating of 13.3% among 18 to 49 year olds. The format has been licenced to seven countries.

Malaysian OTT platform Escape has refo-cused its entertainment service to target kids and families.

The pivot, introduced in November, in-volves a RM10/US$2.30-a-month plan for unlimited movies and kids TV series “spe-cially chosen for kids”.

Content focuses on three demograph-ic groups within the kids space: pre-school 3-6 years old, kids 7-10 years old and tweens 11-14 years old.

Titles are a mix of local and interna-tional kids shows, such as Dora Explorer, ABC Monsters, Hi-5, Bola Kampung, Astro Boy and Power Rangers Mega Force.

The new platform also has a la carte

Watch One movie options starting from RM5/US$2.30 for the Awesome pack (two movie titles).

Escape has not yet said what drove the shift in strategy.

From launch in 2013 until the end of Oc-tober this year, Escape was offering more than 1,000 TV shows, movies and live TV/events, bundled into three monthly pack-ages: Black Magic horror movie, Cinema-World and Watch All plans, priced from RM10.30/US$2.60 a month.

Escape, which has over one million registered subs in April 2016, is owned by Escape Axiata, the entertainment arm of telco Celcom Axiata.

The advertising industry is undergoing unprecedented change.

Platforms are expanding, feedback is instant, and the consumer has taken control.

Maneuver through the complicated but crucial arena of brand building seen through the eyes of the world’s most powerful marketers.

Jan 2017 debut for new AFC originalMartin Yan show wrapped into Love to Cook campaign

Scripps Networks Interactive (SNI) Asia Food Channel (AFC) premieres new Asian original, Martin Yan Asian Favourites, on 5 January.

The eight-episode celebrity chef series is the second of three original shows involved in SNI’s wide-ranging Love to Cook umbrella campaign with Panasonic.

The year-long campaign launched in August this year with original series Cooking for Love, and runs to July 2017.

Nielsen viewership data from SNI shows Cooking for Love on Malay-sia’s top five list of regional channels’ original productions for this year.

Comparisons with the first two epi-sodes of originals puts Cooking for Love fourth after Sony Pictures Televi-sion Networks Asia/AXN’s The Amaz-ing Race Asia, which topped the list; Family Kitchen with Sherson, another Scripps Networks Interactive series; and How Do I Look? Asia from NBCU-niversal for Diva.

Measured across the first three epi-sodes of 13 original productions and ad-funding original shows, Cooking for Love tops the list.

The series soared to second in its slot/s (Saturday 2pm-2.30pm/7pm-7.30pm, 25-54 Adults) behind only KIX HD among all English-language channels in Malaysia two weeks after its premiere.

Vietnam had the highest Facebook engagement rate across all AFC markets at 35%. Engagement in Sin-gapore, Malaysia and Thailand was 28%, SNI said.

Viu hits 4m users across AsiaPhilippines added to regional footprint

Hong Kong telco PCCW’s Viu OTT/streaming platform has hit four million unique users a year after its launch.

The platform has also announced its expansion into the Philippines, giving it a presence in six markets in the region.Viu has not confirmed its Thai launch, rumoured to be on the cards for early 2017.

Announcing the Philippines launch on 29 Nov, PCCW Media Group man-aging director, Janice Lee, said Viu re-corded over 218 million video views in Q3 2016, doubling that of the preced-ing three months. Viu’s users consume on average 1.2 hours per day. On av-erage, 12 videos are viewed by each user every week.

Titles include new shows such as Nature Cat and Guess How Much I Love You – The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare along with library pro-grammes such as Barney and Ange-lina Ballerina.

Discovery Kids India, True Visions in Thailand and Mediacorp in Singa-pore acquired the first season of the animated series Nature Cat, which debuted last year on PBS Kids.

Singapore-listed YuuZoo Corp has closed a “significant” investment in Ryan Kavanaugh’s troubled U.S. indie Relativity Media.

Thomas Zilliacus, YuuZoo executive chairman, said on closing that the final multi-screen partnership was “signifi-cantly wider and deeper” than origi-nally discussed. No new value was put on the deal.

Singapore’s YuuZoo closes RelativityDeal wider/deeper than original, Zilliacus says

YuuZoo unveiled plans in October to buy 33.3% of Relativity immediately for US$50 million (US$27.5 million by end November and the balance in cash or YuuZoo shares), with an option to increase its investment to a major-ity stake over the next 12 months for an additional US$100 million, accord-ing to a filing with the Singapore Ex-change.

Top billing for non-linear @ ATF Distributors underline commitment to TV everywhere

28 NOV-11 dec 2016Page 8.

Non-linear rights played a huge role in Asia’s licensing environment in 2016 as platforms old and new moved towards satisfying consumer demand for content across all screens. The booming gen-eration of SVOD players will continue to roll out aggressive customer acquisition plans driven by big data and even big-ger ambitions in 2017.

Going into 2017, rights holders and dis-tributors are committed to helping part-ners strengthen their non-linear offerings, including catch-up. Higher engagement is a holy grail, and distributors are hell-bent on riding the region’s mobile growth.

Asia is embracing mobile digital tech more intensely than ever before, says Keshet International’s Asia head, Gary Pudney. The company’s higher focus on delivering prime-time entertainment that incorporates digital and mobile in-teractivity “satisfies Asian viewers’ hunger to become more active and engaged viewers,” Pudney adds.

Both DW Transtel and Caracol Interna-cional saw a significant increase in inter-est from diverse markets in Asia in 2016,

The Young Pope, FremantleMedia

and expect the stronger demand to continue in 2017. Caracol says suc-cessful premieres in Asia in 2016 are an indicator of growing appetite for series and telenovelas, and that ex-pansion efforts in the region will con-tinue in 2017.

Strong stories are, as always, an entertainment industry bedrock, and remakes of classic tales to suit modern audiences is one of 2016/2017’s leading trends, said Globo’s Asia/Oceania sales exec, Roberto Cabrini. “A good love story always has a place in the hearts of our viewers,” he said.

FremantleMedia’s talent entertain-ment and gameshow formats con-tinue to be amongst the most popu-lar international formats across Asia, attracting significant TV audiences for family viewing. FremantleMedia says this success is being replicated in TV distribution with, among others, major new scripted series The Young Pope, starring Jude Law and Diane Keaton.

Vietnam, China and Thailand are Asia’s top three formats markets by volume, with 50% of the total number of formats on air in 2016 or commissioned for 2017.

ContentAsia’s new Formats Outlook, published ahead of the Asia TV Forum 2016 in Singapore (7-9 Dec 2016), also shows a rising taste for scripted formats and a step back from anything pan-re-

gional that crosses the US$4m mark.Vietnam ends 2016 with more formats

on air or commissioned during the year than any other market in Asia. In dollar terms, China, despite restrictions, more restrictions, other restrictions and expec-tations of added restrictions, tops the list for amounts being spent on everything from drama to talent shows.

The top six markets have a combined 251 formats – 76% share – of the total 329 on air in Asia (or commissioned for 2017) from January to 15 November 2016.

The seven regional formats on our list are led by the two shows that topped the US$3-million mark – The Amazing Race Asia season five on Sony Pictures Tel-evision Networks Asia’s AXN; Asia’s Next Top Model season four, which aired on FOX Networks Group’s (FNG) StarWorld early in 2016; and Asia’s Next Top Model season five, which is in production for StarWorld (no airdate confirmed but likely in early 2017.

FremantleMedia and Endemol Shine Group are the biggest players in Asia with 147 – 45% share – of the total 329 formats on air/commissioned.

SPTI seals Korean TV drama output deal Edgy drama, “Hyena”, up first Sony Pictures Television Interna-tional (SPTI) has animal sounds high on its repertoire at the Asian Television Forum this year with a just-signed deal for edgy Korean drama Hyena marking a new phase in the company’s Asian Hollywood Studio strategy.

The long-term exclusive deal with Korean media conglomer-ate, CJ Media Inc, to distribute the 16-part Hyena – dubbed the Korean male version of Sex and the City – in Asia (exclud-ing Japan, Korea and China) is part of a broader output agree-ment that gives SPTI access to all dramas and movies of the week produced by CJ for basic cable or terrestrial television. The agreement also includes video-on-demand, pay-per-view and IPTV, but excludes home video.

U.S. titles rule in Taiwan online Running Man, Signal fly flag for Asian titles in Taiwan

Source: Parrot Analytics Date Range: 17-23 November, 2016 Market: Taiwan Demand Expressions™: Total audience demand being expressed for a title, within a country. Netflix’s Black Mirror is the most popular digital original series in Taiwan by a large margin, with 85% more demand than the recent release The Grand Tour. The more typically popular series, such as Luke Cage and Stranger Things, rank lower than in other Asian markets, revealing the slightly different tastes of this market. An unusual number of the top digital original series in Taiwan have connections to the U.K: Black Mirror and Ripper Street are continuations of British TV series (and House of Cards is a remake), The Grand Tour stars the former Top Gear hosts, and The Crown has the

royal family as its subjects. These eclectic choices extend to the

overall top titles. The Walking Dead is the most in-demand series, as it is in most mar-kets, but the Korean variety show Running Man has only 3% less demand. Another Korean title, Signal, ranks highly, just be-hind U.S. show Fresh Off The Boat, which features a Taiwanese-American family. In addition, two American satirical news shows, The Daily Show and Last Week Tonight, attract significant interest in this market, with about 40% more demand than the still-popular Game of Thrones.
