Pastor Paul ’s Pennings

The season of Christmas is upon us again; it seems it comes sooner and sooner every year. That’s OK with me, because Christmas is my favorite time of year! Of course Christmas is about Jesus’ birth, and we celebrate by giving gifts to one another, but an even greater blessing of the season is people coming together. For some families, it is the only time each year their whole family gets together! Friends gather together and remember happy memories while making new ones. And neighbors come out of their shells, inspired to make gestures of goodwill to those who are so close, yet separated by a fence the other 364 days. I hope you’ll also take advantage of the opportunities this Christmas season to come together with your Church family and grow in God at KOG.

Coming together for Christmas is a great reminder of what’s really important in life as well as how Jesus wants us to live and this year we’re offering more opportunities to come together: join us for midweek Advent services on Dec. 4th, 11th, and 18th that will be especially fun filled reminders of the reason for the season (suppers at 5:45pm, services at 7pm). As you’re singing the carols, eating the cookies, hurriedly shopping, and going from event to event, remember the words of the Psalmist to help keep things in perspective: Psalm 35:9 “And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.”

As you come together this year at church, with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, or complete strangers, I pray that the love of Christ and gratitude for His birth would fill your hearts and lead you to be a light of joy and blessing to everyone. Look at the people that Holy Spirit brings across your path as opportunities to share His love and Good News. Pray for them and serve them in Christ’s example, and maybe your actions will be the best Christmas present someone receives this year.

Sunday, December 8, 7:00 pm Watoto Children's Home Concert

Watoto Children’s Choirs have traveled extensively since 1994, sharing a

message of hope for Africa’s most vulnerable children and women. On

almost every day of the year, the choir is performing somewhere in the

world. Hundreds of thousands of people get to meet some of Africa’s

future leaders. People see their smiles and are embraced by their hugs.

The children have the distinct privilege of telling people, “It’s possible to

have joy, to laugh and to have hope, no matter what you’re going

through.” Like Africa, the production is vibrant and colorful, taking you

on an emotional journey from utter despair to joyous celebration, as the children and women

share their personal stories of triumph in story and song. Other than coming to Africa yourself,

what better way to learn about all the good things happening in Uganda than through this

stirring, musical experience. Proceeds made from the album will help Watoto provide

vulnerable children and women with homes, education, medical care, and most of all the love

of a family.

Watoto is a family made up of people from all over the world who are working together to

ensure that the forgotten have a place to belong. In a time of civil war, we planted a local

church in Kampala, Uganda to speak hope and life to the nation. Since then, we’ve placed

thousands of orphans in families, empowered thousands of vulnerable women to reach their

communities, rescued babies and former child soldiers, and sent children’s choirs across six

continents. As we work alongside the most vulnerable in our society, our aim is to rescue

individuals and raise each one as a leader in his or her sphere of life so that, in turn, they will

rebuild the nation. In over 35 years, the challenges facing Africa have changed, but our vision

remains the same. And, in all of this, Watoto is committed to celebrating Christ and caring for

community.

Chi ldren’s & Fami ly Minis tr ies

The next 4 weeks as we approach Advent and the Christmas season, we will be learning all about Christmas traditions around the globe to highlight that Jesus came as the savior to all people, all nations, everywhere! The Children's Christmas Pro-gram, December 15, 9:30 Worship Service is called "Christmas Around the World" and will focus on Mexico, the Philippines and Germany. It is co-directed by Kathy Connors, Karissa Finley and Christine Sani. We believe this will be a powerful oppor-

tunity to learn about different traditions on how we celebrate the birth of the King of Kings no matter where in the world we are.

For December 1 & 8, we will have the children stay in service until the candle lighting and then they will be dismissed (no Children’s sermons for these two Sundays to help maximize our rehearsal time).

5th-6th Graders

The purpose of the KOG Crossover Ministry is to help our 5th and 6th graders know the one true God and give them a strong faith foundation through the study of both the Old and New Testaments. As part of the Ministry, we have periodic outside activities that provide fun and an opportunity for relationship building for the students. Our goal is to incorporate a service project into each outside activity. During September, we had a Friday evening pizza party and photographic scavenger hunt where each group of students was given a list of 20 items (e.g. a flag, the word “river”, a barrel cactus) and sent out into the neighborhood (with an adult) to find and photograph each item. Our service project for that activity was for each student to support Heifer International. Heifer International’s mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. For 75 years, they have provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. Crossover students each selected an animal and pledged to raise funds to purchase that animal. With the money the students raised

through various means such as a lemonade stand, doing household chores, or asking relatives and friends plus generous donations from the congregation, KOG raised $660 which was used to purchase the following animals for Heifer International in support of their mission: • a pig which provides a source of protein,

offspring for sale, and natural fertilizer • a goat which provides milk, cheese, and

butter • 3 flocks of geese which provide income

through the sale of goose eggs and offspring • 2 trios of rabbits which know how to multiply

quickly • 2 flocks of chicks which provide eggs • 3 hives of honeybees which provide income

through the sale of honey and beeswax and pollination for fruits and vegetable plants

• 2 baskets of hope (with chickens and rabbits) The November Crossover outside activity was rescheduled due to weather. The hike at South Mountain Park will be rescheduled for the Springtime. We appreciate your support as you give in various ways to Crossover Kids.

Preschool News

December i s Fun at KOG Preschool

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS FROM KOG PRESCHOOL!

KOG Preschool begins December with the pre-kindergarteners making fun Christmas

ornaments and items that they can use to decorate their homes. They will also learn about

patterning and make a special Christmas gift for their parents. The preschoolers will be

making fun Christmas crafts with triangles, beads and Popsicle sticks. They will also be

making a special Christmas gift for their parents.

KOG Preschool, with the wonderful participation of the preschool families, is collecting

items for Maggie’s Place. Maggie’s Place is a community that provides houses of hospitality

for expectant women who are alone or on the streets and wish to achieve their goals in a

dignified atmosphere. This is the Preschool’s holiday outreach for the Christmas season.

All of the preschool children will learn about the birth of Jesus and why Jesus is the reason

for the Christmas season. They will learn some songs about Baby Jesus and the

pre-kindergartners will perform their annual “An Angel Chorus” program for all the

preschool families. This event will be followed with a fun Christmas Cookie Reception.

The preschool staff wishes you and your family a very Merry Christmas as well as a Happy,

Blessed and Healthy New Year in 2020!

If you are new, you may not be aware of the many ways our church facility is being used by

various groups in the community. This campus is a blessing to a variety of people. There is an

AA group that meets in the KOG Center every morning. Our preschool classes meet weekdays

and the German School folks use the facility regularly. Bible study groups and exercise

workouts are other ways this church blesses those who worship here and others in our

community. Sharing and reaching out to our neighborhood and city are a part of KOG’s DNA,

and we are grateful to all of you who contribute through your giving of time and resources.

The following pages give updates on what has been given and ways to become involved.

Blood Drive

To all who participated in the blood drive held Sunday, November 17, Thank you. We

exceeded our goal, 153%!! Your participation and donation are helping to supply the many

medical centers in the Phoenix metropolitan area with blood components needed by those

who have been in trauma situations, those who have cancer, babies who are ill, and those

whose life depends on frequent transfusions.

Goodwill Drive

The Youth hosted a Goodwill contributions drive on November 9. It was a huge success, raising around $700.00 to support youth and programs at church. We had an amazing turn out of youth and Boy Scouts to help us move all the donations. Thank you for all of your donations and time.

Stitch A Smile Quilts

Over 300 quilts were made by the Stitch a Smile group this year. Meeting several times a

month, this group donates beautiful quilts to community outreach projects. Thank you.

Thank You
