KEY PROJECTS

M&E building services case study

BFES is well established as a leading player in the building services market with 70 years of trading behind them and a turnover of nearly £200 million in 2017. Pier is one of three recruitment providers to serve BFES across the UK and the lead agency for the South West and Wales. Since we built our relationship in 2014 we have directly supplied a workforce for over

199 placements to 11 separate projects, from tradesmen to technical staff. You will find a comprehensive list on the opposite page of the wide range of projects and personnel we have supplied over the past four years.

We also support BFES in sourcing suitable sub-contractors for their projects by recommending clients to tender

for MEP packages. For a 2014 project at Bath Spa University we sourced the Witney Cable Company to complete a cable pull and co-ordinated payroll to forego the unnecessary bureaucracy of processing the contract through the procurement system. More recently, we have connected BFES and a contractor who has been awarded the mechanical package for the MOD Larkhill project.

After a fire in the Dowty Propellers facility in Cheltenham, BFES were awarded the M&E contract for the re-fit of a new base in Gloucestershire with a tight deadline so that manufacturing could resume as soon as possible for the end client.

Needing to respond quickly and efficiently to ensure the personnel provided were fully qualified, we ensured strong regular contact was made with the BFES site team to ensure the relevant standards were met, providing candidates with CSCS, Asbestos Awareness and IPAF credentials and monitoring and managing the Health & Safety documents for each operative.

We successfully delivered the labour levels required, achieved all deadlines and training requirements.

DOWTY PROPELLERS

• Approximately 5 months starting May 2015.

• Disciplines supplied included foremen, quantity surveyors, electrical engineers, electricians, plumbers, pipefitters and trade mates peaking at 65 operatives.

Our M&E department has worked with BFES to source, recruit and deploy a whole range of mechanical and electrical operatives for the installation package of the Research & Development Facility in the Dyson factory at Malmesbury.

We first secured labour for the refurb of D3 & D4 factories, a project which started straight after the factory installation at Dowty Propellers. This meant we were able to provide continued employment for the majority of our workforce by transferring them to this site. All labour provided were briefed on working in a live building with Dyson employees where behaviour, tidiness and best working practices were of paramount importance.

Our operatives then went on site for D9, all labour being sourced within a 30-mile radius and vetted to ensure a high calibre of candidate with the necessary skills and previous experience on fast track commercial / industrial installation.

We also assisted BFES with an end of build clean. Drafted in to supply labourers to clean all three buildings, we instead suggested engaging a specialist cleaning partner to send a team of cleaners and suitable equipment. This ensured a high standard finish and quick turnaround. We continue to supply operatives for the D8 project and look forward to seeing the Dyson project through to its conclusion.

For clients our service ensures that the workers we are supplying, or already on site, have site cards and certification that are current and meet site-specific requirements.

We offer a renewal service for CSCS and Skills cards so we send reminders to our workers when cards are due to expire and can assist with application so clients can be assured that workers are up to date at all phases of a project.

CASE STUDY – THE WEST WING, CARDIFF

Pier Consulting was the lead supplier of labour at our project, Glossop Road student accommodation within Cardiff. The job has a £8 million M&E value with a total build value of approx. £40m. Ourselves and Pier worked closely with initial meetings to discuss the correct rates considering the duration and scope of the project. Once this was agreed Pier did not hesitate to start resourcing the appropriate labour for the difficult task ahead! As a company standard we require mandatory training prior to any form of employment and Pier took it upon themselves to make sure all their labour supplied was trained prior to attending site. Pier went above and beyond this and kept a bespoke labour file located on site up to date with relevant trade and training qualifications.

“I was approached by a company I had worked for on a past project to start work in Cardiff. My JIB card had run out so Pier booked and pre-paid for the test and ordered a new card once the certificate was received. They deducted the cost from my weekly wage on an agreed pay back instalment plan, this was managed and communicated very well via Pier. When I also enrolled with their payment company I had to produce my birth certificate which I could not find, Pier again ordered me a new certificate and passed on a copy to the payment company, whilst sending the original out in the post. All they did for me was very efficient, helpful and hassle free allowing myself to get back into work.”

Steven Townsend, Plumber

“When I was working on site for Pier I wanted to do my IPAF training. They organised for me to do the course and deducted the cost from my pay in weekly instalments. This was very useful as I did not have to pay upfront and made it more affordable for me to progress with extra training”
