Seniors volunteer time and energy to community service Bradwell Institute Wendy Green Throughout her high school ca- reer, Green volunteered 484 hours of her time to organizations such as the American Red Cross and Winn Army Community Hospital on Fort Stewart. Since June 2008, Green spent her extra time as a youth vol- unteer at Winn ACH in the phar- macy department, where she filled prescriptions and IV trays and cleared expired drugs. Through her time at Winn, she also learned how to do cultures and got experience with autopsies. In the pediatric unit, she assisted nurses and cleaned rooms. “I like to help people and make them happy,” Green said. Arieal Smith Smith volunteered a total of 417.75 hours by joining Health Oc- cupation Students of America (HO- SA) and working as an athletic trainer for the school’s football team. The senior also worked with those in nursing homes and learned how to help the elderly through her ser- vice in the nursing field. As a HOSA member, Smith helped the Coastal Manor Long Term Care Facility with its annual community Easter egg hunt and served members of the manor Thanksgiving dinner. While working as an athletic trainer, Smith frequently helped players by keeping them well-hy- drated, taping wrists and fingers and giving ice massages. “Getting your hours is very im- portant,” Smith said. “It looks won- derful on your resume. It shows that you can be a trustworthy worker if you can take time out to volunteer and give back to your community.” First Presbyterian Christian Academy Kristian Eby Eby spent many of his 143.5 community-service hours assisting in projects to support the elderly in some way. On several occasions, he packed and delivered items to Good- will. He also spent time working for the Liberty County Humane Shelter, Tri-County Protective Agency, The Wesley Methodist Center, The Homeless Shelter in Savannah and the Manna House. Eby helped reno- vate a bathroom at a local church and assisted at a local elementary school library organizing, cleaning, sorting and shelving books. He is undecided about what ma- jor and college he would like to at- tend. “While community service is a requirement for us at First Presbyte- rian, it should be done with a giving heart and a knowledge that what you do every day impacts those around you,” Eby said. “Making a difference, even in what some may feel is a small way, makes a big dif- ference to the person or group you spent time with.” Brandon Standard Standard focused his 364.5 com- munity-service hours volunteering to coach the younger athletes in the Hinesville Soccer Association. He also facilitated a soccer camp at the Liberty County Recreation Depart- ment. Standard spent another large por- tion of community service each week organizing the chapel services at FPCA. He also worked on the American Diabetes Association clay shoot and the audio visuals for pa- rade floats in the annual Hinesville Christmas parade last year. “Do all you can, for all you can, giving nothing but your absolute best in the name of the Lord,” Stan- dard said. “Finding ways to give back, to help others — whether on a small or big scale — does make a difference.” Standard plans to attend Mercer University and focus on a pharmacy track with a degree in health science and a pharmacy doctorate degree. Liberty County High School Felisha Burks Burks accumulated 370 total hours of community service through volunteering her time at Winn Army Community Hospital. She worked in various departments in the hospi- tal, stocking supplies, cleaning and entertaining the children in the pedi- atric ward. She originally started doing her community service at Winn because she thought she wanted to enter the medical field. Burks continued working at Winn during her high school years and summers as time allowed because she really enjoyed the people she worked with and her assigned duties. Burks also is an active member of LCHS’s JROTC program and the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. “The best part about volunteering is that I got to meet a bunch of new people and was able to help out,” she said. “It is important to give back to the community because it helps teach responsibility and also makes you feel better about your- self.” Burks will join the Army after graduation, and she hopes to be a pilot one day. Chelsea Mells Mells has accumulated 240 hours of community service since starting high school. All of her hours were earned volunteering at the Liberty County Recreation Department. Mells worked as a junior camp counselor at the Shuman Center, working with the 6- to 8-year-old group. She coordinated activities for the kids in camp, including orga- nized games and field trips. She chose to complete her com- munity service hours at the Shuman Center because she attended sum- mer camp there as a child and al- ways hoped to serve as a camp counselor. She believes that com- munity service gives students a chance to help their community. Mells also is a LCHS cheerleader and was named homecoming queen. She will attend college at Albany State and major in forensic science. “It is important to give back to the community because you are helping other people out who don’t have the same resources as you do,” Mells said. “My favorite part of commu- nity service was interacting with the children.” She hopes to work as a crime- scene investigator. Tide seniors prepare for graduation festivities

Mike Riddle

The 2011 Long County High School graduation ceremony will take place Friday at Veteran’s Stadium.

Long County High School’s class of 2011 will graduate at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, at Veterans Stadium in Ludowici. Before the big night, however, the seniors will enjoy a busy week of ac-tivities.

The seniors will attend the baccalaureate ceremony at 7 a.m. Sunday, May 8, in the high school gym, where they will show off their caps and gowns for classmates and guests.

The seniors will meet for breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Tues-day, May 10, to rehash old memories and talk about the upcoming weekend. After the meal, graduation prac-tice will be from 10-11:30 a.m.

Graduation practice also is scheduled for 9-11 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 11; 9 a.m. until around noon Thursday, May 12; and 9 a.m. Friday, May 13.

Seniors should meet by 6:15 p.m. Friday, May 13, at the Smiley Elementary School gym to make their fi-nal preparations. The gradu-ation ceremony begins at 8 p.m.

The attire for boys is

graduation cap and gown, black pants, white dress shirt, dark tie, black socks and black shoes. Girls should wear their gradua-tion caps and gowns, white or pastel (i.e., pale yellow, pale blue, etc.) dresses with no print or designs, light flesh-colored panty-hose and white pumps. The dresses should not be lon-ger than the gowns. Girls should not wear sandals, open-toed shoes or open-back shoes.

If the weather is bad Fri-day night, the ceremony will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Veterans Stadium. If the weather is bad Saturday morning, the ceremony will be postponed to 8 p.m.

Graduating seniors are encouraged to invite fam-ily and friends to be a part of this once-in-a-life event, but all guests must remain behind the fence until the ceremony is over. Audience members will be allowed to take photographs from this area. Only authorized staff and graduating seniors will be allowed on the field dur-ing the ceremony.

For more information on the 2011 Long County High School graduation ceremo-ny, call 545-2135.

Top graduating seniors reflect on goals, inspirations

Each year, Long County High School recognizes its top three graduating seniors during the graduation cer-emony. This year, the top students are Rochelle Leigh Cote, Angel Marie Dennison and Rhachyl Marie King. Here’s what the high-achiev-ing teens had to say about finishing high school, climb-ing the career ladder and what inspires them most:

Angel Marie Dennison1. How do you feel about

graduating? I feel like I ac-complished something great and I’m excited that I am

going off to college (at the University of Georgia) in the fall.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment? I guess being selected as the STAR Student.

3. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Practic-ing psychiatry in a large city somewhere.

4. Where do you see your-self in 25 years? Having my own psychiatric practice and a family. I want two boys and two girls.

5. What do you want to accomplish in your life? I want to be a good role model for my brothers (Chris, 16; Jordon, 16; and Tzion, 4) and sister (Trinitee, 6).

6. Who is the person that you most admire? Jesus Christ — He was the most perfect person ever to walk the earth, and I value my re-lationship with Him.

7. What teacher has had the most influence on you? Mrs. Lester — when I didn’t understand something, she would help me understand it without making me feel dumb. As a teacher, she al-ways goes out of her way to help students.

8. What advice would you give to a new Blue Tide freshman? Never give up on school, try hard and have determination and persever-ance.

Rochelle Leigh Cote1. How do you feel about

graduating? I can’t believe it actually is happening; no words can express my feel-ings. I have a mixture of feel-ings; I’m sad that I’m leaving my friends, but I’m excited about moving on and seeing what life has to offer.

2. What is your greatest accomplishment up to this point in your life? Making it this far (in high school) after

doubting myself and (wheth-er) I would actually make it (to graduation).

3. Where do you see your-self in 10 years? I see myself with a teaching job, probably in Long County, and being a math teacher. I like it here, and if I come back here, at least I know what to expect.

4. Where do you see your-self in 25 years? Still teach-ing, but with a family — a small family — a husband and two kids, one of each.

5. What do you want to accomplish in life? I just want to keep doing what I’m doing and not let anybody stop me from that. When I’m gone and people look back and talk about me, I want them to say, “She was a good example to others.”

6. Who is the person you most admire? My grandpa (John Sabo) — he put all of his time and effort into build-ing things for us. He built a cradle, a high chair for my dolls, cars for the boys. He could build anything, and he always showed how much he cared for us.

7. What teacher has had the most influence on you? Well, there are two — Mr. (Keith)

DeMartini (Walker Middle School eighth-grade lan-guage-arts teacher) and Mrs. (Sherry) Lester. Mr. DeMarti-ni put in extra time with us to help prepare us for the ninth grade and our (high school) writing test. Mrs. Lester, she is just a really good teacher. If we didn’t understand some-

thing, she could put it in a way that made it clear to us.

8. What advice would you give to a new Blue Tide freshman? Don’t give your teachers a hard time and do your best, or you will face consequences.

Rhachyl Marie King1. How do you feel about graduat-

ing? I’m excited that I accomplished it, but now I’m excited about going farther.

2. What is your greatest accom-plishment? Being accepted to the college that I chose, Georgia State University, where I’m majoring in biology.

3. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still furthering my education in medical school. I plan on being an obstetrician and gynecologist.

4. Where do you see yourself in 25 years? I still see myself working and ending up wherever I end up, but I also plan on having a family by then with five boys and one girl.

5. What do you want to accomplish in life? I want to be happy, have good memories and be a fulfilled person. I also hope that others see this in me.

6. Who is the person that you most admire? Dr. (Dolores) Mallard (for-mer teacher and principal at Long County High School) — she seemed like she was always going in the right direction. She also was at all of the student activities, showed support for everyone and always was ready to help you when you needed help.

7. What teacher has had the most influence on you? Mrs. Lester — she is a very good teacher who makes sure that you know what you need to know. She also always maintained her class well and had a confidence in herself. One thing that she also did was made you feel like she came to work just for you.

8. What advice would you give to a new Blue Tide freshman? Come to school to learn; don’t worry about all of that other stuff; like how you look today; come here to learn; oh, and also be respectful to the teachers.

For students and parents who attend the Long County gradua-tion ceremony Friday, it will be a special night; but for Seth Gold-en’s family, it will be very special because it wasn’t ever supposed to take place. In 1995, 3-year-old Golden was diagnosed with grade 3 astrocytoma cancer His family was told that it was inoperable and that he wouldn’t live for more than six months.

“I was devastated; it was like my life ended,” Seth Golden’s mother, Paula Golden, said.

Besides being devastated by the news, his mother also was surprised. Just months earlier, he was like any other toddler, run-ning in all different directions. But in March 1995, the youngster had the first of what eventually would be thousands of seizures.

After the first seizure, Golden went to the hospital and received several different tests. From the tests, the doctors discovered that Golden had a tumor on his brain, which they later determined was cancer. After the cancer diagno-sis, he went through a strenuous cycle of chemotherapy, which continued into the next year. As the future Blue Tide senior re-ceived treatments, his family never gave up hope.

Golden’s parents also began taking him to see different doctors to seek other opinions. During that time, he was seen by doctors from Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, the Scottish Rite Chil-dren’s Hospital in Atlanta, Duke Medical Center in North Carolina and the Hermann Children’s Hos-pital in Texas.

While going through difficult times, Golden proved doctors wrong by living longer than six months. Six months turned into seven months; seven months turned into a year; and then a year turned into a year and a half.

Golden faced a grim downturn in February 1997, when he had brain surgery to remove his tem-poral lobe and part of the tumor. After the surgery, his seizures in-creased dramatically.

“From the time he had the sur-gery through 1999, he had nearly 4,000 seizures. In 1998 alone, he had over 1,300,” his mother said.

During that time, Golden re-quired 24-hour care, which his mother provided most of the time.

In February 2000, Golden had another dangerous surgery — the remaining part of his tumor was taken out. Then he had a stroke, which left him completely para-lyzed on his right side and unable to speak. After the surgery, he was in an intensive-care unit for more than a month.

Even though this time was dif-ficult for Golden and his family, it also was the turning point in his life. Once he was stable, he began making his comeback with in-tensive occupational, speech and physical therapy. From that point on, Golden never looked back.

He hasn’t had a seizure since then, and even though he still is paralyzed on his right side, he will make his graduation walk Friday night just like all of the other Blue Tide seniors.

When he graduates Friday, one fellow student who will be in the audience watching is his younger brother, sophomore Luke Gold-en.

“I am very proud of my broth-er’s determination to work hard in school to do what he needs to do to graduate. He respects mom and dad, which has influ-enced me to do the same,” Luke Golden said.

“He has never let his disability hinder him or hold him back, like it would most people. He has nev-er made the excuse that ‘I can’t do something.’ I am extremely proud of him.”

Looking back on what hap-pened with her son, Paula Golden said it is difficult to comprehend.

“Now, he is doing so good that it is hard to imagine what we went through. He amazes me with what he can do, and all with only one hand,” she said.

The graduating senior’s father, David Golden, believes there is a special purpose for his son in the future.

“Seth is a miracle, and the Lord has a special purpose for Seth,” he said.
