Andrew Kepler received his Master’s of Architecture degree from the University of Maryland School of Architec-ture, Planning and Preserva-tion, where he also served as Curator of the University’s Architecture Gallery. He also

holds a B.A. in Art History from Hunter College in New York, where he specialized in Northern Renais-sance painting. Andrew trained for ten years at an award-winning international architecture and design firm in New York. Since founding his own firm in 2006, Andrew has been in demand as both an archi-

tect and interior designer, and now has a growing business of custom-designed furniture. Enhanced by his knowledge of art history and his interest in historic preservation, his design philosophy finds its roots in classicism; however, he believes in ap-proaching his projects with a clean sophistication that makes them at once modern and timeless. A Nebraska native, Andrew is also a classical pianist and a lover of opera, and has traveled extensively on architecturally- and archaeologically-related trips in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Morocco and Mexico (espe-cially Yucatán). He is accompanied by his partner, Carlos Picón, a well-known museum curator.

SArAh MorriS is a classicist and archaeologist in UCLA’s Department of Classics and its Cotsen Institute of Archaeol-ogy. She earned her doctorate in classics at Harvard and taught at Yale before joining the UCLA faculty in 1989.

She was named Steinmetz Professor of Classical Ar-chaeology and Material Culture in 2001 and special-izes in research on Bronze Age Greece, Homer and the Near East. A practicing field archaeologist, she has excavated in Israel, Turkey and Greece, and is currently engaged in a new project in Albania.

John pApAdopouloS is professor of classics and archaeology and chairs the UCLA Department of Classics, where he has taught since 2002. He received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from the University of Sydney. He has written or edited eight books and more than 70 articles on archaeology and cultural history of the Mediter-ranean. Papadopoulos has worked on and directed excavations in Greece, Italy, Albania and Australia. He has published on the Greek colonies of the Ital-ian peninsula, the cultural history and topography of Athens and archaeology of the Aegean.

Unique Highlights

Dear Traveler,

Enshrined in the art and architecture of the Mediterranean are the legends of classical history that shaped western civilization. On this splendid cultural odyssey we invite you to discover such seminal destinations as Paestum and Syracuse, Athens and Santorini, Ephesus and Pergamon. Along the way we will enjoy privileged access to events and attractions that are off-limits to the public, including a palace reception hosted by a Sicilian baron and a special dinner in the courtyard of the majestic Library of Celsus in fabled Ephesus.

Far from an ordinary cruise, this is a rare opportunity to explore the region’s historic ancient sites with leading archaeologists and preservationists. At the Acropolis of Athens and on the island of Santorini, you’ll enjoy the insights of our guest lecturers, Professors John Papadopoulos, an expert in the history and culture of ancient Greece, and Sarah Morris, an experienced field archae-ologist. At Ephesus we’ve arranged for a private guide to take you behind the scenes, giving you access to the latest excavations and restorations of this mag-nificent site. Illuminating the connection between the architecture of the clas-sical world and the present will be Andrew Kepler, a New York-based architect who will accompany us throughout the journey.

In conjunction with this unforgettable cruise, we are pleased to offer two optional extensions. Prior to embarkation, you may spend two art-packed days in Rome, including visits to the Centrale Montemartini sculpture museum, Nero’s Domus Aurea and Ostia Antica, the ancient port city of Rome. We will also savor a private visit and dinner at a 17th-century palace, Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, and meet with archaeologists and preservationists about Rome’s makeover plans. And following the cruise, you may elect to prolong the adventure for one night in Istanbul. Here we will tour famed Hagia Sophia, the Sulemaniye Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, in addition to enjoying a private dinner cruise along the Bosphorus to and from the exclusive pier of the Ciragan Palace Hotel.

Our ship is as splendid as our itinerary. Corinthian II is a deluxe yacht that accommodates only 114 guests in 57 suites. This lovely small cruise ship is spacious, exquisitely furnished and offers broad, comfortable decks for sun-ning and taking in the passing scene. At once large enough to offer all the amenities of a large cruise ship, such as a spacious restaurant, two comfortable lounges and a sun deck with a Jacuzzi, she is small enough to navigate tiny inlets and berth in exclusive harbors.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard this extraordinary Mediterranean passage.

Sincerely,

Margaret M. BetchartPresident, Betchart Expeditions Inc.For AAAS Travels and Sigma Xi Expeditions

SeptembeR 30 - OctobeR 3, 2008 Please note: You fly from the U.S. on Sept. 30.

Discover the “Eternal City” of Rome, in-cluding the Centrale Montemartini, built in 1912 as Rome’s first public electrical plant, now beautifully restored as a museum hous-ing over 400 classical sculptures, and a tour of Rome’s ancient monuments, concentrat-ing mostly on recently-made discoveries and restoration of sites. Witness restoration and conservation techniques on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Domus Aurea (the Golden House of Nero), adjacent to the Colosseum. Also travel outside of Rome for a visit to Ostia Antica, ancient Rome’s port city, beautifully set under a canopy of cypresses and pines. Probably founded in the 4th century b.c., the ruins of Ostia Antica give an excellent idea of Roman domestic and commercial archi-tecture as well as of urban life of the period. Excavations began in the 19th century and continue to the present; it is believed that as of now about two-thirds of the ancient city have been excavated. In addition to explor-ing the site, we will visit the Museum, housed in a building dating from 1500. Across the street from Ostia Antica is the medieval settlement, a fortified village founded in 830. After enjoying lunch at the site, drive to the port of Civitavecchia to board Corinthian II. This optional extension also features a pri-vate dinner at the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, a 17th-century palace belonging to the Doria Pamphilj, one of Rome’s most notable fami-lies, and a meeting with archaeologists and preservationists to discuss current preserva-tion plans of this ancient city as well as the challenges they face.

An Honest Discussion About Fuel CostsIn the uncertain, often volatile oil market of late, it is difficult—if not impossible—to predict fuel costs over the long term, and, more specifically, at the time of operation of this voyage. Our prices are based upon the prevailing fuel rates at the time of brochure printing (usually nine months before departure). While we will do everything possible to maintain our prices, if the fuel rates increase significantly, it may be necessary to institute a fuel surcharge. If one is nec-essary, the total surcharge for your voyage will not exceed $180 per person. Thank you for your understanding.
