Formations: At Mainstream, you worked in lines, waves, columns, and other nicely connected formations. At Pluswe added diamonds. At Advanced, hourglasses. At C1,you’ll get to dance in several exotic new formations, including galaxies, blocks, butterflies, and O’s.
Concepts: At MS and Plus, you learned a call and youdid the call. At Advanced, you learned that you coulddo calls “as couples”, and you learned that “All FourCouples” could do calls normally done with twocouples. At C1, you’ll learn to do calls in all kinds ofways: in tandem, Siamese, T-boned, with imaginarydancers, and more!
Calls: At this point, you know how to learn new calls;you’ve already learned a couple of hundred. The callsat C1 are not any harder than the calls you’ve alreadylearned (well, a few are a little tricky). There are justmore of them. Will your brain overload? It might feel alittle congested at times, but give yourself some time, and all those neural connections will snap into place.
Call Modifications: This is where C1 really starts to workyour brain. At Advanced, a caller might occasionally saysomething like “Chain Reaction, but turn the star 1/2”. At C1, your ability to listen and modify calls on the flygets tested further. How about remake the wave, butinterrupt after each part (parts? what parts? we need toremember that definition!) with an in-roll circulate. Yikes! We’ll save the hard stuff for later, after we’ve learned thecalls, formations, and concepts, but be aware that youneed to know those definitions.
C1 Notes Kris JensenFall 2001
Handouts, we love handouts. I don’t know whether these will be useful or not, butwe’ll give them a try and see whether some written notes help.My plan is to go fairly slowly. As we learn more calls, it will be hard (read impossible)to use them all every week. But we’ll have some weeks where we’ll focus on reviewrather than new calls. Be sure to let me know if you have questions or want to reviewa particular call or concept. Here’s a preview of what’s new at C1:

One tricky place in Squarethe Bases is when the EndsPass Thru, they often wantto do a right pull by, whenthen makes them want tostart with the left for theSplit Square Thru 2. Someend dancers remindthemselves not to usehands by saying “Don’ttouch me!” to the firstdancer they pass. They thensay “Touch me!” to thesecond dancer they meet(the one they start theSplit Square Thru 2 with)and “Don’t touch me!” tothe dancer they pass on theTrade By (who happens tobe the same dancer theydidn’t touch the first time!

Tag Back to a WaveStarting Formation: Any line or waveDefinition: 1/2 Tag and Scoot Back. This call cannot befractionalized.Ending formation: Right Hand Mini-wave Box
Start After 1/2 Tag Finish
Gay Alert! Ramblecontains the dreadedslide thru! Remember, ifyou are dancing boy, youwill always quarter right(after passing thru),which means that yourright hand will be towardsthe other person. If youare dancing girl, you willalways quarter left, whichmeans that your lefthand will be towards theother person. If two boysslide thru, they will be ina right-hand mini-wave. Iftwo girls slide thru, theywill be in a left-hand mini-wave. If a boy and a girlslide thru, they will alwaysend in a normal (boy onthe left, girl on the right)couple.
Scoot and RambleStarting Formation: 1/4 TagDefinition: Scoot Back, then RambleEnding Formation: Depends on the gender arrangementof the beginning formation
Here we have two callsusing scoot back (andthere are more to come). In one, the first part is aScoot Back (and the calluses the first word(“Scoot”). In the other, thelast part is a Scoot Back, and the call name usesthe second word (“Back”).Is this significant? Unlikely, but maybe it will help as amnemonic.

Formation: BlocksA block is a 4x4 matrix in which no 2 real bodies have areal body between them. There is 1 space between allbodies in a block: in front, in back, left and right.
Identifier: Beau/BelleIn a couple, the dancer on the left is the “Beau” and thedancer on the right is the “Belle”. In other formations, each dancer whose partner is to his right is a Beau, andeach dancer whose partner is to his left is a Belle.
Beau Belle BelleBelle BeauBeau
Beau BelleBelle Beau
BeauBelleBelleBeau
What’s hard aboutBlocks? For the firsttime, you’re working“disconnected”, in asomewhat abstractformation. The trickyparts are keeping trackof who’s in your Block(remember, there arefolks in the other Blockdancing at the sametime) and re-establishingyour Block when the callis completed.Experienced dancers doa lot of pointing (it’s notrude here!) and make alot of eye contact. Assoon as the callerindicates that you’re ina Block, use both handsand point at the twopeople who are nearestto you in your Block. Don’tturn your body (you don’twant to forget yourfacing direction); ifsomeone is behind you, hold your hand behindyour back to point.
If you’re partner is to yourRight, you’re a Beau; ifyour partner is to yourLeft, you’re a Belle.
If you’re in a RH mini-wave,you’re both Beaus. Ifyou’re in a LH mini-wave,you’re both Belles.
In blocks you can do only 4-person calls (or sequencesof calls) that start and end in a 2x2 formation. e.g. PartnerTrade, Partner Tag, Pass Thru, Touch 1⁄4, Star Thru,Square Thru, Wheel Thru, etc. When doing a call in ablock, each dancer works only with the dancers in hisblock; all block calls start and end on the same 4 spotson the floor.
The shaded dancers work together and the unshadeddancers work together.

In summary:• Only 4 person calls can bedone in Blocks.• Only calls that start andend in a 2x2 formation canbe done in Blocks.• You never work with thedancers in the other Block.• At the end of each call (or,sometimes, a combinationof calls), you will end up onone of the original spots inyour original Block. However, you could be facing any wall.

C1 Notes:6More on BlocksFor simple calls, you can stay in the block footprints asyou execute each part of the call. Simple calls (like Touch1/4 or Square Thru) do not require that dancers interactwith more than one dancer at a time. For more complex calls, start the call on the footprintsof the block. When it becomes necessary to interact withmore than one dancer at a time, the dancers closest tothe center should move outside to join the other dancersin their block. After completing the call, the appropriatedancers must move to reestablish the block footprints. In other words, when necessary, remove the interlockedaspect of the Block formation, complete the call, andthen re-create the interlocking blocks. The hardest part is re-establishing your Block formationafter you’ve taken it apart. As the caller says “In yourBlocks,” notice the DIAGONAL. This is a 4-persondiagonal line that cuts through both Blocks and containstwo dancers from each Block.
At the ASDC, you couldthink about the diagonalgoing towards the dividerwall or the outside door.
Caller
This diagonal will always slant in one of the twodirections shown above and that slant will remain thesame once the Blocks are established. So, notice thediagonal’s slant when you form Blocks, and then makesure that the diagonal has the same slant when you re-establish the Blocks after a complicated call. Not alldancers will need to move to re-establish the blocks;typically four or six dancers need to move.

When you do a Trail Off, theBelle should sashay in frontof the Beau. This will resultin the dancers passing leftshoulders as they Trail Off.
So, the end dancers shouldpass left shoulders duringthe second part of Pass TheAxle. End of story.
However, you will find dancers(even in the Wilde Bunch…)who want to pass rightshoulders (so that the movefeels like a partner trade).Should you stop the flow ofthe dance to correct them?Should you run into them? Orshould you go ahead andpass right shoulders, whileinternally patting yourself onthe back because you knowthat left is right?
If, perchance, you get into thehabit of passing rightshoulders, and you seesomeone coming at you witha hand on his/her leftshoulder, it means they feelstrongly about the issue andyou’d be well-advised to passleft shoulders.

We’re going to use thealternative definition to learnthis call. I checked with someChallenge callers andteachers, and many are usingthis definition. I like it betterbecause it doesn’t force youto remember two separateparts of the call dependingon whether you’re a beau ora belle.
The important things toremember about thealternative definition is that(a) Shakedown doesn’t havefractionalizable parts and (b)you do the call “no-hands.”That way, you can do the callwith anybody, regardless ofwhich definition they’re using.

Some typical places phantoms might appear:

;;;;;;;;
If you do your math (3 setups, each consisting of 4spots), or count the spots, you’ll realize that thisformation requires 12 dancers. Poof! As soon as thecaller says “Triple Boxes,” 4 phantom dancers appearout of nowhere. As soon as the caller neglects to prefixa call with the Triple Box incantation, the phantomsdisappear into the ether from which they came.
When the caller tells you you’re in Triple Boxes, youshould immediately identify the group of 4 (dancers orphantoms) you’re in. Just as with Blocks, you’ll workwith only the dancers/phantoms in that group. If you’rein the center group, you can breathe a sight of reliefbecause usually (but not always) the phantoms are inthe outer 2 groups of 4.Do the call in your 2x2 formation, working with thereal dancer(s) and phantom(s) as necessary.

Dancing with phantoms: Ithelps to make the phantomsas real as you can. If you’resupposed to touch a quarterwith a phantom, reach outand pretend to touchsomeone. It looks silly, but I’vefound that using the correctarm and hand moves helpsmy body move correctly.
Be sure to remember to leavespaces for the phantoms.Dancing with phantomsrequires precise positioning;you can’t rely on a friendlyphantom hand to reach outand put you in the right place, but you’ll definitely be in thewrong place if you don’t allowfor those pesky ephemeralphantom bodies.

All of the definitions in thesenotes are official CALLERLABdefinitions, straight off theWWW. Frankly, I sometimesthink they leave a little to bedesired. In this call, forexample, its wording makes itseem like the step to a waveis part of the second part ofthe call; it makes more senseto think about it as part ofthe first part. With the Phantom concept,we have interlocking groups(as with Blocks), where eachdancer works only with theother dancers in her group. The difference is that withBlocks, all the dancers arereal. With the Phantomconcept, we work with 8-person groups, but only 4 outof the 8 are real, live dancers;the rest are those alwaysperfect phantoms.
So now you have to bothignore (yet not run into) thereal dancers who aren't inyour group and work with theunreal dancers who are inyour group.
Concept: PhantomA Phantom is a non-existent dancer with whom youmay be asked to work. A Phantom formation (e.g., afterHeads Wheel Thru, Swing Thru, Heads Hinge) has thedancers arranged as shown below. Some of the dancersare in lines at the head, and some are in lines at theside. Any call which can be done from parallel generalcolumns (columns, double pass thru, etc.), and whichends in general lines or columns, can be done from abutterfly. The dancers act as though the ends were closetogether; however, they end on the original 8 spots onthe floor. The ending formation is always the same asthough the ends stepped together, everyone did thecall, and the ends slid apart again -- the same eightspots on the floor are occupied at the end of the call aswhen it began.

A Butterfly is a distortedformation, in that you docalls as if you were in anormal column-typeformation, but move todistorted footprints.
For simple calls, just movedirectly to the distortedfootprints. For morecomplicated calls, it’s a goodidea to take the distortionout, do the call, and thenmove to the Butterflyfootprints.

Linear Action is yet anothercall that “finishes like aChain Reaction.” (And yes, there are still more that wehaven’t seen yet!) Mymnemonic for Linear Actionis that it’s the only one thatstarts with a Hinge(remember Linear Cycle:“hinge, fold, follow, peel!”)

The tricky part with Trianglesis identifying your workinggroup. When you spot yourTriangle, you can stick yourhand into the center of theTriangle or point or make eye-contact with the othermembers of your Triangle—anything to identify yourgroup of 3.Since there are 8 dancers, but only 6 who can be involvedin a given pair of Triangles, itsometimes helps if the 2 whoaren’t in the Triangles dosomething to indicate theirnon-involvement.
Since formations caninclude both tandem- andwave-based Triangles, it'simportant to be able toquickly spot those set-ups.Also note that the 2dancers in the Triangle’sbase don’t need to be closetogether

So, for Challengedancers, there’s almost nopoint in calling it, unless thecaller has something else inmind (like “Swing and Circle, but interrupt after eachpart with a Ping PongCirculate” or something funlike that).

The tricky part of theStretch concept is dancingit. You can always do the callin your own group of 4 andthen have the centers dowhat they need to do to moveaway from the people theydid the call with. But thiswould often involve backingup and possibly backing intoother dancers who are alsobacking up. So it’s usuallybetter for the centers to goto the far center spot atsome point during the call, when it can be done relativelysmoothly. Unfortunately, theoptimal time for doing thisvaries depending on theparticular call (although it’susually toward the end of thecall). So right now, it’s importantto get the concept; you’ll getthe traffic patterns as youget more floor time.

Regroup is almost alwaysdone from formations withthe ends facing out. You’ll seewhy if you ever dance it asan end facing in: the bodyflow from the Quarter Out tothe Trade is lousy.
If you’re the center in aRegroup, just think “Tradeand Roll” and breathe a sighof relief.
Formation: Magic ColumnA Magic Column consists of the ends of one columnand the centers of the other column. The dancers act asthough they were in a column together, beginning andending on those four spots.
The gray dancers act as if they’re in the samecolumn and the white dancers act as if they’re inthe same column.

Hint: follow a back. Thatworks as long as you’re doinga Magic Column Circulatefrom a Magic Column (whichis most of the time at C1).
If an end and a center are facing each other, they passusing the end’s inside shoulder (the center dancer movesfirst). This takes the place of the right-shoulder rule. SoMagic Column Circulate 1-1/2 would end like so:

Concept: Magic Column ConceptFrom any column-type formation: Do the call as usual, but if you move from end to center or center to end, follow the Magic Column Circulate path. Note that asingle magic column is neither right- nor left-handed.You must follow the Magic traffic pattern, and performany action using the hand appropriate to your positionat that point in the call. If you leave the circulate path(e.g., in Magic Column Transfer, shown below), justfinish the call as usual.
StartAfter Magic Transferand Nothing
After centers CastOff 3/4 and Extend
The #4 dancers in each Magic Column (dancers 1 and 8) havethe hard part: they have remember to follow the MagicCirculate path as they change from an End to a Center. Butthe #2 dancers in each column (7 and 2) are zipping in frontof them as they follow the #1 dancers (4 and 5) out of theMagic Column, so the #4’s sometimes get a little lost. The#3 dancers (3 and 6) can help by doing their part rock-solidly. They remain a Center, so they don’t have to worryabout the Magic stuff. The Center dancers also have to be sure to establish thecorrect handhold with the outside dancers (whichever handthey did the Cast Off 3/4 with).
In the case of Magic Column Walk and Dodge, the rulesare the same: Those who are doing the Walk follow thecirculate path, and those doing the Dodge (and thusleaving the circulate path) just slide sideways as usual:
Start After Magic ColumnWalk and Dodge
qxcrbyu,

To me, the Magic Columnconcept encompasses twoideas:
• the first (and the one we’remost likely to use at C1) isto take calls that we’re usedto doing in a regular columnand do them in a MagicColumn: Magic Transfer theColumn, Magic Walk andDodge, etc.
• the second is to do callsfollowing the Magic Circulatepath even if we don’t startin a Magic Column. Thisaffects centers as theybecome ends, and ends asthey become centers. Forexample, consider a MagicPass Thru from a regularEight Chain Thru formation.(Did you get it? It’s the sameas a Cross Trail Thru.) Thisuse of the Magic Columnconcept is not commonlyseen at C1.

First, did you know thatRecycle (from a Wave) has acompletely differentdefinition in Challengedancing? Yup: Take thedefinition of 2/3 Recycle andadd a Quarter In.
Second, if you actually do aCenters Fold and adjust toa Box and then everybodyBox Counter Rotate, it’s anawkward move. So the partsare blended into onemovement.
Third, there’s a cheatdefinition that’s much easierto recite and dance: Hinge,Box Circulate. Out in the realworld, I’ve found that mostdancers seem to dance thecall this way. But it is acheat!

C1 Notes:52Concept: ConcentricStarting Formation: Any appropriate (half the dancersmust be centers and half must be outsides)Definition: The centers do the call in their group, whilethe outsides work with each other and do the call aroundthe outside. The following diagrams show who workswith whom on a Concentric call:
This is probably the mostcomplex C1 concept. Butdon’t let that scareyou…half the time, you’ll bein the center and you won’teven have to worry about it(except to avoid gettingmixed up with those poorbeleaguered ends).
Okay, outside dancers:everybody agrees you havethe hard part. First, you haveto figure out who you’reworking with. That’s usuallyfairly obvious. Then you haveto do the call. You’ve hadpractice doing calls withdancers who are notadjacent (rememberBlocks?) so that’s not toobad. Then you have to figureout where to end up. That’swhere things getcomplicated, and you’llactually need to memorizesome rules. Aaargh!!
The last two formations shown are really the same; theone on the left is used if the caller only says“Concentric...” or the Concentric call doesn’t start indiamonds. The one on the right is used when the callersays “Concentric Diamond, ...” or when the Concentriccall can only be done from diamonds (e.g., ConcentricDiamond Circulate).

If the Concentric call is being done from general linesor general columns, and the call starts and ends in a2x2 box (e.g., Concentric Star Thru), the following ruleapplies: If the ends begin as though in columns, theyfinish as though in columns; if they begin in lines, theyfinish in lines. e.g., Concentric Star Thru:

Joe Uebelacker has anotherrule when going from a tidalset-up to a 2x2. First, henotes that after changingto a 2x2, the dancers caneither be in lines or columns. Then he gives a rule todetermine whether youshould be in a line or acolumn:
Before starting the call, notewhether you’re facing a headwall or a side wall. If you’refacing the same kind of wallwhen you finish the call, youshould be in a column-typeof formation. If you’re facinga different kind of wall, youshould be in a line-type offormation.
This actually gives the sameresult as the “change thelong axis” rule, but it may bea little more concrete forsome people.

I think Chain Reaction wasdesigned to torture C1 dancers. You’re comfortable dancing itfrom one formation and now it’sno longer a “comfort” call—it’sone where you have to danceprecisely and pay strict attentionto the definition.
Teamwork is important on thiscall. If you’re the outside dancerwho is not involved in the firstPass Thru, don’t move untilsomeone shows up next to youfor the Hinge. Many breakdownsare caused by that outsidedancer moving too soon and
Old Call: Chain ReactionStarting Formation: Generalized Quarter TagDefinition: The very centers Pass Thru with the dancersthey are facing, while the ends of the center line/wavePromenade 1/4 around the outside of the set. Hinge: can be an Arm Turn 1/4 ora Partner HingeTrade: can be an Arm Turn 1/2 ora Partner TradeCast Off 3/4: Can be an ArmTurn 3/4 or a Push Cast.

In a Jaywalk, you can befacing directly (like with aPass Thru), on the diagonal,or with a 90 degreedifference. Always pass rightshoulders. Move to thefootprints of the danceryou’re working with and facethe opposite of thatdancer’s original facingdirection.
Point (or at least make eyecontact) with the danceryou’re Jaywalking with (youdon’t want to Jaywalk withsomeone who’s notJaywalking with you!)

You’re already used to doingthis call; it’s part of The Axle.
And, as with The Axle, somedancers want to pass rightshoulders and others wantto pass left shoulders. Leftis correct, but I wouldn’tbreak down a square forcinganother dancer to do it“right”.

This call is similar to Stepand Fold. Vic Ceder pointsout that in this call, theFlippers always end upholding hands with eachother. From a wave, Step andFold results in a Mini-wavebox, while Step and Flip endsin a Z.
