SUPPORT SYSTEMAt Sprott Shaw, we take pride in offering an

educational experience that’s truly supportive.

That means giving you the advice you need to be

successful even before you enroll. Our one-on-one

advising will be your first glimpse of the continual

support you’ll receive from our staff before, during,

and after your program. Should you ever need to

advance your industry qualifications down the road,

you can enroll in our lifetime refresher training. If you

have the drive to succeed, we’ll gladly assist you in

gaining the tools to do so.

ADAPTING TO YOUIf our long and storied history has taught us one thing,

it’s the importance of being able to adapt at all times.

That’s why our programs and courses are designed

to be dynamic and flexible, just like your lifestyle. Our

rolling program start dates ensure there are no waiting

lists for most programs, which makes it easy for you

to learn what you want when you want to learn it.

Whether you’re interested in full-time or part-time,

there’s a study option to suit your schedule; in fact

there are over 100 programs in 12 locations to choose

from. When you’re finished school, our career advisors

and intensive job search assistance programs will

ensure you get the best possible start to your career.

EDUCATION ROOTS THAT RUN DEEPA long time ago our founders Robert James Sprott

and William Henry Shaw had a vision. They wanted

to create a college offering the right programs to

meet the needs of the current economy and broader

community; programs that provided students with

relevant skills for meaningful jobs in high growth

industries. Over 100 years later that’s still exactly

what Sprott Shaw provides.

Sprott Shaw offers a different option beyond what is

currently expected of the private and public sectors

within the educational system. We offer accredited,

relevant, respected education, and training delivered

in a modern way. Also, our size and history sets us

apart from other private institutions.

LEARNING WITH PURPOSE

What made you choose Sprott Shaw to

complete your Practical Nursing program?

After I graduated from the Health Care

Assistant program, my employers were really

impressed with my education and the skills I

had developed at Sprott Shaw. Since my fi rst

experience was so successful, it was easy to

choose Sprott Shaw for my next career move.

How did your classes fi t with your daily

schedule?

It worked out well. I had my work schedule

and my school schedule, which all had

to come together. It would have been a

nightmare if it weren’t for my advisor, Ursula.

What made you decide to get more

education?

A lot has changed since I graduated from high

school in 1982. I felt that to be able to compete

in an environment where people ten years

younger seem to have the advantage, I had to

go back to school to contemporize my skill-set.

Also, I realized that being in fi nance was not

who I was and I desperately needed a career

change to be able to follow my passion.

How did you fi nd the Sprott Shaw experience?

I felt very at home at Sprott Shaw. The small

class sizes made the learning process very

personalized. It is not as intimidating as being

in a class with hundreds. It’s defi nitely more

hands on as well.

What was the admissions process

like for you?

The whole process was very straightforward.

They helped me get my student loans

approved and we went over it step-by-step

to iron out all the important details.

Did you know what program you wanted

to take before you decided to upgrade

your education?

I actually fi rst envisioned myself teaching

high-school literature. But after working

with the advisors to gauge my skills,

personality, and interests, they helped me

realize what I really wanted. They helped me

achieve my goals and showed a spectacular

amount of encouragement; without Sprott

How did you fi nd the admissions process?

The admissions process was really smooth and

easy. I exchanged a few emails with the people

at Sprott Shaw and they arranged a campus

visit and tour for me. I met with some of the

faculty and saw the equipment—I was really

impressed.

What would you tell someone who was

looking into Sprott Shaw?

Sprott Shaw can help you get precisely what

you need to enter your specifi c trade. If you

know what you want, Sprott Shaw can get

you there. I’d recommend it to anybody who

is looking to genuinely learn and re-enter the

work force quickly.

How was the faculty?

They make you feel like you belong. They are just

excellent and the kind of support I got from them

was absolutely amazing. Even after I graduated

they supported me by helping me kick-start my

fi rst business.

Did you know what program you wanted to take

before you decided to upgrade your education?

No, I knew I wanted to start my own business,

but I didn’t know how to go about it. The advisors

assessed my future goals and aspirations,

and advised me to combine the business

administration course with one in tourism. After I

graduated, they provided me with a tremendous

amount of support, even going so far as helping

me with my communication strategy. Without

that support I would never have been able to

start my own business.

Pay and Benefits Administrator

Pay Administrator

Payroll Officer

Employment in this occupational group is projected to

increase in the next few years. This is a great time to enter

this field because many jobs will become available due to a

high level of retiring workers now through 2015.

Entry-level positions often provide considerable potential

for advancement. Industry sources indicate that self-

managed individuals with strong initiative who are willing to

continuously learn new skills and upgrade old ones are the

most likely candidates for promotion.

Payroll Administrators are specifically concerned with

employee pay and benefits. They maintain employee records

(for example, attendance and overtime) and use the records

to calculate pay and benefit entitlements. They also prepare

and check statements of earnings and provide information

to employees on payroll matters, benefit plans and collective

agreement terms.

Once education requirements are met, grads can complete

and submit the Application for Certification to receive the

Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification from the

Canadian Payroll Association (CPA).

The future job prospects for this group remain at “above

average” with projected new jobs and openings due to

retirements (between now and 2015) remaining high.

Employment growth projections vary considerably between

occupations. These variations will depend mainly on the

prospects for economic growth in each industrial sector, but

will also depend on each industry’s business structure and

on the impact technology has on middle management

functions in large organizations.

Managers are found throughout all industries and

government. There is a great variation not only in the work

settings but also in the working conditions among these

managerial groups. Managers plan, organize, direct, and

control the activities of the branch or department for which

they are responsible or the business they operate. They also

develop and implement policies and systems for their branch

or department.

This program gives the student the necessary skills to be

competitive in the business world today.

Virtually all projected openings in this field result

from the need to replace retiring workers. A high rate of

worker turnover in these occupations will create many

additional openings.

This is a very large occupational group because most

businesses require clerks to ensure that records are properly

kept, clients are attended to and office equipment is

efficiently used. Most clerks perform general clerical duties,

though some have specialized tasks or concentrate on one

type of work.

Workers in this clerical group perform a range of duties to

keep offices running smoothly. Often their titles describe their

main responsibilities (for example, receptionist), but most

workers will be involved to some extent in a variety of tasks.

Although their workloads will vary by size and type of

office, general office clerks or clerk/typists generally type

correspondence, reports and other documents. They also

maintain filing, inventory, mailing and database systems.

In addition, they may provide general information to clients,

maintain records, and perform routine bookkeeping tasks.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION

Accounting Clerk

These professionals represent a growing proportion of the

total clerical and administrative positions. With the growth in

new technologies, administrative officers are able to perform

and manage a wider range of tasks giving managers more

time to deal with higher level tasks. The fast-growing small

business sector increasingly requires the services of this

occupational group. Those in this field are usually not subject

to major swings related to business cycles, but are affected

more by changes in organizations and technology. Due to

the large size of this group, even an average growth rate will

provide a significant number of job openings.

Business Administrative officers oversee creating a variety

of organizational procedures, set work priorities,

and manage the supply of administrative services, such

as reports, data entry, ordering supplies, and coordinating

security services. They may also handle some petty cash

and direct the work of clerical staff. They are a very large

occupational group and employed throughout the private

as well as public sectors.

The role of administrative officer can vary tremendously

depending on the organization and work load. Typical

duties would include completing work assignments for staff

members, and finding ways to streamline administrative

procedures. For example, administrative officers establish

work priorities, delegate work to office support staff, and

ensure deadlines are met and procedures are followed.

They oversee and coordinate office procedures and routines,

and put new methods in place when necessary.

Legal Assistants are well-paid and have strong prospects for

full-time work. The most employable and promotable legal

assistants have specific training and experience in litigation

and conveyance procedures.

Legal Assistants have some common duties across their

field. They type correspondence, reports, invoices and

related material from handwritten copy or machine dictation,

using a computer. In addition, their duties may include

the preparing of presentation materials, compiling data,

preparing routine correspondence, researching statistics

and other information. Some assistants attend committee

meetings and take minutes.

Other common duties include scheduling and confirming

their employer’s appointments and meetings as well as

greeting visitors and directing them to the appropriate

person. They may handle routine invoicing, payments, order

office supplies, and they may supervise other office workers.

Legal Assistants are required to have understanding of

the vocabulary and processes of law. They handle and

format legal correspondence such as deeds, wills, affidavits

and briefs. They also proofread outgoing documents and

correspondence to make sure that the documents agree with

legal procedures and grammatical usage. In some cases they

attend court or meetings to take notes or minutes.

Sprott Shaw College has partnered with FITT to offer the

FITTskills program. FITT (Forum for International Trade

Training) is an international trade training and professional

certification body. As the only organization of its kind in

the world, FITT sets the standards and designs the training

programs leading to the Certified International Trade

Professional (CITP) designation. FITT’s quality training

programs impart knowledge and practical skills that provide

a competitive advantage to trade practitioners while

elevating their position in world markets.

FITTskills is a highly practical, hands-on series of courses that

focus on the fundamental aspects of international business.

Students may register for these courses as part of our

International Trade programs. Upon successful completion

of all eight (8) courses and assessments, students will be

awarded a FITT Diploma in International Trade. This diploma

fulfills the educational requirement of the CITP designation.

The CITP designation is earned by obtaining the FITT diploma

and meeting standards and requirements set by FITT. These

requirements are:

• Complete the educational requirement by achieving

the FITT diploma;

• Complete or prove a minimum of one year, full-time,

International trade work experience;

• Agree to the Standards of Ethical Conduct;

• Pay the annual dues and maintain the membership in

good standing; and

other medical settings as well as support of managers

and professional employers. They are employed in offices

throughout the public and private sectors.

Medical Office Assistants type correspondence, reports,

preparation of presentation materials. They also prepare

routine correspondence and compile data, statistics and

other information. Some assistants assist committees by

taking minutes.

The duties of Medical Assistants also include specialized

tasks. They schedule and confirm medical appointments,

Sales representatives sell goods and services to retail,

wholesale, commercial, industrial and professional clients.

They are employed by establishments that produce or

provide goods and services such as petroleum companies,

producers of food, beverage or tobacco products, clothing

manufacturers, motor vehicle and parts manufacturers,

hotels, business services firms, and transportation companies.

Sales representatives for wholesale trade who are supervisors

are also included in this unit group.

Sales representatives promote sales to existing clients,

identify and solicit potential clients and provide clients with

a presentation on the benefits and uses of goods or services.

They estimate or quote prices, credit terms, warranties and

delivery dates, and they prepare or oversee preparation of

sales contracts. They also consult with clients after a sale

to resolve problems and provide ongoing support. Also,

they review and adapt to information regarding product

innovations, competitors and market conditions. They may

supervise the activities of other sales representatives

There is a high level of competition for work in this group.

Those who have strong communication and marketing

skills will have a better chance of obtaining work. Those

who neglect to develop skills in these areas may not be

adequately prepared to compete for jobs. With additional

training or experience, progression to sales management

positions is possible.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT WORKER— ASSISTED LIVING

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Mental Health Assistant

Group Home Worker

Palliative Care Worker

Life Skills Coach

Community support workers administer and implement

a variety of social assistance programs and community

services. They assist clients in dealing with personal and

social problems. They are employed by social service

and government agencies, group homes, correctional

facilities, and other establishments.

Industry sources suggest that opportunities will be best in

job training programs, residential care facilities, and private

social service agencies. Employment opportunities are much

better for those who have appropriate post-secondary

education. The growing population of elderly persons, the

mentally disabled, and developmentally challenged will

maintain the need for these workers. Community support

workers support and aid recipients of social assistance and

pensions. They provide assistance to clients living in group

homes and half-way houses by facilitating and supervising

their activities. They may work in crisis intervention and

emergency shelter services.

They also can assist in evaluating the effectiveness of

treatment programs by tracking (observing, reporting

and documenting) clients’ behavioral changes and

responses to interventions. Community support workers

maintain contact with other social service agencies and

other members of a multi-disciplinary team involved with

their clients to provide information and to obtain feedback

on clients’ overall progress. This work is done under

the supervision of social workers (Licensed health care

professionals—could be RN’s OT’s PT’s Mental Health Case

Managers, Social Workers, Dr.’s) or health care professionals.

This program gives the student the necessary skills to be a

part of the interdisciplinary team working towards quality of

life for the people that they work with.

They work as members of a health care team in a variety

of settings with direction and supervision from other

health professionals.

The work done by HCAs is based on a set of fundamental

values, beliefs and ethical principles that are consistently

reflected in all aspects of their work with clients, residents,

families, team members and others. Amongst these core

values, beliefs and principles, which serve as foundations of

HCA practice, are those related to:

• Human Beings

• Older Adults

• Health and Healing

• Healthcare

• Caring and Caregiving

• The Family in Health and Healing

• Understanding Culture and Diversity

The HCA Program is designed to provide students with

opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes

necessary to function effectively as front-line care-givers,

and respected members of the healthcare team, in

community and facility settings. Under the direction and

supervision of a health care professional, graduates provide

person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining

the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of

LIVE-IN CAREGIVER

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Care Aide

Home Support Worker

Long-Term Care Aide

Live-in Caregiver

The need for Health Care Assistants, Resident Care

Attendants, Home Support Workers, Long-term Care Aides,

and Live-In Care givers continues to grow at an increasing

rate. Health Care Assistants provide and maintain a safe

and clean environment in health care facilities and in

patient’s homes.

They provide clients with assistance in activities of daily

living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming. Sometimes

they serve meal trays and feed patients. To help patients

recover, they lift, turn or massage patients and they may also

supervise patients’ exercise routines.

They take basic measurements, such as patients’ blood

pressure temperature and pulse. They collect specimens,

such as urine, administer suppositories, enemas, and perform

other procedures. They transport patients in wheelchairs

or stretchers for treatment or surgery, carry medical items

(messages, reports, requisitions and specimens) from one

department to another, and maintain an inventory of supplies.

They provide basic patient care including supplying and

emptying bed pans.

The additional Early Childhood courses will provide the

students with the skills to provide a caring and educational

environment where children are able to thrive. They will

contribute to the well-being of the family as well.

This program gives the student the necessary skills to belong

to this “in-high-demand” occupation. Live-ins usually work

longer hours; however, if they work evenings or weekends

they may get time off. Although living-in may isolate them

from their family and friends; these workers often become

part of their employer’s family and may derive satisfaction

from caring for them.

improvement and health enhancement through professionally

administered spa services. Skills obtained in this program

will open career prospects within day spa, resort/hotel spa,

destination spa, medical spa, club spa, mineral springs spa,

cruise ship spa, and others. Consumers are increasingly

seeking the spa experience as an alternative or complement

physiology, students will be provided with a detailed hands-

on study of human anatomy, general pathology, nutrition,

therapeutic exercise, and hygiene. The clinical portion of

this diploma program will allow the student an opportunity

Swedish massage techniques are also taught as these

The two most recent labour market studies in BC have both

come to the same conclusion—tourism in BC is a growth

industry. There has been speculation that there will be an

increase of about 100,000 new jobs by 2020 due to new

jobs and current workers retiring. Although this is great

news, it does pose some challenges, not the least of which

is establishing a strategy to make sure that BC has enough

skilled people in the right place at the right time.

If you are interested in working in the accommodation

industry, positions as a front desk agent, housekeeper or bell

person are great ways to get an introduction to this sector.

Along with meeting people from around the world, these

front-line staff members have the advantage of learning

about the various aspects of the hotel business (and an

opportunity to climb the corporate ladder).

For those who are more interested in being behind the

scenes, the accommodation industry also requires workers for

business and trade-related positions—including accountants,

marketers, cooks, bakers and carpenters.

With thousands of events being hosted at BC properties each

year—such as conferences, weddings, seminars and so on—

the accommodation sector also requires sales, support and

event staff. An integral part of any hotel team includes sales

representatives, concierges, event coordinators and others

who help bring business to the property and ensure all of the

events run smoothly.

So, whether you’re interested in being on the front lines or

behind the scenes, working at a mountain resort, wilderness

campground or a cosmopolitan hotel in the heart of a

bustling city—a career in this dynamic industry can definitely

accommodate you.

This program offers AHLA (American Hotel and Lodging

Association) certificates.

Rapid growth in the accommodation and food services

industry is being driven by a rapidly growing tourism sector,

and this will create employment growth for this occupation.

This industry, which employs all of these workers, is expected

to grow faster than the all-industry average due to retiring

workers and industry growth. There has been speculation

that there will be an increase of about 100,000 new jobs by

2020. Vancouver is rated as one of the top ten destination

cities in the world and will continue to attract tourists in

the near future. Graduates in this industry will assist with all

aspects of guest services and present a positive impression

of the establishment. They make room reservations, provide

information and services to guests and receive payment for

services. They are employed by hotels, motels and resorts.

Workers in this occupational group make room reservations,

register arriving guests, assign rooms and answer enquiries

regarding hotel services and registration by letter,

telephone and in person. They also respond to guests’

enquiries, requests and complaints. They compile and

check daily record sheets, guest accounts, receipts and

vouchers using computerized or manual systems, and they

present statements of charges to departing guests and

receive payment.
