Foreword / Performance notes

In There is a Light, the Christmas story as told inSt. Luke’s Gospel has been arranged in the spirit of anoratorio, using songs and gospel singing. Recitativesolo parts form bridges between the songs sung by thechoir and the spoken texts.

Lorenz Maierhofer’s distinctive compositional conceptpermits a number of variations in the way the work isperformed: a cappella (basic edition) or with pianoaccompaniment throughout (enriched edition). A furtheroption is the combination of different choir formationsperforming together (mixed choir, treble choir, male-voice choir).

Basic editionThe basic edition provides all of the choral pieces aseasy-to-sing strophic songs. This permits a notationwhich is short and very transparent. The interpretationof the strophic versions of the gospel and other songsis expressed a cappella with the individual charm of thechoir and the soloists. The naming of the chordsthroughout indicates the possibility of a free chordaccompaniment (e.g. on guitar or piano or by a group).Pianists will also find the piano accompaniment in theenriched edition SATB according to the complete recor-ding on CD. However, for the strophic versions of thechoral pieces they should in each case play only for thepart concerned, repeating this in line with the number ofstanzas.

Different choral formations – combinedwithin one performanceThe three choral versions available in the basic edition(mixed choir, treble choir, male-voice choir) can becombined to produce a single, joint performance, withthe different choirs taking turns to interpret the pieces.The recitative solos between the songs create thenecessary modulations towards the key of the choralsetting that follows.

In There is a Light ist die Weihnachtsgeschichte nachdem Lukas-Evangelium mit Songs und Gospels imSinne eines Oratoriums verarbeitet. Rezitativische Solo-teile spannen Brücken zwischen den chorisch gesun-genen Songs und den gesprochenen Texten.

Das besondere kompositorische Konzept lässt unter-schiedliche Aufführungsvarianten zu: a cappella (Basis-ausgabe) oder mit durchgehender Klavierbegleitung(Erweiterte Ausgabe). Auch Kombinationen verschiede-ner chorischer Besetzungen in einer gemeinsamen Auf-führung (gemischter Chor / Frauenchor / Männerchor)sind möglich.

BasisausgabeDie Basisausgabe bietet alle Chorstücke als leicht sing-bare Strophenlieder. Dies ermöglicht eine kurzeund sehr übersichtliche Notation. Die Songs undGospels in der Version als Strophenlieder werden in derInterpretation mit individuellem Charme des Choresund der Solisten a cappella gestaltet. Eine durchgehen-de Akkordbezeichnung deutet auch die Möglichkeiteiner freien Akkordbegleitung (z. B. mit Gitarre, Klavieroder Band) an. Pianisten können die Klavierbegleitungauch aus der Erweiterten Ausgabe SATB, entsprechendder Gesamtaufnahme auf CD, entnehmen. Dabei musi-zieren sie zu den Chorstücken in Strophenliedform je-weils nur den betreffenden Teil und wiederholen diesenentsprechend der Strophenanzahl.

Verschiedene Chorbesetzungen – in derAufführung kombinierbarDie drei erhältlichen Chorausgaben der Basisausgabe(gemischter Chor / Frauenchor / Männerchor) können ineiner gemeinsamen Aufführung kombiniert werden, dieStücke werden dabei wechselnd von unterschiedlichenChören interpretiert. Die rezitativischen Soli zwischenden Songs schaffen die notwendigen Modulationen hinzur Tonart des folgenden Chorsatzes.

In jenen Tagen erließ Kaiser Augustus den Befehl, alle

Bewohner des Reiches in Steuerlisten einzutragen. Dies

geschah zum ersten Mal, damals war Quirinius Statt-

halter von Syrien. Da ging jeder in seine Stadt um sich

eintragen zu lassen. So zog auch Josef von der Stadt

Nazareth in Galiläa hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt

Davids, die Bethlehem heißt, denn er war aus dem

Haus und dem Geschlecht Davids.

registered for taxation. This was the first such regis-

tration and it took place when Quirinius was Governor

of Syria. Every man then went to his own city to be

registered. And Joseph, too, travelled from the town

which is called Bethlehem, for he was of the house

and the line of David.

The shepherds were very much afraid, but the angel

said to them: “Do not be afraid, for I am here to tell

you an event of great joy in which all of the people

shall share: today, in the city of David, your saviour

has been born, he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

Performance hints:

• The chorus is also repeated between the verses.

• At the close, the final two bars “all the way for you”

are repeated three times, concluding possibly with

everyone pointing their index finger forward.

Gestaltungsvorschläge:

• Der Refrain wird auch zwischen den Strophen wiederholt.

• Zum Schluss werden die letzten beiden Takte „all the way

for you“ dreimal wiederholt, abschließend evtl. Fingerzeig
