INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAFE OPERATION 1. Know your controls and how to stop quickly. Do

not operate without proper instructions. Read the Owners Manual.

2. Do not allow children to operate tiller; nor adults to operate it without proper instructions.

3. Keep children and pets a safe distance away.

4. Before tilling, check and remove sticks, stones, or any other debris from area to be tilled. This will prevent possible tiller damage and eliminate the posibility of tines picking up and throwing debris.

5. Never allow anyone near tiller while it is in opera¬ tion.

6. Observe all decals.

7. Keep all shields in place. Beware of rotating parts.

8. Always till slowly over rough ground and on hillsides. Till at speeds slow enough to insure your safety. Be alert for holes, ditches, and other ir¬ regularities that may cause the tractor to over¬ turn.

9. Do not stop or start suddenly when going up or down hill.

0. Avoid steep hillside operation which could cause the tractor to overturn. Reduce speed when turn¬ ing so there is no danger of the tractor over¬ turning.

11. Always look behind you when backing up.

12. Do not back up with tiller engaged. Raise tiller to transport position before backing up or turninp-. sharply.

13. Stop the tiller after striking a solid object. Inspect the tiller for damage and make necessary repairs prior to restarting and operating.

14. Always maintain the tiller equipment properly. Check all fasteners, guards, and parts frequently. Built-in safety features are effective only if main¬ tained.

1 5. Handle gasoline with care. It is highly flammable. Never add gasoline to a running or hot engine. Wipe up spilled gasoline. Do not run or fill engine indoors. Exhaust fumes are dangerous.

16. When the tractor is parked, stored, or left unat¬ tended, always lower the tiller so that it is resting on the ground or floor. If left in a raised position, the Lift Lever could accidentally be moved causing the tiller to fall and injure someone.

17. Never attempt to make any adjustment while engine is running. Disengage the tiller clutch. Stop the engine, remove the ignition key and discon¬ nect spark plug wire.

18. Keep hands, feet and clothing away from tines. Loose clothing can become tangled in moving parts and/or controls, resulting in personal injury^

19. Do not clear tine area without disengaging tillei, stopping tractor engine and setting parking brake. ~

CAUTION > Keep all shields in place

• Before servicing machine shut off engine, make sure mechanism has stopped, disconnect engine spark plug wire

• Do not stand near machine while it is in motion.

INSTALLATION GENERAL

If your Yard Tractor has the mower pan installed, ^*ynove it following the instructions in the Yard Tractor

wner's Manual.

NOTE: WHEEL WEIGHTS ON REAR WHEELS AND/OR TIRE CHAINS ON REAR TIRES ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE INSTALLATION OF THE TILLER AT¬ TACHMENT AND ENSURE PROPER OPERATION.

ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION Refer to "TILLER INSTALLATION" in "DEALER ASSEMBLY & PRE-SERVICE" section of this manual for complete instructions.

REMOVAL 1. Before attempting to remove tiller attachment

from tractor, be sure tractor is positioned on a smooth level surface.

2. Block the tiller securely under the tines in the raised position to take the weight off of the linkages.

3. Remove the tiller drive belt from around the PTO sheave in the tractor and pull the drive belt out the slot in the tractor drawbar. The PTO sheave and belt finger installed for the tiller attachment may remain in place on the tractor since they will not interfere with other tractor uses. See Figure 1.

4. Remove the hair pin cotters. Remove the springs by extending them and lifting them off of the Ac¬ tuator Adjustor Rod, then the Main Mounting Pin. Pull the Main Mounting Pin from between the tiller frame and tractor draw bar to free the tiller. Pull Main Mounting Pin toward one side until end is free, then push toward other side to remove. Replace the hardware on the tiller frame to pre¬ vent loss. See Figure 2.

5. The new Draw Bar (Part No. 35281) supplied with your tiller does not need to be exchanged to use other attachments. a. To install the 835007 Grass Bagger to your

CONTROLS NOTE: THE ATTACHMENT LIFT LEVER AT THE OPERATOR'S RIGHT, AND THE IMPLEMENT POWER LEVER AT THE OPERATOR'S LEFT, ARE NOT USED WITH THE REAR MOUNTED ROTARY TILLER AT¬ TACHMENT. LIFTING AND LOWERING OF THE TILLER, AS WELL AS CLUTCHING OF THE BELT, IS ALL CONTROLLED WITH THE SINGLE TILLER LIFT LEVER © AT THE RIGHT OF THE OPERATOR'S SEAT. SEE FIGURE 5.

(a) IGNITION AND STARTER SWITCH - FIGURE 4

The ignition and starter switch has three positions: "OFF”, "RUN" and "START". Start the engine by tur¬ ning the key fully clockwise to "START" position and then release the key as soon as the engine starts. Stop the engine by turning the key counterclockwise to the "OFF" position.

(b) THROTTLE-CHOKE CONTROL LEVER - FIGURE 4

This control operates both the throttle and choke. When starting a cold engine, raise the lever past the offset and into the "CHOKE" position. After the engine has started, lower the lever to the throttle operating range and allow the engine to warm at 'A throttle. Select the appropriate engine speed in the throttle range after the engine has warmed.

NOTE: UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, THE TILLER SHOULD BE OPERATED AT FULL THROTTLE. THE THROTTLE IS NOT TO BE USED TO SELECT DESIRED TRAVEL SPEEDS. OPERATE AT FULL THROTTLE AND REGULATE GROUND SPEED WITH THE SPEED SELEC¬ TOR LEVER.

@ TILLER LIFT LEVER - FIGURE 5

The Lift Lever shown in Figure 5 is used to raise and lower the tiller as well as to start and stop rotation of the tiller tines. To lower the tiller and start the tines rotating, pull the lever in toward the seat and raise it to its highest position. The tines will start to rotate and

the tiller will lower into the operating position as deter¬ mined by setting of the depth control. To raise the tiller and stop the tine rotation, push the lever down and away from the seat to latch it in the down position. As the lever is pushed down, the tiller will lift from the operating position and the tines will stop rotating. r

(d) SPEED SELECTOR - FIGURE 6

The Speed Selector Lever is used to select any of three forward gears or one reverse gear. The markings "1", "2", "3" and "R” on the floor plate indicate the loca¬ tions of the gears. The slowest forward gear is in¬ dicated by No. 1, the secondary gear, No. 2 and the fastest gear, No. 3. The "R" indicates reverse.

THE SPEED SELECTOR LEVER MUST BE IN THE NEUTRAL POSITION AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 6 TO START THE ENGINE.

Page 6: C7^rtens OWNERS MANUAL...C7^rtens OWNERS MANUAL 835000 SERIES ROTARY TILLER MODEL 835008 (26RT) FOR USE WITH ARIENS 935000 SERIES YARD TRACTORS SERIAL NO. 000101 AND …

3. Place Implement Power Clutch Lever and Tiller Lift Lever © in the disengaged position.

4. Raise Throttle Choke Control Lever ® Figure 4 past the offset in the slot to the "CHOKE” posi¬ tion.

NOTE: OPERATOR MUST BE ON SEAT TO START UNIT. TRACTOR HAS A SEAT SWITCH FOR SAFETY.

5. Turn ignition key ® shown in Figure 4 clockwise all the way. Release key as soon as the engine starts and gradually lower the Throttle-Choke Control Lever past the offset until the engine runs at Vi throttle.

NOTE: A WARM ENGINE WILL REQUIRE LESS CHOK¬ ING THAN A COLD ENGINE.

If the engine fails to start on the first attempt, turn key to the "OFF" position, wait a few minutes and try again. Do not operate starter continuously for more than 30 seconds at a time.

Always allow engine to warm up before applying load. SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE AND TRANSMIS¬ SION COULD RESULT IF THIS PROCEDURE IS NOT FOLLOWED.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

Always use the following procedure to stop the engine:

1. Disengage the Tiller Lift Lever © , Figure 5.

2. Move the Speed Selector Lever © Figure 6 to the "NEUTRAL" position.

3. Engage parking brake by depressing the brake pedal ©, Figure 4 and pulling up on the brake lock © Figure 5.

4. Lower throttle lever and allow the engine to idle for a short period of time. DO NOT STOP A HOT ENGINE AT HIGH SPEED AS INTERNAL ENGINE DAMAGE COULD RESULT.

5. Turn ignition key counterclockwise to the "OFF" position to stop the engine.

CAUTION: REMOVE IGNITION KEY BEFORE DIS¬ MOUNTING FROM TRACTOR. THIS WILL PREVENT CHILDREN AND INEXPERIENCED OPERATORS FROM STARTING THE TRACTOR.

TILLER OPERATION

Tilling methods vary depending upon individual re¬ quirements, soil conditions, and the shape and contour of the area to be tilled.

Always operate tractor at full throttle to meet power re¬ quirements and to obtain proper engine cooling. Select a slow travel speed (first gear in low range) to obtain maximum soil pulverization.

Never back the tractor or make sharp turns when tines are in the soil or leveler blade is down. This could result in extensive damage to the tiller.

The tiller tends to propel the tractor forward. Travel slowly. Be prepared to raise the tiller and stop the trac¬ tor quickly.

When tilling sod or hard ground, make the first pass^*^ with the tiller adjusted to a shallow depth. Increase the depth after each pass over the area. See "AD¬ JUSTMENTS” section of this manual.

Do not till wet or extremely moist soil. Wet soil tends to "ball up" and cake, making tilling difficult.

Tall grass or weeds should be cut, defoliated or burned before tilling.

A IMPORTANT: RAISE TILLER OUT OF THE SOIL WHEN MAKING TURNS TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE DRIVE CASE OR PIVOT.

B ADJUSTMENTS ^ MAINTENANCE A 2. KEEP CHILDREN, BYSTANDERS, AND PETS OUT

OF THE WORKING AREA.

1. BEFORE SERVICING ANY ATTACHMENT:

a. DISENGAGE POWER.

b. SHUT OFF ENGINE.

c. MAKE SURE ATTACHMENT HAS STOPPED REVOLVING.

d. REMOVE IGNITION KEY AND DISCONNECT ENGINE SPARK PLUG CABLE TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL RESTART.

3. KEEP HANDS, FEET AND CLOTHING AWAY FROM POWER DRIVEN PARTS.

4. KEEP ALL SHIELDS AND GUARDS IN PLACE.

BELT FINGERS - FIGURE 7A

Adjust all belt fingers to clear belt by 1/16 inch with tiller in lowered position.

Idler belt fingers should be rotated around idler to the mid point at which the belt contacts the idler.

Page 7: C7^rtens OWNERS MANUAL...C7^rtens OWNERS MANUAL 835000 SERIES ROTARY TILLER MODEL 835008 (26RT) FOR USE WITH ARIENS 935000 SERIES YARD TRACTORS SERIAL NO. 000101 AND …

IDLERS

The selling price of ARIENS BELTS reflects these quali¬ ty features. Our name and number stamped on your replacement belt is your assurance of receiving the quality you are paying for.

IDLER ADJUSTMENT - FIGURE 7

The idler located just above the tiller drive sheave is mounted in a slotted hole and is adjustable. Position the idler in the slot so that the tiller drives smoothly as it ap- proaches the lowered position and so that the tines stop when the Lift Lever is lowered to the locked posi¬ tion with the tiller raised from the ground.

ACTUATOR ROD ADJUSTMENT - FIGURE 7B

The Actuator Rod positions the adjustable idler pivot iiracket as the tiller is adjusted for varying depths. This

/f^>d must be adjusted outward far enough to secure the Jler bracket but not far enough to interfere with the rotation of the idler. Adjust the hex section of the Ac¬ tuator Rod so that it clears the idler by 1/16 inch. See Figure 78. Secure the adjustment by tightening the jam nut against the hex section.

DEPTH CONTROL - FIGURE 8

Tilling depth must be adjusted to soil conditions. Always use a shallow tilling depth for the first pass on hard soil which has not been tilled. Use a deeper setting for succeeding passes or on well worked soil.

Tilling depth is controlled by the position of the pin in the holes in the Tiller Depth Control bar. See Figure 8A. Choose one of the four holes depending upon the tilling to be done. The hole nearest the slot is the shallowest tilling depth. Use this hole for "first pass" tilling. Tilling unprepared soil at too great a depth will cause the tiller to push the tractor. See Figure 8B for tilling depths.

ADJUSTMENTS ^ MAINTENANCE SPRING TENSION ADJUSTMENT

Spring Hooks (Part No. 35336) are provided for op¬ tional use when the tiller has a tendency to lift out of the ground (usually in hard or packed earth). By install¬ ing the Spring(s), (Part No. 831 90) between the Main Mounting Pin and the Spring Hooks the effective length

of the Spring(s) may be increased. This will reduce ten¬ sion which tends to lift tiller under conditions ap'"'^ described. See Figure 14 for adjustment reference. Ariens recommends that the operator install one (1) Spring on a Spring Hook if tiller tends to lift. If less spring tension is desired, the second Spring may be in¬ stalled on a Spring Hook.

LUBRICATION

GENERAL - FIGURE 7A

Apply several drops of oil to each idler and pivot point at the beginning of the tilling season. Oil again after every eight hours of operation.

TILLER CHAINCASE - FIGURE 9

Check the level of lubricant in the chaincase at the beginning of the tilling seson and after every eight hours of operation. Lubricant should reach the level of the checking hole with the tiller in raised position. See Figure 9. If lubricant is low, add Ariens MP-90 Lubri¬ cant through the fill hole until it starts to run out the checking hole.

STORAGE TILLER MAINTENANCE FOR STORAGE GENERAL

The following maintenance should be performed at the end of each tilling season to provide longer and most efficient service from the tiller.

1. Remove tiller from the tractor using the procedure outlined on page 3 of this manual.

2. Thoroughly clean the tiller and remove all material which has built up under the shrouding and on the tines.

3. Coat the tines with oil tp prevent rusting.

4. Remove drive belt and store in a dark, dry area.

5. Lubricate tiller as recommended in this manual.

TILLER INSTALLATION

Remove the Draw Bar (035023) from your Yard Tractor. (This consists of the rear panel of the frame.) A new Draw Bar supplied with the Tiller Attachment is required for installation of the Tiller. Remove capscrews (0591 54), lockwashers (063003), and nuts (065124) from the two top holes of the Draw Bar and the rear of the tractor frame. Remove the capscrews (059135), washers (064002), and locknuts (065017) from the rear of the Draw Bar. See Figure 10.

2. Drill out the two top holes on the rear of the trac¬ tor frame if necessary with a 25/64” drill. This will allow clearance to accept the new 3/8” hard¬ ware required to install the new Draw Bar. See Figure 10.

3. Install the Draw Bar supplied with the Tiller. Use two 3/8” capscrews, lockwashers and nuts through the top holes of the Draw Bar and rear of tractor frame. Install the three original capscrews, washers, and locknuts through the rear holes of the Draw Bar. See Figure 11.

4. Remove the PTO Sheave from the Yard Tractor as follows: (See Figure 12.)

a. Disconnect one end of the Main Idler Spring under left side of tractor frame. (Located just in front of the running board.) This may be done easily with a pair of vise-grip pliers.

b. Disengage the Traction Clutch Idler, and rotate the belt off the transaxle sheave and PTO sheave.

c. Using a 1 V8” socket wrench and a 9/16” open end wrench on flats at bottom of jack shaft remove the PTO sheave. This is best done by pushing down the drive shaft far enough to clear the sheave. DO NOT LOSE THE KEY. It must be reinstalled in step 5a.

d. Be sure to remove (and do not re-use) the large Flat Washer installed under the original PTO sheave.

5. Install the new 3-groove PTO sheave supplied with the Tiller as follows:

a. Make sure to reinstall the key supplied original¬ ly with the Yard Tractor PTO sheave. Install Main Drive Belt in lowest, large dia. groove of 3-groove sheave. See Figure 12.

b. Install new PTO sheave with Main Tractor Drive Belt in place using all original hardware except the large flat washer.

c. Reinstall the Traction Drive Belt in the center groove of the new PTO sheave and re-engage in traction clutch idler.

d. Reconnect the Main Idler Spring under left side of tractor.

e. Tighten %" nut with 1 ’/s” socket wrench and 9/16” open end wrench securely.

7. Install the assembled Tiller unit from the carton onto the Draw Bar newly attached to the tractor. Position the stud pin on the bottom of the Tiller Frame into the hole in the center of the Draw Bar. The holes in the top front of the tiller frame should align with the holes in the "ears" of the tractor Draw Bar. The capscrew in the center of the Draw Bar must fit through the large hole in the center of the Tiller frame front section. See Figure 3.

8. Spring Hooks (Part No. 35336), shown in Figure 14, are installed on the Pin (Part No. 35303) for optional use in extending the effective spring length of the Springs (Part No. 83190). See "ADJUSTMENTS-MAINTENANCE" section of this manual. As viewed from the rear, insert the Main Mounting Pin through the Depth Control Bracket from left to right; then through the Right Spring Hook and through the right draw bar moun¬ ting ear. See Figure 1 3. Slide the pin all the way to the right against the tire.

9. As the pin is pushed back to the left, route the Mounting Pin through the Left Spring Hook, then through the left Draw Bar mounting ear and tiller frame hole. See Figure 14.

the transaxle neutral switch as shown in Figure 15.

13. Install the connector on the blue wire of the tiller safety switch harness to the top connection (blue wire) on the double connector body as shown in Figure 1 5.

14. Install tiller drive belt on the tiller drive sheave, under the top tiller idler and above the bottom tiller idler, through the rear opening in the tractor draw bar, and around the top groove on the new PTO sheave on the tractor. See Figure 16.

1 5. Check and align the idlers, belt fingers and tiller drive sheave. See Figure 16. NOTE: BELT FINGERS SHOULD BE CENTERED BETWEEN THE TWO TANGENT POINTS OF THE IDLER CON¬ TACT OR WRAP WITH THE BELT. BELT FINGER CLEARANCE FOR THE PTO SHEAVE FINGER IS 1/16” WHEN BELT IS ENGAGED. TILLER BELT FINGER CLEARANCES ARE 1/16" ALSO.

16. Replace the belt shield on the mounting arm of the tiller frame. Secure the belt guard with two lockwashers and wingnuts onto the studs of the shield mounting bracket. See Figure 17.

1 7. Slip the short end of the Lift Lever through the two holes in the Lift Lever Mounting Bracket. Secure the Lift Lever with the latch section over the side of the Tiller frame. Install a % washer and a hair pin through the end of the Lift Lever. See Figures 17 and 18.
