Howard Swan Award Since 1985, it has been the privilege of California ACDA to recognize an outstanding choral director in our state who is reHred from full Hme conducHng. The presHgious lifeHme achievement award given to this conductor is named in honor of Dr. Howard S. Swan, who was known as the “Dean of American Choral Directors.” Howard Swan’s life spanned almost the enHre twenHeth century. It is nearly impossible to overemphasize the far-‐reaching effects of his arHsHc command, powerful personality, and humanitarian spirit. ARer beginning his career as a teacher at Eagle Rock High School, Dr. Swan became the choral director at Occidental College in Los Angeles, a posiHon he held from 1934-‐1971. The Occidental College Glee Clubs under his direcHon gained naHonal stature, performing with exquisite tone quality and electric communicaHon. Dr. Swan became the mentor of mulHple generaHons of choral directors. Conductors from all over the country would come to study with him at Oxy, and subsequently at Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. His integrity, high view of the arHsHc/human role of the choral director, and compelling ability to challenge and inspire students and colleagues to greater vision and higher standards awakened the collecHve conscience of the choral world. It is for this reason that the book containing his wriHngs and speeches is enHtled Conscience of a Profession: Howard Swan, Choral Director and Teacher.
2015 Howard Swan Award Recipient Dr. Ronald Kean, Emeritus Professor of Music at Bakersfield College, recently reHred aRer compleHng his 30th year of teaching in California. His DMA degree is from the University of Southern California where his conducHng teachers were Rodney Eichenberger, James Vail, and Daniel Lewis as apprenHce conductor of the USC Symphony. Prior to his advanced degrees, Ron was invited to be a copyist for the late Robert Shaw and sang in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus. He studied west African drumming from Ghanaian master drummer Samuel Kwaku Daddy and LaHn percussion with Marcos Reyes from the renowned group, “War.”
His teaching opportuniHes included choral music and world music, which he taught for the past 26 years in the Kern Community College District. Prior experience includes four years as a high school choral music teacher in southern California. He was awarded the 2012-‐2013 Bakersfield College DisHnguished Teaching Award by his colleagues. He is Past-‐President of the Music AssociaHon of California Community Colleges (MACCC) and Past-‐President of the American Choral Directors AssociaHon Western Division following six years as Repertoire and Standards Chair for Ethnic and MulHcultural PerspecHves at state, division, and naHonal levels. He was selected to be the 2007 California Music Educators AssociaHon MulHcultural Educator the Year.
The Bakersfield College Chamber Singers under his direcHon have performed at state, division, and naHonal ACDA convenHons. He is frequently called upon to adjudicate fesHvals, lecture, and to conduct workshops and honor choirs in the US and abroad. He recently adjudicated choral music fesHvals at Fresno State University, Bakersfield High School, Santa Rosa Community College, USC, and the Bali InternaHonal Choral FesHval. Recent guest conducHng opportuniHes include the Santa Monica/Malibu School District Honor Choirs, Bakersfield
Symphony Orchestra with the Bakersfield College Choirs, Hoʻolōkahi Choir FesHval and Oahu Sacred Choral Music FesHval in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the world premiere performance of his “Yeats in Love” choral cycle in Sligo, Ireland, the birthplace of William Butler Yeats.
Pavane Music Publishers features both the Ron Kean Choral Series and MulHcultural Choral Series. His composiHons and arrangements are widely performed throughout the United States and abroad. He has completed five commissions in the last 18 months for Cal. Poly State University, Pomona and Vox Femina, Iris Levine, Conductor; the Mountainside Master Chorale, Jean SebasHen Vallee, conductor; Bakersfield High School, Christopher Borges, conductor, and most recently for the San José State University Choraliers (Jeffrey Benson) and West Valley College Chamber Singers (Lou De La Rosa) for their combined tour of Ireland.
