Uraduct®

Uraduct® is a patented product designedand developed by Trelleborg CRP. It hasestablished an enviable reputation as anindustry standard for cable and flowlineprotection. An intensive investmentprogramme has resulted in Uraduct®

becoming the universal protection systemfor fibre optic cables, power cables, umbilicals, flexible flowlines, rigid flowlines, hoses and bundled products.

In areas where additional protection isrequired, e.g. rocky seabeds, touchdownlocations, shore landings or cable/pipelinecrossings, Uraduct® provides a highperformance technical and cost -effectiveprotection solution in comparison toalternative methods such as rock dumpingor concrete mattressing.

Uraduct® comprises of cylindrical half -shellsmoulded in a range of thicknesses from the most applicable grade of highperformance polyurethane (see pages 16& 17 for material specifications). The half - shells overlap and interlock to formclose fitting protection around the coreproduct. For ease of handling andtransportation, Uraduct® is manufactured in lengths of up to 2.0m with flexingcharacteristics to suit the requiredminimum bend radius of the product orancillary shipboard lay equipment.Uraduct®, a custom made system, ismanufactured to suit the core product withinternal diameters ranging from 15mm upto 950mm.

Recent innovation programmes and clientrequests have lead to a number of keyproduct developments in the Uraduct®

range. Trelleborg CRP now offer a ‘multi-fit’Uraduct® design which will accommodatea larger range of core product sizes. Thissolution assists clients in situations whereexact core product sizes are likely to varyor are unknown.

Page 7: Cable and Flowline Products Uraduct and Straduct

5

The half - shells are secured in place usingpre-cut corrosion resistant banding (seepages 14 & 15). The banding is located inrecessed grooves that not only ensure asmooth external profile allowing passagethrough cable engines etc, but alsoeliminates the need to measure the bandspacing. The assembly of the system isquick and efficient being appliedsimultaneously with product installation. This is a major benefit in weatherdependent industries such as the oil andgas and submarine telecommunicationsindustries.

Uraduct® also differs from many alternativeprotection methods in that it becomes anintegral part of the cable or pipeline and is a fully tested system with a proven track record, details of which can besupplied on request - Trelleborg CRP isProven to Perform.

Extensive use in the oil and gas industry bymost leading oil companies has madeUraduct® the automatic choice for aiding“crossing acceptance” where submarinetelecommunication cables or power cablescross existing pipelines or cables. Uraduct®

has been specified on an ever increasingrange of projects, from flexible risertouchdown over coral seabeds toprotection of small fibre optic cables whereburial cannot be achieved.

Although Uraduct® was originally designedfor harsh offshore conditions; many ofTrelleborg CRP’s customers appreciate howthe protection properties of Uraduct® canalso meet the needs of land based projectswhere operating conditions can be just asonerous. No other protection method candeliver the level of all round protectioncombined with the economic benefitsassociated with a Uraduct® installation.

Uraduct® +

6

In response to client requests and forapplications where pipelines or cables are to be subject to high levels of abrasion,Trelleborg CRP has developed Uraduct® +,which is considered to be the ultimateprotection solution. Flexible pipes, powercables and fibre optic cables can beprotected in any area where abrasion isconsidered to be a problem andstabilisation cannot be achieved. Thisincludes pipeline touchdown locations, rocky areas and shore landings.

Uraduct®+ is moulded in Trelleborg CRP’s“super abrasion resistant” elastomer (seepages 16 and 17 for material specification)and offers all the characteristics ofstandard Uraduct® with the added benefitof encapsulating the securing bands toprevent premature wear or abrasion of thebanding itself.

The polyurethane half - shell mouldings aresupplied in loose pre-assembled pairs, withthe securing bands fully encapsulatedwithin the body of the PU protectionsystem, with the exception of the sealarrangement. Uraduct®+ is installed ontothe pipeline or cable in pairs, with thesocket and spigot overlapping andinterlocking each pair of mouldings in theassembly. The socket and spigots aredesigned with a ‘dove tail’ arrangement, ensuring full system integrity when subjectto bending, during either installation orservice.

Uraduct®+ is secured in place by 32mmwide x 0.8mm thick Alloy 625 banding. Thesame pneumatic band tools as used forstandard Uraduct® are employed totension, crimp and cut the bands, allowingfor quick and simple installation.

The protection system is also designed toallow for the removal of the securing bandsand replacement with new securing bandsin the event that the protection system isto be removed and reinstalled on to a newriser system.

Uraduct®+ has undergone full factorytesting to ensure that it is fully qualified tomeet the stringent requirements laid downby its clients.

Whilst utilising materials that have beenfield proven over a number of years, thisinnovative design has now taken cable andpipeline protection to new levels. No otherproduct on the market can matchTrelleborg CRP’s Uraduct®+. Trelleborg CRP is Proven to Perform.

Uraduct® - Retrofit riser system

7

In response to the increasing number ofadditional cables requiring access to andfrom offshore platforms, Trelleborg CRPdeveloped the Uraduct® Retrofit RiserSystem, which comprises of Uraduct® anddedicated, high integrity, locating clamps.

This system provides a very cost-effectivesolution where cable access to a platformis not possible via existing ‘J’ or ‘I’ tubes.Prior to Trelleborg CRP’s Uraduct® RetrofitRiser System the only alternative was toinstall new steel ‘J’ or ‘I’ tubes at greatexpense, compounded with timeconsuming and problematic installation.

With the introduction of the Uraduct®

Retrofit Riser System, substantial costsavings along with improved installationtimes have resulted in a number of projectscoming to fruition which previously wouldnot have been possible.

The securing clamps for this system aredesigned to withstand the extremeconditions experienced on offshoreinstallations, and can be configured to suitmultiple cables. Under normal circumstancesthe clamps are pre-installed onto a suitableplatform leg or structure at regularintervals, the spacing being dependent onthe security required. Alternative clampdesigns are available where multiplecables are to be installed. The clampbodies are manufactured from a highperformance, rigid, marine gradepolyurethane elastomer. No special weldingequipment is required as the clamp basesare secured by means of a Polyloop™ highstrength Kevlar/EVA coated strap and ahighly corrosion resistant metallictensioning assembly, typicallymanufactured in Zeron 100 or titanium.

Trelleborg CRP’s Uraduct® Retrofit RiserSystem has been successfully installed onplatforms off the coast of Trinidad, in theGulf of Arabia, and in the North Sea. This trend is set to grow with particularrelevance to submarine fibre optic cablesand inter-platform power cables - TrelleborgCRP is Proven to Perform.

VIV Suppression

In deepwater riser applications, the use ofsteel catenary risers (SCRs) is increasing. These risers can be subject to the complexphenomenon of Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV).

VIV is caused by the regular shedding ofvortices in the wake behind a pipe insteady current. The flow naturally “locksin” to shed these vortices in the samepattern at the same frequency along asignificant length of pipe. This “lock in” ismeasured by the spanwise coherence andcan cause the pipe to vibrate.

VIV causes accelerated fatigue damageand can give rise to problems such as pipegirth weld failure or premature pipe failure.Other applications prone to VIV are rigidsteel flowlines unsupported over freespans and major deepwater fielddevelopments requiring a large number ofthermally insulated pipelines etc.

Trelleborg CRP have recognised thisincreasingly common problem and tosuppress the damaging vibration forces toan acceptable level have put together acomprehensive analytical, design andengineering package complete with anumber of highly successful VIVsuppression products.

Trelleborg CRP analyse each potential VIV problem using specially developedComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)software and use the results to assist inthe design and verification of a strake tosuit the application.

For existing lines a VIV suppression systemcan be retrofitted by divers or by RemotelyOperated Vehicles (ROV’s) in deepwater.

When Trelleborg CRP’s suppressionstrakes are applied, the VIV system profilepractically eliminates periodic vortexshedding from risers and flowlines.

Trelleborg CRP VIV suppression systemsare made to order and can accommodateany likely riser/flowline diameter. Thesystem has been supplied to suit apipeline outer diameter of up to 924mm to date.

Trelleborg CRP VIV Suppression Solutionsincorporate the following products:

Uraduct® VIV Suppression Strakes

Trelleborg CRP’s VIV suppression strakescombine the benefits of traditional Uraductcable and flowline protection with aneffective VIV suppression profile. Theproduct is manufactured in marine gradepolyurethane as two single split linemouldings and is easily installable utilisingthe well proven overlapping andinterlocking concept.

ROV Installable Strakes

Designed to established Trelleborg CRPdesign standards for VIV suppressionstrakes, Trelleborg CRP ROV installablestrake covers are high performancecomposite covers with an attachablepolymer strake profile incorporating thefield proven hinge and ratchet lockingmechanism (ROR - Remote OperatedRatchet) which allows the ROV to handle, open and securely close the covers aroundthe pipeline. The covers are designed to beinstalled safely and efficiently in waterdepths to suit the deepest rated ROVs.

Fairings

As part of Trelleborg CRP’s VIVsuppression development programme, apatented fairing system has beenintroduced as the latest in the VIVsuppression product line. The fairingmodule is fixed onto the riser by a systemof hinged clamps which allow the moduleto freely rotate around the riser to alignwith the current flow and shed thedamaging vortices.

Integral Strakes

Trelleborg CRP are able to mould strakeprofiles into any of its products duringmanufacture. This is ideally suited forTrelleborg CRP thermal insulation shells, where a strake can be moulded in toprovide effective VIV suppression.

ROV Installable Strakes

Fairings

Page 11: Cable and Flowline Products Uraduct and Straduct

9

The Trelleborg CRP VIV suppression system functions by introducing three-dimensionality into the flow. This disruptsthe spanwise coherence of vortices thatmight be shed, leaving the wake stable and steady.

To assist in the optimisation of a solutionfor any given project, Trelleborg CRP hasinvested heavily in specialisedComputational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)software to obtain a comprehensiveunderstanding of the required geometryand calculate the best strake profile for a VIV suppression system.

The software is an invaluable tool duringthe fine tuning of a VIV system design. It provides the optimal balance of drag and vortex suppression utilising the given environmental data for each specific project.

Trelleborg CRP will also verify or complywith customers own strake designs toproduce a bespoke system.

The analysis has been supported by wettank and model testing and forms part of a continuous programme of productdevelopment.

Polyspace™ - 350mm clearance at crossings

When laying subsea cables there is often a requirement to maintain a positiveclearance between cables and existingpipelines at crossing points. Methods suchas pre-lay rock dumping, concretemattressing and steel structures areexpensive, time consuming and difficult toplace accurately. These options may alsobe unacceptable to the pipeline owner.

As a solution, Trelleborg CRP hasdeveloped Polyspace™, a product thatgenerates a 350mm clearance betweenthe cable and pipeline. This system isflexible and comprises of interlockinghollow half-shells fastened around thecable by a combination of corrosionresistant metallic banding and sacrificialbanding. The half-shells are manufacturedfrom UV stable, marine grade, high densitypolyethylene which has good impactstrength and abrasion resistance. Eachmoulding is free flooding and can besupplied with a ballast system to provideup to 90kg/m of additional submergedweight to suit the application.

Polyspace™ is installed onto the cable asit is deployed from the cableship at thecrossing location. Internal cable clampsare used to lock the Polyspace™ mouldingsonto the cable at regular intervals.‘Leading’ and ‘trailing’ bending stiffenerscan also be included with the system toprevent the cable exceeding therecommended minimum bend radius at anytime during installation or retrieval.

Polyspace™ provides an innovative, costeffective solution at pipeline crossingswhere clearance is required. As thissystem becomes an integral part of thecable, additional problems associated withinstalling over a pre-laid ‘bridge orseparator’ are negated. This is in additionto the obvious benefits of no pre-layoperations and the associated costs thiswould entail.

11

Polymat™

Polymat™ is a useful, ROV installable matthat provides general protection andstabilisation to cables and pipelines. Themat is sized and weighted to suit clientrequirements and ROV capabilities.

Polymat™ is moulded from TrelleborgCRP’s “marine grade” polyurethanematerial (see page 16). It also incorporatesa barytes infill that provides additionalballast to aid product stability on the seabed.

Although the size of each Polymat™ can betailored to suit client requirements typicaldeep water applications require mats that arecirca 2.3m long x 1.5m wide x 25mm thick.

Polymat™ is moulded with grooves on oneside to allow the mat to flex and closely fitthe profile of the cable or pipeline.

For ease of handling, holes are mouldedalong the edges of each Polymat™ to allowattachment for pickup ropes etc.

Spiraduct+

The Spiraduct+ system is designed toprovide an additional protective layer forimpact and abrasion protection for subseacables, umbilicals and other tubulars.

Spiraduct+ consists of discrete cylindricalsections manufactured in marine graderubber and cut to form a spiral wrap.Installation simply involves opening thehelix and winding it around the cable. Thismakes Spiraduct+ particularly suited toinstallation by diver.

Spiraduct+ is also suited to providingtemporary cable protection; for example, preventing abrasion at the cableshipsheave during a cable repair. It can also beutilised for short runs of cable liable toimpact or abrasion e.g. ROV or ploughcontrol umbilicals.

Spirawrap is suitable for small diametercables up to 100mm OD and where tightbend radii of up to 0.5m can be expected.

Super heavy weight Uraduct®

In addition to the individual polyurethanecompounds mentioned, Trelleborg CRP hasdeveloped a super heavyweight Uraduct®

that combines the excellent abrasionresistant qualities of the high abrasionresistant polyurethane with the added weight of lead.

Lead inserts are encapsulated in eachUraduct® half-shell during the mouldingprocess. This is done in such a way as tomaintain the flexibility of standardUraduct®. The ratio of lead to polyurethanecan be varied to give an average SG of3g/cm3 and above. This product is ideal forstabilising submarine fibre optic cables atcrossings, for shore landings, and fortouch down ballast of umbilicals or flexiblerisers, and in general for areas wherestrong seabed currents are expected. Theadded stability due to the weight and highabrasion characteristics of the polyurethanedelivers a Uraduct® system that can beapplied in the most demanding locations.

Super abrasion resistantpolyurethane

Where the installation requirements call fora very high level of abrasion resistance, dynamic contact with coral or rockyoutcrops for example, very high abrasionresistant polyurethane is available. With asimilar SG to standard grade material of1.15g/cm3, this polyurethane can beutilised, not only to provide excellentimpact protection, but also to extend thelife of the core product in areas wherespecific abrasion problems have beenrecognised.

Buoyant/Thermal grade

For applications where additional buoyancyis required, a buoyant grade ofpolyurethane is available with a SG ofapproximately 0.7g/cm3. Uraduct®

manufactured from this material has beenused to provide impact and abrasionprotection on cable pull-in operations toreduce the pulling forces required byproviding a reduced combined Uraduct® andcable weight per metre. This elastomeralso exhibits thermal insulation propertieswhere hydrocarbon temperatures need tobe maintained on rigid and flexiblepipelines.

Special grades and colours

Generally, standard grade polyurethane issupplied in orange, high density inmustard, super heavyweight in black andbuoyant/thermal grade in yellow. TrelleborgCRP are also constantly researching anddeveloping special polyurethanes to satisfythe evolving requirements of our customers. For specific projects, Uraduct® can bemanufactured using a variety of harder orsofter grades of polyurethane to suit.
