The main focus of our business is on the safety of our customers during their day-to-day work. For over

80 years now, weve been leading the way in the explosion protection sector in achieving this goal.

Development of explosion protected, electrical control devices and control units increased continuously

and successfully as of 1926. Pioneering new developments and innovative products are the results

of this success. R. STAHL specialists have been working actively for many years now in national and inter-

national committees to define new standards and better safety regulations. R. STAHL presented the

EXLUX 6000 explosion protected series of strip lighting units in 1989. The company quickly became a leading

supplier to the world market in the lighting sector. In 1993, three independent fieldbus systems from

the R. STAHL company were used on an offshore drilling platform near the coast of Norway. What was then

the companys largest fieldbus project required customer-specific, innovative solutions and a high quality

engineering share. R. STAHLs remote I/O System IS1 was introduced in the year 2000 making a decisive step

into the new millennium and gearing for the future. Today, it is an important element of the companys

new fieldbus solutions. Then as now, safety standards did not pose a barrier to us but represented a challenge.

We not only comply with all standards, but are generally also involved in helping to create these standards

and set new ones. As a result, R. STAHL numbers among the leading suppliers of explosion protected compo-

nents and systems for measurement, control, instrumentation, power distribution, operator control and

observation, besides lighting, worldwide. This in turn results in our offer of all-in services to the explosion

    protection sector.

Before cable gland products can correctly be selected to

suit the users application, there are a number of variable

factors that need to be determined. Without this infor-

mation it is difficult to make an accurate selection or rec-

ommendation. Some of these factors may include location, installation code of practice, environmental conditions,

industrial or classified hazardous area, type of equipment

and details of the cable to be used.

Here are some general guidelines that may help to identify

the appropriate cable gland product to suit your situation.

    General cable gland selection guidelines

    > determine conditions of use, i.e. industrial,

    hazardous area.> determine environmental conditions

    > determine type of cable, armoured or non-armoured

    > determine type of armour and thickness,

    where applicable

    > determine cable overall diameter

    > determine cable inner bedding diameter,

    where applicable

    > determine enclosure type and configuration

    > determine whether there is any potential for the coupling

of dissimilar metals (e.g. brass and aluminium)

    > determine entry hole type and size

    > determine any access limitations or space restrictions

    > determine any special earthing or EMC requirements

    > determine accessories required, where applicable

If the cable glands are intended for use in flammable

atmospheres (hazardous areas), the following additional

points may help your selection process:

    > what is the protection method of the equipment,

e.g. Exd, Ex e, Ex n> which gas group is the equipment rated for service in

    IIA, IIB or IIC

    > if Ex d, is the cable directly entering the main enclosure

    > if Ex d, is there a source of ignition inside the enclosure

    > if Ex d, is the enclosure volume less than or greater

    than 2000 cm3

    > if Ex n, is the enclosure a restricted breathing (Ex nR)

    enclosure

    application guide

    > if Ex nR, restricted breathing enclosure, does the cable

    directly enter the main enclosure

    > entry hole type, drilled and tapped (threaded) or

    clearance hole

    > entry hole thread form and size

Once the above information has been identified, the person

carrying out selection is more able to make an informed

decision about which product should be used from the

    choices available.

Please note that selection and installation should be

carried out in line with good engineering practice, observing

the requirements of the prevailing code of practice

(e.g. IEC 60079-14), and in accordance with the instructions

provided.IEC 60079-14 requires that the selection and installations

of equipment shall be carried out only by competent

persons whose training has included instruction on the

various types of protection and installation practices,

relevant rules and regulations and on the general principles

of area classification. The competency of the person

shall be relevant to the type of work to be undertaken.

    R. STAHL offers electrical installation material and cable connecting solutions with a variety of approvals

from internationally recognised certification bodies, including ATEX, IECEx and many others. R. STAHL,

the market leader in explosion protected material, offers a range of cable glands for use with armoured and

non-armoured cables, suitable for use in hazardous areas, classified under IEC 60079 -10, in both metallic

and non-metallic configurations. These cable glands have been designed and constructed in accordance with

BS6121 and EN50262, although the former established the more onerous requirement, and are certified

as fully compliant with the very latest EN and IEC standards EN/IEC 60079 series. With this approach, there

are no special seal materials required to suit typical low or high temperature situations, and two or more

alternative seals to suit each cable glands sealing range are not required. Consequently there are no special

order requirements necessary for the majority of project applications around the world. The certified cable

gland sizes on offer range from the regular M20 to the impressive M130. Using the same consistent design

concept this 8163/2 range stands proud amongst the rival offerings available on the market. Quite simply

    R. STAHL gives you every possible combination of options that you could imagine.

    selection

Cables come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and new

designs are regularly being introduce. For example, ones

with optical fibres. The issue of correctly sealing these

cables as they enter hazardous area electrical equipment

is a worldwide problem, and not confined purely to local

conditions. Although there are no IEC construction standards

for the cables intended for use in f lammable atmospheres,

according to IEC 60079-14 if a cable gland with an

elastomeric flameproof seal is to be used, the cable should

    > be substantially compact and circular (i.e. especially

the part of the cable entering the enclosure)

    > have an extruded bedding (without any gaps)> have fillers, if any are used, which are non-hygroscopic.

Effectively, the cable must be assessed to verify its

suitablity to prevent gas penetration and migration along

its length, as well as its ability to prevent explosion

transmission through the cable, before any cable gland with

an elastomeric seal can be selected. Beyond this other

    exceptions still exist.

The IEC installation code of practice IEC 60079-14 is very

clear about the selection of cable glands for use with

    Ex d enclosure types.

Cable Gland Selection according to IEC 60079-14

Regarding the subject of cable glands to maintain integrity

of type of protection flameproof enclosures Ex d

using direct cable entry into the flameproof enclosures,

special selection criterions have to be considered

as defined in Section 10 of IEC Standard IEC 60079-14

Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres

Part 14: Electrical installations in hazardous areas (other

    than mines).

In order to achieve compliance with the prevailing Code ofPractice, and in particular IEC 60079-14, it is necessary

to evaluate the function of the equipment, the cable gland,

and the cable. Furthermore, in order to satisfy the conditions

of the applicable standards compatibility of all three with

each other must also be verified. Section 10 of IEC 60079-14

Additional requirements for type of protection Ex d

Flameproof enclosures regarding the selection of cable

glands must be followed. Specific rules to ensure integrity

and safe operation of the installed equipment are also

    set out here.

    1

If the cable gland is not certified as part of the equipment

but tested and certified as a separate component, and

the used cable is substantially compact and circular the

    selection chart can be used

    > if the cable is not round in appearance, or visually appears

to allow air to pass through its interstices because

the cable construction is not adequately filled, then a com-

pound barrier type cable gland could be selected.

    > in the case of flameproof enclosures Ex d, the function

of the elastomeric sealing ring, which is applied to thesection of the cable entering the equipment is to provide

a gas tight seal around the cable bedding and prevent

explosion from penetrating the cable sealing point so that

the explosion cannot be transmitted to the external

    atmosphere.

    > if the cable is not round, it is not possible to rely upon an

elastomeric seal to perform a sealing function around the

cable sheath. An example of a cable that fits this scenario

is a twisted pair instrument cable where the insulated

conductors beneath the inner cable bedding do not

usually offer a round (circular) surface on which to seal.

If the inner bedding follows the same shape, then an

elastomeric seal may struggle to seal effectively around

the cable circumference. The effect is often more notice-

able with single pair cables, and it may be necessary to fit

a compound sealing barrier type cable gland to overcome

the situation, depending upon the form of protection

and cable entry configuration of the apparatus enclosure.

    > equally, if the cable is not adequately filled, and allowsthe passage of air or gas along the cable length, then

there would be no protection to the inner part of the cable

when an elastomeric sealing ring is used. In this case

a compound barrier type cable gland is the only safe solu-

tion, and is necessary in order to maintain the integrity

of the equipment and prevent gas migration between

equipment or between hazardous areas and safe areas.

The 8163/2 series hazardous area metallic cable glands are available for non-armoured, and all types

of armoured and braided cables. They fulfil all of the requirements of the European ATEX-directives and fully

comply with the latest IEC standards. 8163/2 series cable glands are available in single seal

and double seal orientations, and the double seal cable glands incorporate a displacement seal on the cable

inner bedding. Their modular design and wide cable acceptance range allows a broad variety of cables

to be terminated in a single cable gland without the need for alternative seals or clamping arrangements to

be ordered. In addition to normal sealing of the cable sheath, secure clamping of the single wire

armouring is essential as this armouring is used, not only for mechanical protection, but also contributes

to the electrical protection. In the event of an earth fault, the armouring acts as an earthing conductor,

and the earth continuity system is maintained via the cable gland. According to IEC 60079-0:2004, when

intended for use with braided type cables, the cable gland outer seal must also provide cable retention under

tensile load conditions without the braid being clamped. R. STAHLs 8163/2 series cable glands

are certified in accordance with this requirement. These cable glands are intended for use with Ex equipment

and are provided with triple certification Exd, Ex e and Ex nR, making them suitable for use with

flameproof (type d), increased safety (type e) and restricted breathing/non-sparking (type nR /nA) enclosures.

    accessories

A range of accessories and thread conversion adaptors and reducers are offered to compliment the 8163/2

series cable glands. These include locknuts, serrated washers, sealing washers, earth tags and shrouds.

Locknuts are recommended to secure cable glands, unions, adaptors, reducers, and stopper plugs to a gland

plate or into equipment. Serrated washers fitted internally to the equipment and before a locknut act as

an anti-vibration device to prevent the cable gland or other cable entry device and locknut arrangement from

inadvertently loosening in service. Entry thread sealing washers fitted at the equipment interface are fitted

to maintain the ingress protection level of the equipment. For explosion protected equipment it is essential to

maintain the integrity of the degree of ingress protection at which the equipment has been rated. Slip on

earth tags installed between the cable gland and equipment, provide an earth bond connection as specified in

BS6121:Part 5:1993 and also comply with category B rating as specified in BS EN 50262. A range of push on

shrouds, which are used to minimise the risk of dirt or foreign substances gathering on the cable gland body,

and/or point of cable to gland interface are also available. Standard shrouds are produced in black PVC.

Thread conversion adaptors and reducers are available that convert the cable gland to a different thread type,

or enlarge or reduce the threaded connection between the equipment entry hole and the cable entry device.
