GREETINGS

It is with tremendous pleasure and enthu-siasm that I once again have the opportu-nity to serve on the Chamber’s leadership

committee. I’ve been fortunate to have been involved with this organization for a number of years, most recently serving as a board member from 2005-2011 and the executive vice-chair-man from 2009-2011. Term limitation forced me to leave the board for a year but I am back with more vigor than ever and look forward to an exciting 2013. It will be an exciting year as the Chamber will be celebrating its 10th anni-versary and there is much to be accomplished.

Among the top items of my agenda is the con-tinued help of Iraqi Christian refugees, who con-tinue to need a variety of services. The Chamber’s charitable arm, The Chaldean Community Foun-dation continues to see 45-50 clients per day at its Sterling Heights office. We’ve doubled the staff, expanded our services and are scouting locations for a larger office space. We also want to assist refugees abroad by supporting the creation of the Nineveh Province as an internationally recognized administrative region where they can rebuild their lives.

Helping our members remains a priority. In 2013, the Chamber will take a more active role in assisting its members resolve disputes. As a practicing litigation attorney for the last 20+ years, I am all too familiar with the shortcomings of our judicial system. As an entrepreneurial community, we bear more than our fair share of the inefficiencies endemic to that system. These services will be in higher demand as business transactions become more complex and the Metro Detroit Chaldean Com-munity swells to exceed 120,000. Chamber members will be able to draw upon their numbers, strength, business savvy and economic power to create an alternative dispute system that will add a level of efficiency to their businesses.

As you can see, the Chamber’s 10th anniversary will be a year of action and con-tinued growth. Our goal is to exceed 1,000 members for the first time in more than five years. More members means more economic opportunities for all and the voice of 900+ is significantly louder than a singular one.

Membership continues to be the backbone of our organization. With that in mind, please use this directory as you seek vendors for new products and services. Doing business with one another is crucial for all of us to receive maximum value for our memberships.

We are constantly updating our programming and will be reaching out to you to ensure your engagement within the Chamber. New Year 2013 marks the Chamber’s 10th anniversary. While this milestone is a significant accomplishment on its

own, there is special cause for celebration as the Chamber’s inception was met with scrutiny and skepticism. “A Chaldean chamber is not needed and will certainly not work” and “you will never unite the Chaldean business community,” were common opinions hurled our way by many. Ten years and 900+ members later, critics became believers and it’s clear that forming the Cham-ber was the right thing to do. This is evidenced by all the good the Chamber and its charitable arm–The Chaldean Community Foundation (CCF)–have done.

In 2012, the CCF helped more than 9,000 Chaldean refugees and other less fortunate im-migrants with a variety of free services, includ-ing immigration, mental health, medical care, job placement and English as a second language (ESL). The demand for services is so vast, the CCF has outgrown its Sterling Heights office for the second time in two years. In 2013, we will continue and expand these services while also seeking solu-tions for long-term housing for refugees.

The kindness of our Chamber members was showcased when they answered a call to provide a Christmas miracle for 10 refugee families, who needed a variety of necessities many of us take for granted. The response was overwhelming, enabling us to assist an additional three families!

Our affiliate the Chaldean Assyrian Syriac Council of America (CASCA) continues to lead the effort to promote the establishment of the Nineveh Province in Northern Iraq as a safe destination for displaced minority refugees who wish to return to their home country. CASCA has attended several meetings with members of the U.S Congress and State Department in Washington D.C. and continues to follow up.

Looking ahead to 2013, the Chamber plans to increase the amount of marketing and member benefits. Additionally, it will plan a trip to the Middle East to seek business opportunities for its members and advocate on behalf of minorities. All activities will be enhanced so we can all prop-erly celebrate 10 years of being one of the foremost ethnic chambers in the country.

JANUARYBank of Michigan was standing room only as it hosted the Jan. 26 Quarterly Networking Meeting, which drew approximately 150 members. The event was catered by Chamber member Plum Market.

FEBRUARYThe Chamber launched the monthly open house and new member orientation.

MARCHThe Ninth Annual Awards Dinner was once again a sellout with more than 900 people gathering at Shenandoah Country Club. Joe Sesi of Sesi Lincoln Mazda Volvo was honored as the Business Person of the Year. Chaldean American Association for Health Professionals (CAAHP) - Project Bismutha was selected as the Humanitarian of the Year and the Eastern Catholic Re-Evangelization Center (ECRC) was given a Special Tribute. 2012 Miss Michigan Kristen Danyal made an appearance much to the delight of radio personality and honorary Chaldean Mojo from Channel 95.5 FM’s Mojo in the Morning Show, who was once again the event’s emcee. Richard DeVore, Regional President of Detroit & Southeast Michigan for PNC Bank was the guest of honor at a Meet the CEO dinner on March 28.

APRILThe Chamber’s President Martin Manna was honored as the Busi-nessperson of the Year by the Greater West Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce at their annual awards dinner at Planterra on April 24.

MAYHurricane Grill & Wings’ tropical theme was the backdrop of the Quarterly Networking Meeting that took place on May 10. Ap-proximate 80 members gathered within Hurricane’s bar area and patio. The Third Annual Chaldean Day in Lansing was celebrated at the State Capital on May 17. The Chamber sent a busload of community delegates to watch the presentation of resolutions by both the Michigan House and Senate. The Chamber also provided a succulent Middle Eastern lunch for the legislators and their staffers.

JUNE The Seventh Annual Chaldean Festival on June 8-10 held once again at the Southfield Civic Center smashed attendance records. While a tad on the warm side, the weather was delightful with plenty of sunshine and hardly any clouds in the sky. The Ninth Annual Golf Outing on June 21 also set a record in terms of revenue raised for the Chaldean Community Foundation. It took place at its usual Shenandoah Coun-try Club and golfers got in nearly 15 holes before the rain forced them to enjoy the dinner, auction and award ceremonies a little early.

JULYBoard Member Saad Abbo of U.S. Ice hosted a fundraiser for Michigan Governor Rick Snyder at his home on July 24.

AUGUST1-800-LAW-FIRM’s sparkling new offices was the scene of the Quarterly Networking Event on August 8th. Approximately 100 guests marveled at the firm’s open modern design and indoor walking track.

SEPTEMBERUnited States Navy Rear Admiral Sinclair Harris was the guest of honor at a Meet the CEO dinner at Shenandoah Country Club on Sept. 4. He met with delegates from the Chaldean community to learn more about Iraqi Christians and talk about some of the important work the United States military is doing on their behalf. Chamber President Martin Manna and other Chaldean delegates at-tended the “Arab Awakening and Peace in the Middle East: Muslim and Christian Perspectives” conference that took place Sept. 8-9 in

Istanbul. It was designed to improve religious understanding and tolerance between Christians and Muslims and was attended by influential world and religious leaders and world renowned advo-cates for Christians in the Middle East. While there and since they were so close to the ancestral homeland of Chaldeans, they visited Nineveh and the villages of Alqosh, Baqofa and Telkaif before returning home on Sept 11. Chamber members Don Tanner and Justin Fisette of Tanner Friedman Strategic Communications gave about 80 members a presentation designed to enhance consumer engagement on social networking websites at the Industry Outlook on Sept. 13 hosted by Chamber member Regency Manor in South-field. Also at the Industry Outlook, Chamber members Andrew and Angelo Binno of B Animate unveiled the Chamber’s mobile app.

OCTOBERMadonna University President Sister Rose Marie Kujawa was the guest of honor at a Meet the CEO dinner at Shenandoah Country Club on Oct. 16. She was given an overview of the Catholic spiritu-ality of Chaldeans. She also provided a summary of the university’s worldwide educational and missionary programs. More than 200 Chambers members personally witnessed a rare site at the 7th An-nual Business Luncheon on Oct. 19 when a few of Detroit’s most prominent thought leaders in the media agreed on the six ballot proposals. Stephen Henderson of the Detroit Free Press and Nolan Finley of The Detroit News, known to have contrasting opinions, joined Jennette Smith of Crain’s Detroit Businesses in a “Let it Rip” themed panel discussion about Southeast Michigan’s revitalization that was moderated by Fox 2’s Charlie Langton. Panel participants

gave their brutally honest opinions about what Michigan needs to do to escape years of economic uncertainty and how Chaldeans can improve their public image in Detroit’s business landscape.

NOVEMBERIn early November, election season was at its peak when Presi-dent Obama was re-elected and Board Member Klint Kesto made history by becoming the first Chaldean to be elected to Michigan’s legislature. On Nov. 14, the Chamber concluded its 9th annual election as 14 candidates ran for seven open board seats. Matt Loussia, Steven Tapper and Tiffany George were newly elected to the Board and Paul Asker, and Stephen Yatooma rejoined the Board after time away and Dr. Iyad Alosachie and Saad Haj-jar were re-elected. Special thanks to outgoing Board Members Rick Farida, Michael Romaya and Jay Yasso. Two former board members, Salim Gasso and Eric Younan, resigned to take full-time positions with the Chaldean Community Foundation.

DECEMBERRegency Manor glistened with joy and holiday cheer on Dec. 6 as it hosted the Annual Member Christmas Party for the third straight year. Among the 200 guests included a Crain’s Detroit Business photographer as the Christmas Party was part of a Crain’s feature about corporate holiday parties, which published in the Dec. 10 edition. The CCF’s Breaking Barriers program that provides services and advocacy for the disables held its first event with a Christmas and New Year’s party at St. Thomas Chaldean Church on Dec. 29.



CHALDEAN COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONThe chamber is proud of its charitable arm, the Chaldean Community Foundation, which continues to grow every year. Here are some of our major programs.

RAST4171 15 Mile RoadSterling Heights, MI 48310(586) 722-7253The Refugee Acculturation Sustainability and Training (RAST) program, funded by a grant from the State of Michigan Department of Community Health, runs on the principle of “teaching a man to fish.” While newly arrived refugees are in great need of government ser-vices, this assistance only lasts for a limited time. It is essential for these newcomers to learn how to fend for themselves in order to lead a successful life in America.

The need for this program is obvious. The RAST office opened in Sterling Heights in February 2011 and due to the seemingly nev-er-ending demand, quickly outgrew its space. In early 2012 RAST doubled its facility in the same shopping plaza, located in the heart of the refugee population in Sterling Heights.

The goal is to help refugees of the Iraq war and the religious persecution that fol-lowed to assimilate to their new country. RAST helps the newcomers become less dependent on federal and state subsidies and services.

In 2012, RAST helped an astounding 9,500 refugees with everything from obtain-ing a Green Card to finding a job to learning English.

Mental Health ProgramImagine fleeing the only home you’ve ever known with just the clothes on your back, forced to leave your homeland and start over in a new country. That is the sad fate of hun-dreds of thousands of Iraqi Christians who have faced heartbreaking religious persecu-tion at the hands of Islamic fundamentalists.

The Chaldean Community Foundation has partnered with St. John’s Eastwood Clin-ics since 2008 to deliver the best treatment available to refugees. Many languished for years in countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, unable to work or send their children

to school, before getting permission to come to the United States. Once here, they face a bewildering new culture and, more often than not, serious financial difficulties.

The Mental Health Program offers a lifeline to these traumatized individuals. One-on-one counseling with translation from Chaldean and/or Arabic is provided at no charge. The service includes transporta-tion for those who lack their own vehicle. In 2012, more than 680 patients were seen in the Mental Health Program. We also added a staff member to work full-time at St. John’s Eastwood Clinic facilitating operations there.

Waad Murad Advocacy FundSince the late 1960s, more than 100 Chal-deans have been killed at their place of busi-ness, mostly during robberies. The Chaldean Chamber has established the Waad Murad Advocacy Fund to supply reward money with Crime Stoppers to facilitate solving these crimes. The goal is to put the perpetrators of violent crime behind bars, and to give the family a sense of closure and justice.

DETROIT INDEPENDENT GROCERS Combating the myth that Detroit is a “food desert” is an ongoing challenge for the members of Detroit Independent Grocers. The group was formed in 2008 to provide shoppers the best possible experience and to publicize the fact that independent grocers are the lifeblood of Detroit’s grocery industry.

Nearly all of Detroit’s 80 supermarkets are owned by Chaldeans who offer clean, safe stores. But unscientific, politically motivated studies persist in maintaining that Detroit lacks full-service grocery stores and, as a result, residents are forced to buy their food at liquor stores and corner markets. The fact that Detroit lacks chain stores – many of which fled the city after the uprising in the 1960s – is noted as “proof” that fine sources of fresh food do not exist.

The brand-new Detroit Independent Grocers website – MyDetroitGrocers.com – shows the facts, with details and photographs of every full-service market in the city. The number of non-Chaldean employees at each

store is included, illustrating that the inde-pendents are also job providers.

THE CHALDEAN CHAMBER PAC The Chaldean community is speaking with a stronger voice in Lansing thanks in large part to the creation of the Chaldean Chamber Political Action Committee. The PAC has become a powerful political tool in enhanc-ing the community’s influence.

CHALDEAN ASSYRIAN SYRIAC COUNCIL OF AMERICA (CASCA)Now that U.S. troops have pulled out of Iraq, the fate of the country’s Christians is still tenuous. But some progress was made in 2012 for the establishment of the Nineveh Plain as a province for Christians and other minorities.

The chamber is one of four founding organizations supporting the Chaldean As-syrian Syriac Council of America (CASCA), formed in June 2007. CASCA is a civic and social welfare organization dedicated to mat-ters of public policy and political purpose for the common benefit of the society of Chaldean Assyrian Syriac people in Diaspora and those in their indigenous lands in the Middle East.

CASCA works at the federal and state levels to address social and political causes of urgency related to the Chaldean Assyrian Syr-iac peoples. It promotes and manages a uni-fied voice to support and guide our people in Iraq, working in consultation, coordination and concert with other Chaldean Assyrian Syriac social, civic, business and political organizations and leaders throughout the United States.

religious minorities represent a living heritage that dates back more than 6,700 years. When the Iraq war began, the Christian popula-tion totaled about 1 million. Today it is less than 500,000. According to conservative estimates, at least 50 percent of the Christian population has fled.

Outreach work continues from the cham-ber office in Metro Detroit and in Chicago.

CASCA is chaired by Ismat Karmo, who participated in a mission to Iraq in November 2010. CASCA’s involvement helped achieve agreement between Iraq’s 16 Christian politi-cal parties to work together as one to estab-lish a province in the Nineveh Plains. Such unity is crucial to the plan’s success.

CHALDEAN LOAN FUNDThe Chaldean Community Foundation partnered with Bank of Michigan to form the Chaldean Loan Fund. Modeled after the Hebrew Free Loan, the Chaldean Loan Fund is designed to provide low-interest loans to community members for the purpose of purchasing used vehicles. Loan amounts are up to $5,000.
